Fallout C.H.A.T. App Brings New Emoji and GIFs for All Survivors

Are you excited about Fallout 4? If not, well, you should be. It’s gearing up to be a major launch, and if you are hyped like the rest of the world, then you should check out Fallout C.H.A.T., an app released to Google Play by the good folks at Bethesda.

While it seems that the developers describe this as a messaging app, don’t be misled. It is basically an image database, filled with tons of emoji and GIFs that you can share through whichever app you choose. You can type text, add emoji, then convert whatever you make into a sharable image through Hangouts, Gmail, or whatever app you use. For me personally, the text and emoji are not great, but the GIFs are stellar.

For GIFs, you have a savior, TNT exploder, octopus-like humanoid creature, and a ton of other fun moving images to share with friends. All of your friends will be jealous, no doubt.

The app is completely free to download on Google Play.

If You Received a DM on Twitter From Verizon Offering a $50 Gift Card, Don’t Worry, It’s Legit

If you entered into the DROID Seeker game last week, where Verizon was giving away 200 DROID Turbo 2 smartphones, you may have encountered problems. Queues were jacked up, people were skipping other players, and folks were generally not happy with the experience.

To help apologize for any poor experiences, Verizon is direct messaging users on Twitter, offering them a $50 gift card for use on whatever they want. Naturally, as Verizon did not publicly announce they would be doing this, we got many emails asking if these gift cards were in fact legit, and not some type of scam.

The messages on Twitter were coming from the verified @Verizon account, so we reached out to Verizon PR for official word, and received the following message.

It is true and Verizon did offer $50 gift cards to customers who experienced technical difficulties while trying to participate.

Now that we all know the $50 is legit, try not to spend it all in one place.

Buyable Pins and the Pinterest Shop Come to Pinterest App on Android

The Pinterest app on Android is receiving an update this week that introduces Buyable Pins, a feature that arrived on iOS over the summer that allows you to quickly buy the items “you love right in the Pinterest app.” The idea here is that when you find products you want on Pinterest, you shouldn’t have to leave the Pinterest app to get them.

With Buyable Pins, you’ll find some 60 million items that can be bought right from the Pinterest app. They show as blue buttons and make it clear whether or not you can buy an item and at what price. The checkout process happens within the app through a couple of taps, all of which is secure. Companies like Nordstrom, Bloomingdale’s, Macy’s and Neiman Marcus are already on board, along with “thousands” more through platforms like Shopify and Demandware.

Along with Buyable Pins, Pinterest is also launching the Pinterest Shop. This new Shop is the “best of Pinterest” and features hand-picked collections from popular brands and small boutiques.

All of this new-ness arrives this week on Android.

Sling TV Adds Chromecast Support

Finally, and I feel that word should be emphasized, finally, Sling TV now supports Chromecast. Sling TV is the TV streaming service that urges folks to “Take Back TV.” When you subscribe, you get access to a basic list of channels in HD available for streaming, and the more you pay per month, the more channels you get.

The service launched with no Chromecast support, but now, thanks to an update, Chromecast dongle owners can stream the service directly to their HDTV without the need of a computer or console device. When Sling TV first launched, it seemed many potential customers were going to hold off until Chromecast support was available, and now, it has come.

To celebrate, owners of a Chromecast can get a free 2-month trial to the service. If you don’t have a subscription or a Chromecast, you can pre-pay for three months of service, and receive a free Chromecast. And you should note, these are 2nd Gen Chromecast devices, not 1st Gen.

The basic plan on Sling TV runs $20 a month, giving access to the top channels like ESPN, AMC, A&E, TNT, HISTORY, TBS, Food Network, HGTV, Travel Channel, and Adult Swim.

Anyone here using Sling TV? How do you like it?

Twitter Ditches Favorites, Replaces With Hearts, Calls Them “Likes”

Twitter announced this morning that it is ditching Favorites, a feature that has been built into the service for years. Favorites allowed users to place a star on a tweet, so they could show tweeters how much they liked the tweet, or to save it for later reading. Now, instead of Favorites, you will Heart tweets, and we will all call them “Likes.” You know, because I wasn’t already liking enough content on social media.

The change is taking place immediately, with rollout happening today across all platforms. This includes changing Favorites to Hearts on the iOS and Android apps, through Tweetdeck, and the Vine Android app. Apparently, Twitter was looking for a more unified system, and since Hearts have become so popular on Periscope, they figured why not bring them to Twitter.

This is Twitter’s explanation for the change.

We are changing our star icon for favorites to a heart and we’ll be calling them likes. We want to make Twitter easier and more rewarding to use, and we know that at times the star could be confusing, especially to newcomers.

If you rock Twitter, expect to see the change today.

Pushbullet Gets Updated for Marshmallow With Direct Share and Runtime Permissions Support

Pushbullet, a multi-platform device-to-device sharing app we use numerous times throughout the day, is receiving an update today that gets it all sorts of cozy with Android 6.0 Marshmallow and its new features. The update introduces support for runtime permissions and Direct Share, so you not only get to specify to Pushbullet which permissions of your device that it can access, you can also now share even quicker.

With runtime permissions, Pushbullet will now ask for your permission to do things like view your SMS messages, contacts, phone, and storage. Pushbullet is actually asking during the setup process, for access to these permissions, so you can allow or deny upfront.

As for the Direct Share addition, this should now make for easier and faster sharing. With Direct Share in Android 6.0, developers are able to specify targets in the share menu, so if you have Pushbullet enabled, rather than just seeing a list of apps to share items through, you should also start seeing shortcuts to specific items in Pushbullet that you might want to share with.

Take for example the image above, which shows a web page being shared. You get the familiar app sharing menu at the bottom, but on top of it there are quick shortcuts for sharing to all of your device in Pushbullet, sharing to Chrome, your PC, and a specific device in the Nexus 7. The Pushbullet team also says that these Direct Share options should get smarter over time, through additional updates.

The update should be live shortly if it isn’t already.

Inbox’s New “Smart Reply” Feature Helps You Respond to Emails Faster

Through an update rolling out to Google’s Inbox later this week, Google is introducing a new feature called Smart Reply. As the name sort of suggests, Google thinks that it has cracked some form of machine learning voodoo, which has enabled it to offer you short, quick responses to emails that could potentially save you a lot of time and typing. Think of how keyboards, like Google’s or Swiftkey, predict the next word you are typing or are about to type. Google now wants to do that on a grander scale, that scale being email.

You can see two examples (in GIF form!) below, where Inbox has essentially scanned the email you are are reading and is then offering you three responses that may fit the conversation. These responses aren’t just canned quick phrases, like you would see in a text messaging app or if you want to auto-respond after hanging up on someone. These seem to be related to the actual email, so that you can either respond and move on or at least get the response started before typing out a longer email. Of course, they should get smarter with time depending on the phrases you do or do not choose.

I would attempt to explain to you how all these machine learning, behind-the-scenes magic works, but I would likely fail. If you want to read more, Google published a research post on pair of recurrent neural networks powering this whole Smart Reply System that can be read right here.

Again, the update is arriving “later this week.” We’ll let you know as soon as it shows up.
