3D MMO Celtic Heroes – Indie app of the day

celtic heroes review

What is Celtic Heroes?

Celtic Heroes is a MMORPG that is free to play on Android. It features a lot of questing, some multiplayer features, and pretty decent graphics. It’s based around Celtic mythology so many of the quests, story lines, and characters revolve around that premise.

The game play is fairly straightforward. You use the left thumb to move the character and the right thumb to move the screen. It’s admittedly a little clumsy feeling at first but you get used to it pretty quickly. Celtic Heroes takes place in a pretty big world that you can explore and play around at your leisure. It’s actually pretty impressive for a mobile game in terms of size and scope.

In terms of multiplayer, you can communicate with others via in game chat or through a built-in set of actions like waving, jumping, or giving someone a thumbs down. You can also add friends, join clans, and travel in groups to go questing together. There is even a trade system where you can trade equipment and items. There was a huge opportunity here for Google Play Games services that we felt Celtic Heroes missed out on but the multiplayer experience was still solid.

During my playthrough, the quests seemed fairly straight forward. You go places to do things or kill things to earn stuff. There wasn’t all that much imagination in the setting up of quests and the story line is pretty bare bones. It’s pretty clear that the big pull of this game is playing with friends and dueling PvP style. The story line or quests aren’t unpleasant but like many MMORPGs, you just get kinda tired of them after a while.

Better than average but not without issues.

PROS

  • The graphics are actually fairly decent.

  • There is a lot of content for a free game.

  • One of the better multiplayer experiences available.

  • If you have a mid to high end device, the game should play pretty smoothly.

CONS

  • If you don't have a mid or high end phone, avoid this game.

  • If you have a bad internet connection or dislike 'always connected' games, avoid this game.

  • Could use a better story.

  • Some bugs have been reported depending on device and internet speeds that may prevent you from downloading or playing the game.

7.0

Overall, this is an above average experience on Android. Of course, your mileage may vary based on what kind of device you own and the speed of your internet connection. It’s free to play so there’s no harm in trying it out. If you’re into MMOs and the game works for you as well as it worked for me then you’ll likely enjoy playing this at least for a little while.

Google Docs and Sheets get big updates with new UI, ability to create Office files, and more

google docs update

Following the announcement that the Quickoffice app will be sunset, Google is pushing substantial update to its Docs and Sheets apps, bringing a new UI design and many new features.

The updates for the two productivity apps bring a slew of new features, starting with a welcome visual refresh that nudges the apps towards Material design. The blue menu bar at the top has been tweaked and is now cleaner, and there’s a new floating button for creating new documents, similar to the create post button in Google Plus. Google also tweaked the aspect of the account selection dropdown and reorganized the options from the left side menu.

In terms of new functionality, the new Docs is able to differentiate between Docs files and Word files (previously, that was only possible in the web version). Users will be able to create and edit Word files (.docx), open files from the device’s storage, and share files as PDF or Word via email. There’s also a revamped editing interface and the new document view that Google introduced on Drive last week is now accessible from Docs.

Similar changes are coming to the Sheets spreadsheet editor – you can create and edit Excel files from the app, there’s a new details page that includes editing history and sharing information, the app differentiates between Excel files and Sheets files, and the spreadsheet editing interface was refreshed. Other new features include the ability to create charts, open files from device storage, and share files in Excel format.

Report: T-Mobile Billed Customers for Bogus Charges

AH John Legere T-mobile TMO uncarrier

According to a report coming out of the Associated Press this afternoon, it appears that the FTC is saying T-Mobile has been charging customers hundreds of millions in bogus charges. Now this is quite surprising, and definitely not something T-Mobile wanted to be caught doing. As their whole mantra has been getting rid of fees and being straight up with their customers. And this is definitely the opposite of that. John Legere has worked hard to turn this carrier around, and has been pretty successful, but if this report is indeed true, this could really hurt Magenta.

We don’t have much information right now from the Associated Press. But if T-Mobile was indeed charging customers -knowingly – bogus charges, then it’s not going to make a bunch of their new customers less happy about switching over the Uncarrier. What will be interesting though is to see how John Legere explains these bogus charges. I’d still like some more information about these so called bogus charges though. Because I’m sure T-Mobile isn’t the only carrier to do this, but they are the only ones to be caught so far.

That’s about all the information we have on this so far, but we’ll be sure to let everyone know once we learn more about this report and what these charges actually are that T-Mobile has been charging to customers. It’s said that it was hundreds of millions in charges, so it’s not some little fee – well it could be, but they do have nearly 50 million customers. How many of you are shocked to hear this about T-Mobile? We do believe it because it is coming from the Associated Press which is not known for posting bogus stories. But we’ll need to keep an eye on this one for everyone. What does everyone think about this report?

MotoMaker Launches in Germany

MotoMaker-Moto-X-AH-1

Last year, Motorola launched MotoMaker. Which was basically their way of being able to allow you to customize your Moto X, and still get it to you within an adequate amount of time. If you order a Moto X here in the US, and get it customized through MotoMaker, you’ll have it within 4 days. Which is pretty good, I’d say. Now Motorola has expanded MotoMaker and it’s now available in Germany as well. Europe got the Moto X earlier this year, about 7-8 months after the US got the device. The Moto X was basically exclusive to North America for 7 months until it expanded to Europe and is now making it’s way to other parts of the world, including India.

What’s interesting here is that Motorola is closing down their MotoMaker plant here in the US by the end of the year, but still expanding MotoMaker in other countries. So what that tells me is that the MotoMaker product will live on, even with Lenovo buying them. I’m guessing they’ll have their own plant in China and will ship it express anywhere in the world so you’ll still get it a decent time frame from when you ordered it.

With MotoMaker you can customize the back of the device, the color of the volume rocker, power button and the ring around the camera. You can even customize your storage, and boot up message. It’s pretty cool and Motorola has told us that there is more coming in the next few months and that this will be part of their company for the foreseeable future with newer products. Which is an interesting approach. It’s basically what PC makers do these days, although it’s usually 3-4 weeks before you get those laptops and desktops at your door.

How many of you in Germany are excited to see MotoMaker launch over there finally? Let us know in the comments down below.

Featured Review: Flexishield Case for the LG G3

flexishield-lg-g3-review-ah-1

Now that the LG G3 is beginning to get release dates and pre-orders are getting underway in the US. We are beginning to see more cases available for the device. Our first case review for the LG G3 is the Flexishield for the LG G3. This is a case that we reviewed for the Nexus 7 2012 back in late 2012 (obviously). And now it’s available for the LG G3. It’s definitely a nice looking case. It is pretty shiny and made of plastic – which is very evident in the pictures in the gallery below. It’s also flexible as stated in the name. Which makes it easy to take on and off of the device, for those that like to use many different cases on their smartphones.

It is basically a TPU case, but it does have cut outs for the Volume Rocker, Camera, power button on the back, as well as the speaker at the bottom of the back panel. We also have cut outs for the microUSB port, 3.5mm headphone jack, microphone holes on top and bottom, as well as the IR blaster at the top of the device. This is the black model, but it’s also available in Blue, Frost White, Purple and Pink. So that if you don’t want a plain black one, there are others to choose from.

There’s not much more to really say about the Flexishield LG G3 case, it’s just a typical TPU case, nothing really special about it. But it will protect your LG G3 and not make it look super ugly, so there’s always that. It does feel pretty durable, but since the LG G3 we have here is a review unit and we need to return it, we didn’t a do a drop test with the case. The Flexishield LG G3 case is available from Mobile Fun in the UK for £5.99, and available on Amazon (pretty much everywhere) for about $6.59.

Google Killing SMS Fallback for Hangouts in “Emerging Markets” Tomorrow

Nexus-5-Hangouts-SMS-AH

Here’s a feature that most of us didn’t know about, I bet. Just to be clear, Google is not killing SMS in Hangouts. If you still use Hangouts for SMS, then you’re fine. But in countries like Guam, India, etc, where mobile networks aren’t as big as they are in the US and other countries, Google had a feature where Hangouts messages were forwarded as SMS messages. Of course that was only when the user didn’t have a data connection. It appears that because Hangouts supports SMS now, that Google doesn’t really need to use this feature in Hangouts anymore. It might be a big deal in these emerging markets like India and Guam, but for most of us, we probably had no idea it even existed. I know I didn’t. This does not affect your SMS messages at all, for those using Hangouts as their messaging app, just a reminder.

For those of you in these countries where this feature was really popular, you may see less Hangouts notifications, it all depends on how good of a connection you have. But it shouldn’t be an issue, actually. So it’s not what we wanted to hear from Google. As we are still awaiting the Google Voice integration into Hangouts, which should happen soon. But there’s changes afoot here with Hangouts. Hopefully we see more soon with Hangouts and Google Voice though.

If you want more information, you can check out the Google OS blog post which is in the sources below. This isn’t a Google blog, but an unofficial one, and they notice quite a bit of changes, so it’s a good idea to add them to your feeds, if you still use RSS readers. How many of you in these emerging markets have used the SMS fallback feature in Hangouts? Is it going to be a big deal that it’s gone now? Let us know in the comments below.

Report: Google to rename Google Play Music All Access to an Even Longer Name

google-music-opo-ah-1

Last year, when Google announced Google Play Music All Access at Google I/O we were so excited, but not that excited about the name since it was super long and unnecessary we thought. Now, Android Police have come across a new Google support page that mentions Google Play Unlimited Music Subscription as the new name of the service. Here’s an excerpt from that Google Support page:

A Google Play unlimited music subscription (previously known as Google Play Music All Access) entitles subscribers to listen to unlimited music from the song titles available within Google Play on a monthly basis.”

We’ve been hearing about an unlimited music service coming from Google and YouTube soon, and it appears that this might be their way of making it easy to clarify between the two services, even though I still thinks redundant. But I’m sure Google has their reasons. I’ve been using Google Play Music All Access since it was announced last year, and I’m sure I’m not the only one around here. It’s a really great service, especially since it’s more than just personalized radio stations, and allows you to discover new artists very easily.

So Google Play unlimited music subscription. It’s still a pretty big mouthful but as long as it doesn’t go up in price or change how we use the service, I guess I’ll be fine with it. But these leaves the question of, will we see other Google Play Music subscription plans? Maybe one that’s just radio, for half the price, or even one that’s just radio with ads for free? I mean Google is an Ad company after all – over 90% of their revenue comes from ads. It’ll be interesting to see what happens here. Since the new name is already appearing on Support pages, we’ll likely see it announced very soon. How many of you like this new name for Google Play Music? Let us know in the comments below.

Has the LTE-A Version of LG’s G3 Been Given Bluetooth Certification?

lg-g3-ah-6

Now that the Galaxy S5 Prime has become a reality in the form of the Galaxy S5 LTE-A version for South Korean customers, words is that LG is getting ready to release their own version of the G3 with a faster CPU in it. Going on how Samsung has handled the launch of the Galaxy S5 LTE-A, there’s very little chance that the faster version of the G3 will be made available outside of South Korea, having said that, the G3 is already a very well-specced machine so we question how big an upgrade the LTE-A version of the device will be.

As GforGames has noticed, an LG device with the model number of “F460S” has been spotted in the Bluetooth SIG database and this device has been spotted before now, with different letters at the end of its model number. These letters are presumably references to different carrier models in South Korea, with the “F460S” perhaps heading for SK Telecom. With a Snapdragon 805 and 3GB of RAM as default, this upgraded version of the G3 will certainly perform a little better, but more than device performance, the 805 is all about faster LTE.

In South Korea, there’s an apparent need for devices like the Galaxy S5 LTE-A that can reach speeds of up to 225mbps and considering the nation’s addiction to subsidies, it’s no surprise that model after model is coming from LG and Samsung as users change their phones in a matter of months. Still, with the LG G3 already packing a Quad HD display, it does seem a little strange to include a Snapdragon 805 and if said device is to launch in the very near future, it begs the question as to why LG couldn’t simply put the Snapdragon 805 in the G3, period. With Spark and XLTE technologies from both Sprint and Verizon, it’s clear that America’s LTE networks are evolving, but we doubt we’ll see the need for an upgrade like this, sadly.

Rumors of a Samsung Galaxy S5 Google Play Edition continue to strengthen

sgs5gpe

We’ve come to expect all the big flagship Android smartphones to have Google Play Edition tag-alongs by now. We thought it a bit odd to see the HTC One M8 get a non-Sense (no pun intended… OK, maybe a little) version of the device without seeing Samsung’s Galaxy S5 join in on the fun.

We were tipped off to the existence of a possible Google Play Edition version of the phone when a Samsung Galaxy S5 with stock Android was used as the main image for the Samsung Galaxy S4 listing. We thought that was odd, but at the time it could have been nothing but a silly error by an inexperienced intern or something.

Samsung Galaxy S5 Google Play edition Play Store

But @evleaks has it on good word that the Google Play Edition Galaxy S5 is still happening, and that we will predictably seeing it at some point this year. There was nothing much else to go on, but this rumor creeping back up could indicate that we’re inching closer to a launch.

devices

Adding fuel to that fire is a graphic of Android phones that recently popped up on Google’s Android site. You’ll see it sitting right in the middle of a sea of other Google Play products, including the Nexus 5, Nexus 7 and the HTC One M8 Google Play Edition.

Not lost on us is the fact that all these images in all these leaks show software navigation buttons when the Samsung Galaxy S5 already has a set of its own hardware to perform those functions. It’s likely just placeholder imagery while the marketing minds at Google find time to slap a proper image on these renders. We’re likely to see those buttons removed by the time the phone actually lands so don’t think much of it. Let’s hope an official announcement isn’t far out.

SuperSU 2.01 update gets support for Android L Developer Preview

supersu_app_icon

Chainfire’s SuperSU app has been updated today to build in support for the Android L developer preview. Before now, rooting the developer preview involved a few workarounds with custom boot images so root permissions should work properly, but that should all be fixed up now.

If you’ve been using the L developer preview, have you tried rooting it yet, or are you fine with using a non-rooted device?

Deal: buy two recertified Galaxy Gears for the price of one Gear Live

samsung galaxy gear aa 11

So you decided to take the plunge and buy a smartwatch. But what’s the best option out there? Sure, Android Wear devices are nice, but that doesn’t mean Samsung’s Tizen Gear line should be ignored, especially if you’re looking for a cheaper ticket to the smartwatch club.

It doesn’t get much cheaper than this deal from Daily Steals that lets you buy a recertified (refurbished) Galaxy Gear for just $99, which is $200 off its list price. This is the original Galaxy Gear, that Samsung launched alongside the Note 3 in September 2013. The watch’s specs and design are pretty similar to the $200 Gear Live, but the Galaxy Gear also features a 1.9MP camera fitted in its strap.

The Galaxy Gear initially launched with Android on board, but Samsung later pushed an update that replaced Android with its homegrown Tizen OS. The Galaxy Gear comes with more features compared to the AW Gear Live – for instance, you can take photos and record videos, use the watch to make voice calls, load it up with music for tether-free playback, or use the Find My Phone feature to locate your missing device.

The Galaxy Gear is available on Daily Steals in Green, Rose Gold, Beige, Black, Gray, and Orange, with a 90 days warranty. You will need a compatible Samsung device in order to use it, with current support phones including the Galaxy S3, S4, and S5, Galaxy Note 2 and Note 3, and Galaxy S4 mini and S5 mini.

Vine introduces ‘loops’ for tracking video views, update now available for Android and iOS

Vine loops update

Despite reports of a mass exodus of users leaving Vine in favor of rival services offered by Instagram or Snapchat, the video streaming social network has proven it has some staying power. Just about every few months we see a new update to the Android and iOS apps, usually ushering some new feature to keep it on the cutting edge of social. Their latest, geared more towards content creators than viewers, introduces “loop counts” for videos posted on Vine.

Similar to views on YouTube, Vine creators can now see exactly how many times their video has been “looped” in real-time. For those unaware, Vine videos feature a continuous loop similar to a GIF, with loop counts now telling you how popular a video is based simply on the amount of times someone sat there watching it over and over again.

Although not mentioned in Vine’s blog post, this could also be a way for Vine creators to finally gain the clout they need for potential advertising revenue. Without any incentive for Viners to continue creating content for the service, we can’t help but wonder how long it’ll be before ads similar to YouTube begin appearing for popular videos.

Also update is Vine’s activity view, showing updates that make a little more sense than they did previously. The new Vine update is available now for both Android and iOS versions of the app. Download link provided below.
