Google is Retiring Picasa, Time to Switch to Google Photos

If you are still using Google’s Picasa photo service, it’s almost (finally) time to say goodbye. I know, breaking up with this dinosaur of a photo service will be tough, just like it was when your wife recently pried your fingers off of that Windows Vista machine, sold your Tango and Cash VHS for $0.50 in last weekend’s garage sale, and bought you new t-shirts that had sleeves on them. I promise, though, it’ll be OK.

Google announced today that they will be retiring Picasa over the “coming months” as they continue to focus their efforts on Google Photos. With that said, Google knows that a “great deal of care has gone into managing your photos and videos using Picasa,” and so they plan to do this retirement “right,” by taking their time and giving you options for accessing your content.

Going forward, Google is hoping that you will move over to Google Photos, which is actually a pretty awesome photo service. In fact, all of your Picasa photos are already in Google Photos, just waiting for you to enjoy them there. However, if you aren’t quite ready to make that move, Google says that they will be “creating a new place for you to access your Picasa Web Albums data.” At this new location, you will be able to view, download, and delete albums, but you won’t be able to create new ones or edit them.

If you are a Picasa desktop application user, understand that Google will no longer be supporting it. They aren’t killing it off, in case you want to continue using it, but know that it won’t receive future updates.

See, it’s time to switch over. You can download Google Photos here.

DROID Turbo 2 Receiving Update to Android 6.0 Marshmallow

Verizon began pushing an update to Android 6.0 Marshmallow today to the DROID Turbo 2. After first showing up in a soak test and then to employee units in December, we’re sort of surprised it took this long to go public to customers. But hey, it’s here!

To recap, the upgrade to Marshmallow includes access to Now on Tap, Doze mode, app standby, better app permissions controls, external storage being used as internal storage, simpler do not disturb settings, better volume controls, and Direct Share to contacts. Motorola and Verizon also killed Ambient Display, since Motorola would rather you use their far superior option, Moto Display. They built in new functions to Moto Assist as well, plus they integrated Attentive Display into Moto Actions.

You can read all about the update at the source link below, but in the end we are looking at build 24.14.9.

To try and pull the update, head into Settings>System updates.

T-Mobile One M9 Marshmallow OTA Rolling Out February 16

According to HTC’s Mo Versi, One M9 owners on T-Mobile will receive an OTA update for Marshmallow beginning February 16. After receiving technical approval, Android 6.0 will bring many features to the One M9 on T-Mobile, including the standard Doze, comprehensive app permissions, and Now on Tap features.

Back in December, owners of the unlocked One M9 received Marshmallow, and while the One M9 is receiving decent software support, owners of the One M8 on various carriers are flocking to Twitter, hoping to get an answer to their questions of when they might see Marshmallow.

As HTC continues to announce updates for devices, we will keep you informed.

As for One M9 owners on T-Mo, be on the lookout.

ASICS Will Acquire Runkeeper

Runkeeper, the popular running app on Android and iOS that I seem to use over all others, will no longer be an independent service. ASICS, maker of legitimate running shoes that aren’t always the best looking (Yes, I’m a sneaker snob.), is acquiring them. Runkeeper announced the news via blog post this morning, noting how “big” the news is and that they are “proud and excited.” Good job, Runkeeper team.

By partnering with ASICS, Runkeeper will “carry on” as a product and the company hopes that they can “move even faster” going forward. In other words, they will have the resources of ASICS helping them continue to build one of the best running apps on the market.

In the end, this really is probably a good thing for Runkeeper users, because it likely means that the app will surely live on and only get better. The apps will get new features, hopefully faster, have a stable team in place to update them, and this could also mean a potential expansion into hardware or other connected products (Smart shoes, anyone?). And look, ASICS is respected running company that needs to attach itself to the tech side of running now that everyone else seems to have. What better company to do that with than Runkeeper?

And that’s that.

AT&T Reveals 5G Roadmap, Details What Customers Can Expect From Such Speed

In the grand scheme of things, 4G LTE is still relatively young, but in the world of consumer electronics, which moves very quickly, it is time we start looking towards the future. AT&T announced a basic roadmap for 5G deployment this morning, detailing that AT&T Labs has been working on the technology for years, filing many patents associated with it. According to AT&T, when all is said and done, field testing for 5G will likely begin in Austin, TX before the end of 2016.

Before field testing can begin, AT&T will start collaborating with Intel and Ericsson on 5G solutions in Q2 of this year. Following that, outdoor tests and trials will commence this summer. The trials to take place will guide AT&T’s standards contributions, then, “set the stage for widespread commercial and mobile availability once technology standards for 5G are established.”

Using the power of imagination, go back to a time when 4G LTE was first launched. Once the flip was switched on, we were downloading apps, music, and TV shows exceptionally fast. It was a joyous time. With 5G technology, we will experience that sense of joy all over again. According to AT&T, the company expects to deliver speeds 10 to 100 times faster than today’s average 4G LTE speed. Instead of speeds being measured in megabits, we will measure them in gigabits. Claimed by AT&T, at one gigabit a second, a customer could download an entire TV show in less than 3 seconds.

Last year, Verizon announced that it too was entering filed testing for 5G this year. For consumers, who don’t exactly need to care about how this technology is rolled out, all we know is that we want it and we want it now.

It looks like 2017 might be a good year for smartphones, if all goes well.

Video: Android 6.0.1 Android Wear Gestures and Features Tour!

Give Motorola credit – they are pushing out this Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow update to their Moto 360 line faster than anyone else, from what we can tell. As of the end of yesterday, the update seemed to be widely available on all of their watches, including the 1st gen, 2nd gen, and Moto 360 Sport. Because it’s so readily available, we grabbed it for each variant, updated, and took it for a spin on video to show off what’s new. After all, this is quite the big update, with new gestures, Doze, app permission controls, and more.

If you went ahead and updated and are looking for the full of release notes, you can find those here.

In the video below, we walk through most of that, though. We take you through manual time and date setting, handling permissions on a per app basis, how Doze should work, and of course, a look at navigating Android Wear with all of its new gestures.

Take a look!
