Verizon’s Xperia Z3v and Xperia Z2 Tablet Both Get Android 5.1.1 Lollipop

Owners of the Sony Xperia Z3v and Xperia Z2 Tablet should be on the lookout for an update over the coming days. Verizon posted changelogs of updates for each device, stating that they should each be receiving Android 5.1.1 Lollipop.

Honestly, I haven’t kept up with either, but a couple of quick searches on the Google machine suggest that the Xperia Z3v is just now receiving Lollipop with this update and never did see 5.0, 5.0.1, or 5.0.2. Is that correct? If so, woof.

This Android 5.1.1 update for the Xperia Z3v will arrive as software version 23.4.B.0.319.  The update will introduce HD Voice to the phone, the latest in Android security patches, new setup wizard, “lots of new visual themes,” floating action buttons everywhere, new volume controls, an updated Sony UI, enhanced lock screen, and more Verizon app integration.

As for the Z2 Tablet, we are looking at software version 23.4.B.0.319, which has to be a typo because that’s what the Z3v is getting. In fact, the whole changelog for this device seems off, with mentions of Android 5.0.2 and 5.1.1 and the same software as the Z3v. Weird.

Let us know if you see the update?

DisplayMate: Galaxy S7 has the “Best Smartphone Display”

In recent years, Samsung has become the king of smartphone displays, according to display guru, Dr. Raymond Soneira of DisplayMate. If you look back around the time of the Galaxy S4 and Note 3, you could start to see the evolution of AMOLED panels paying off and how they were finally catching up to LCD displays. But starting with the Galaxy S5, Samsung jumped beyond its competitors who use LCD displays and is now really only competing with itself. After the S5 took the crown, we then saw the Note 4, S6, and Note 5 all grab the honors for best ever smartphone display. With the Galaxy S7, Samsung has once again outdone itself.

According to DisplayMate’s recent display shootout, the Galaxy S7 is now the “Best Smartphone Display” of them all. The shootout mentions that from the S6 to the S7, Samsung “significantly” improved most of the display performance metrics that are measured. They somehow managed to increase maximum brightness by 24% and also “significantly” improved contrast and a “contrast rating for high ambient light.”

DisplayMate even says that the S7 “leapfrogs” the Galaxy Note 5, which up until today was the current display champion. The Galaxy S7 matched and even exceeded the Note 5 in some categories, which is a big deal since Samsung was able to do this in a smaller 5.1-inch panel that would require scaled down components to the Note 5’s 5.7-inch display.

In this latest shootout, the Galaxy S7 matched or broke records for Highest Absolute Color Accuracy, Highest Peak Brightness, Highest Contrast Rating in Ambient Light, Highest Screen Resolution, Highest Contrast Ratio, and Smallest Brightness Variation With View Angle. In other words, it’s awesome.

We can’t wait to spend countless hours with the Galaxy S7 (and S7 Edge) to be able to take in all of those beautiful pixels and decide for ourselves just how great the latest Super AMOLED panels from Samsung really are.

Question of the Day: Why Aren’t You Buying the Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 Edge, or LG G5?

We ran a poll recently, asking which new flagship device you planned on picking up. Somewhat surprisingly, out of nearly 7,000 voters, the majority (50%) of folks say they are not buying any of them. This could likely be due to the fact that most people here are happy with the Nexus 6P or whatever phone they have, but besides wanting to keep your current phone, is there a specific reason you don’t want the Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 Edge, or LG G5? Is there not enough innovation or maybe a particular feature you want is absent?

Maybe Google impressed you so much last year that you are cool waiting until late 2016 to see what the next Nexus phone will be like, or you just really can’t stand Samsung’s TouchWiz UI and whatever LG is calling their UI these days?

Regardless of the reason, let us know in the comments below why you won’t be picking up any new device from Samsung or LG.

Galaxy S7 and LG G5 Have SD Card Slots, but Skip Android 6.0’s Adoptable Storage

Within the last two days, we have seen both Samsung and LG unveil some really, really cool smartphones for 2016. Samsung gave us the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge, and LG showed off the G5. Samsung’s phones will be here in a couple of weeks, while LG seems to need some more time to get everything buttoned up. All three phones are about as next-gen as you can get in terms of technology, thanks to their Snapdragon 820 processors, QHD displays, innovative camera experiences, and more. But there is one area that has already turned away potential buyers – handling of expandable storage via microSD slot.

As you know, Samsung ditched the microSD slot last year, but decided to bring it back this year with support for up to 200GB of additional space. LG never ditched the SD slot and has brought it back for the G5 with support up to 2TB (!). While we are all excited to see SD support in both, each company has decided against using a feature that could really enhance the storage experience. We’re talking, of course, about Android 6.0 Marshmallow’s new Adoptable Storage

What is Adoptable Storage, you ask? With Adoptable Storage, Android is allowing the system to “adopt” an inserted microSD card to give you one big block of storage space that is formatted and encrypted to your phone. When adopted, your phone treats the storage (after it runs a benchmark to determine if it is fast enough to keep up) like it would internal storage, which means it can “safely store both apps and private data for all users.”

This is what your storage situation would look like before adopting an SD card and then after.

android 6.0 adoptable storage android 6.0 adoptable storage

Before adopted vs. After adopted

What are the benefits of Adoptable Storage? There are few, but most importantly, by adding an SD card’s capacity to your phone, so that it is adopted and recognized in the same as internal storage, you are giving yourself the opportunity to greatly expand your phone’s internal storage. You can then install more apps than ever. If you don’t adopt an SD card in Android 6.0, you can’t do that. You’ll still be able to keep all of your photos and videos and music collection on your SD card like you have in the past, but the apps are out. If you consider phones like the G5 or Galaxy S7 potentially using up a whole lot of internal storage to house all of their bloatware and bloated skins on top of Android, your space for app installation isn’t exactly large.

The other piece I would point out is that adopting is much more secure than not adopting. With an adopted card, your phone encrypts it so that only that phone can use it. If someone were to steal your SD card and slap it into another phone, they wouldn’t get very far as it won’t mount. With a non-adopted SD card, anyone with an SD card slot can access the contents of your SD card.

What’s the big deal with Samsung and LG not allowing for Adoptable Storage? I just touched on it, but the basic argument is that since all three of the phones are essentially only launching with 32GB of storage in the US, your internal storage is limited to just that without Adoptable Storage being active. LG and Samsung have used up quite a bit of internal storage in the past for their bloatware, pre-loaded apps, and skin, so it’s safe to assume that we will be stuck with a similar situation here. For example, the Galaxy S6 last year used up almost 10GB of space out of the box, before you ever installed a thing. If you owned the 32GB model, you were left with around 23GB of space to use for apps.

Why would LG and Samsung do this? At this time, they are giving off the impression that they are worried about Adoptable Storage being confusing, scary, and maybe not all that user friendly (Or maybe customers just don’t want it.). They are more than likely worried that a customer will use Adoptable Storage, not knowing exactly what they are getting themselves into, and then yanking out an SD card and really screwing things up on their phone. That’s a valid concern, of course. But is it the correct move to just fully disable the option all together? We tend to lean towards it always being best to give people options or the ability to choose for themselves rather than just limiting them.

NOTE: As some of have pointed it, though Samsung hasn’t said anything along these lines, another reason for not including Adoptable Storage could have to do with read/write speeds of SD cards. Internal storage is typically much faster than SD cards and Samsung or LG could be worried about there being a performance hit.

Time for you to make a decision. You have lived without the option for adoptable storage up until Android 6.0 Marshmallow, so this is all pretty new territory for most of us. In the past, all we wanted was an SD card to store things like photos, videos, and music. But now that we can take that a step further, this thought of Samsung and LG denying us is a bit unsettling, especially since you can’t go out and buy say, a 128GB G5 or S7.

Sony’s New Xperia X Phones are Coming to the US

Yesterday, to kick off the opening of the show floor at MWC, Sony announced three new phones for its Xperia line, the Xperia XA, Xperia X, and Xperia X Performance. To be honest, we initially looked the other way as they were being announced, because Sony doesn’t typically care about bringing any of its new phones to the US. After all, flagships like the Xperia Z5 and Z5 Compact only arrived here a few weeks ago, yet were announced months and months ago. But today, Sony is trying to pass along word that they are indeed bringing this new Xperia X line to the US and that they hope to do so in a big way, for once.

So, let’s talk about this new line of phones.

The Xperia X Performance is the higher-end of the three phones. It features a 5-inch 1080p display, Snapdragon 820 processor, 3GB RAM, 32GB storage (with SD slot), and 2700mAh battery. It sports Sony’s latest 23MP Exmor sensor that was built “in close collaboration” with Sony’s Alpha camera engineers and features Predictive Hybrid Autofocus. Finally, it uses curved glass and a metal body, while still looking very much like a Sony phone.

The Xperia X is the mid-tier of this new X series, although it very much is on the same level as the X Performance outside of its use of a Snapdragon 650 instead of the 820. It uses the same camera, same display, curved glass, metal body, and RAM. It does have a slightly smaller 2620mAh battery, though.

The XA is the low-end model of the three and Sony isn’t providing many details on it, outside of its 5-inch display, MediaTek processor, and minimal design. At this time, it’s not even listed on their US site next to the X and X Performance.

Speaking with CNET, Sony’s head of North American marketing say that this year “represents a new chapter” for the company and that they are “committed to coming to the US” with these new Xperia X phones. They aren’t likely to take them to carriers, though, so expect to see them at places like Amazon, sold directly to you as unlocked phones. That also then means that they will probably only work on GSM carriers like AT&T and T-Mobile.

Interested? If so, we’ll be sure to keep you posted on when/if they launch here.

Join the WhatsApp Beta for Android

WhatsApp, the messaging service with 1 billion monthly users, now has a beta program available to Android users. Downloadable via Google Play, joining does not appear to be limited or private, with all a potential tester needing to do is enter from a particular testing group link.

The only changes remarked by WhatsApp beta users so far are bug fixes and improvements, but usually, beta users are first to see exciting new features that may be rolled out to the public after testing. As an example, multiple account support on Instagram was teased to beta users for a few weeks before it was available to everyone. The only downside to Google Play beta builds is the lack of changelogs. From our experience, developers don’t tend to bother posting changelogs or any real info when pushing updates. As a user, that can be frustrating.

While the thought of having features before others is always enticing, do realize that these builds are beta, and may not perform the way you would like. The only way to ensure you have a good experience is to remain on the stable, public release builds. However, if tinkering and sending in bug reports to help WhatsApp sounds like a good time to you, have at it.

To download, click the link below, select “Become a tester,” then reinstall the app on your device from Google Play. Make sure any previous version of WhatsApp is uninstalled from your device to ensure you are running the beta.

Let us know what you think if you give it a whirl.
