After an update to the Android app on Friday brought both Maps integration and keyword search, Google Wallet continues its expansion across the US with ChowNow partnership. ChowNow is an online ordering platform for small businesses that provides convenient to-go orders and marketing for independent mom-n-pop restaurants.

Starting today, all of ChowNow’s clients — which include thousands of restaurants across the US — will now accept Google Wallet at checkout. When buying online from a restaurant with ChowNow, you’ll run into the “Buy with Google” button on their site and with a single tap, you can on your way to bringing some kickin’ kung pow chicken home for dinner. Because really, nobody likes manually punching in their credit card info.

While it’s sure a thousand restaurants around the US may not sound like much, but it’s a small step into making our lives easier and more convenient. At this point, we’ll take whatever we can get.

Android 5.1 OTA Update Now Rolling Out To The LG G Pad 8.3 Google Play Edition

61tr0ivflAL._SL1280_ Before you ask, yes, this article is basically just another excuse for me to use Android Police's favorite device abbreviation, LGGP83GPE. (That's the short-lived Google Play Edition of the LG G Pad 8.3, from way back in 2013.) According to at least one Twitter user and, hey, my own tablet, the LGGP83GPE is getting its Android 5.1 update right about now. If you're running stock software, head to the usual spot (Settings>About tablet>System updates) to check for yours.

Android pioneer Andy Rubin to launch Playground Global

Andy Rubin

Andy Rubin, one of Android’s pioneers, is set to launch his company Playground Global. As a reminder, Rubin left Google and Android about two years ago in order to start up this company. According to Rubin, Playground Global is a firm that will provide support and advice to tech start ups that make devices. While still new and relatively small, the company has already lined up a heavy list of investors such as Google and Hewlett-Packard and raised over $48 million.

The company says it won’t directly invest in the start ups that they work with, but rather take equity stakes within those start up companies. According to Rubin himself:

“Our aim is to free the creators to create. By bringing these partners to the table we can remove many of the roadblocks of bringing a great idea to market.”

It seems like a company like this can really help entrepreneurs with tasks such as distribution, manufacturing, financing, etc.

HTC Marks Start Of Baseball Season With Robinson Cano Batting LG, Samsung And Apple Smartphones In Video

Screenshot 2015-04-06 at 6.17.44 PM

HTC have had a busy start to this year. Throughout the close of last year and right up to the start of MWC, speculation was rife around their latest flagship device, the HTC One M9. Once the device was eventually unveiled, speculation starting around whether HTC were offering enough of an evolution from the previous One offering to justify their latest offering. One way in which HTC Have certainly been pushing the One M9 (and their branding, in general), has come through the media of video. HTC have over the last couple of months been releasing a ton of videos highlighting the One M9, its features, its refinement and quality of build. In fact, HTC has even been pulling in some of the big stars to help promote their videos. Most notably and recently, Robert Downey Jr who has starred in ten videos as well as prooviding the voiceover for others.

Following on from this approach of employing known-names, HTC have today released a new video which promotes both the HTC brand and welcomes in the Baseball season. In doing so, HTC have brought in Robinson Cano of the Seattle Mariners to star in the latest video, which makes sense as Cano was brought onboard by HTC as a brand ambassador back in November of last year.

Interestingly, in the latest video, Cano takes part in what is essentially a destroying of a number of HTC’s competitor’s smartphones. Those which get the batting treatment include the iPhone 6 as well as those from LG and Samsung. Cano repeatedly smashes the devices as they are pitched to him and this is pretty much the extent to the video. Although, it does close with a rather ominous message, which could be argued might be aimed at some of those recent criticisms of the One M9. For instance, part of the message reads “It takes focus and power to compete at the highest level. It takes precision to excel. It’s about playing the game for a bigger cause“. Either way and whatever the motives behind the video, you can see the video in full and its final message by clicking play below.

US Cellular has released Android 5.0.1 Lollipop for the Samsung Galaxy S5

Samsung Galaxy S5 back DSC05780

It hasn’t been too long since we last saw a Lollipop update head out to the Samsung Galaxy S5. After Verizon pushed, pulled, and then last week re-pushed Lollipop out to the Galaxy S5, we’re now seeing another carrier give the S5 some update love.

In what shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone, trailing behind once again is US Cellular. As revealed on their software updates page, US Cellular is now officially ready to push out Android 5.0.1 Lollipop to Galaxy S5 handsets on their network and with it, all the features and enhancements (for better or worse) that were introduced in Lollipop. Here’s what you can expect from software version OG900R4VXU1BOC1:

  • Material Design – The new operating system has a new look and feel that is colorful and fresh. Your experience will include more fluid animations along with improved applications and personalization options like themes, colors and widgets.

  • Your device, your rules – For fewer worries and disruptions, adjust your settings so only certain people and notifications get through. When it’s important, respond directly from your lock screen.

  • More ways to secure your device – Share your device securely with guest user mode. Or create multiple user accounts to enable friends to log in on your device. In either case, no one will be able to access any of your stuff. And you can use Android Smart Lock to secure your phone or tablet by pairing it with a trusted device like your wearable or even your car.

  • Pick up where you left off – The songs, photos, apps, and even recent searches from one of your Android devices can be immediately enjoyed across all of your Android devices.

One thing Lollipop for the S5 is missing? The lighter, more streamlined TouchWiz user interface as found on the Galaxy S6. We can’t for the life of us figure out why Samsung wont bring this to their older devices, but if there was ever a time to do their customers a solid, it was during a major software update like Android 5.0. What a shame.

Mailbox Goes Material Design In Version 2.0

Mailbox-Thumb Dropbox's Mailbox email client has always been relatively simple and stylish, but the latest version of the app pushes it further in both directions. For the big 2.0, Mailbox is going material.

The side navigation menu slides out over the action bar, and a floating action button hovers in the bottom right corner. Excess lines have been stripped from various areas of the app, leaving more whitespace and, well, lots of white in general.

Telegraph: Google's MVNO May Be Working On Deals With Foreign Carriers For No-Cost Roaming

image

Google's "Project Nova" MVNO ambitions have already begrudgingly been acknowedlged by Android/Chrome "czar" Sundar Pichai, but now the Telegraph is reporting the company is in talks for no-cost international roaming as a feature of the service.

The Telegraph's info comes from a source claiming that Google is currently negotiating with the owner of Three, a multinational carrier with operations in the UK, Europe, and Hong Kong. The deal would see Google MVNO customers charged no more for data, SMS, or voice services when roaming on Three's network than they would pay for service at home.
