Nabi’s Big Tabs are computer-sized, kid-friendly Android tablets

78395_nabi_Big_Tab_Combined_Side

Nabi has been making portable tablets for kids for a while now, but if you were looking for something larger than about 7″, you’ve been out of luck–until now. The Big Tab HD is a new line of tablets from Fuhu that are both at least 20 inches. There are two models available: the $450 20-inch version with a HD+ display, and a $550 two foot version with a Full HD display. The purpose of these tablets is to educate and entertain children and give the opportunity for interactive learning, all while under the parental control settings native to the Android-based Blue Morpho interface.

In case you’re planning on carting around this monster tablet for fun on the go, think again. The device weighs in at 13 lbs and is almost an inch thick. However, it gets worse. The enormous screen is meant to run off of a 1,650 mAh battery, which will leave you searching frantically for an outlet about as soon as you turn it on.

But it’s not all bad news. The large screen allows for collaborative work amongst family members, 16 GB of storage will be enough to house all the apps from the curated App Zone, and an NVIDIA Tegra 4 chipset to power all of your fun.

Alleged selfie-focused Sony smartphone leaks, looks absolutely bizarre

sony_selfie_phone_front

The year 2014 will be remembered for its selfies. Anywhere you turn, in the real world or online, someone taking a photograph of themselves can be found. We have already seen companies aim to master the art of a single camera for both sides, but not quite like this. The image above is allegedly an unannounced Sony device that is all about selfies. The entire devices resembles a women’s perfume bottle and has a massive lens for the camera that swivels 360 degrees so that it can be used as a front facing or rear camera depending upon the position.

So is it real or is it fake? Well, additional images have surfaced; therefore, Sony could actually be daring to release this device. If it were released, it is probably safe to say a limited quantity would be produced. Also, do not expect it to be widely available throughout various markets. Collectively, though, I think we can all agree Sony would be much better off keeping this device away from the public and focus on giving potential United States customers an emphasis with the Xperia Z3.

Hit the break for an image of this device’s rear.

New Google patent hints at a more traditional Glass design

glass-update-1 There is no denying that Google Glass is very, very cool. But there is also no denying that Google Glass doesn’t look very cool. In fact it looks exactly like a pair of glasses with an external prism and projector attached to it, looking more like something Data from the Goonies would wear, and not a gadget aimed at the average consumer. Luckily Google filed a patent last week that seems to be an attempt at making the Glass less conspicuous and more socially acceptable.

Google describes the patent (D710,928) as a “wearable display device”, and appears to move the projector and prism behind the glass and closer to the eye, resulting in a much more traditional (and svelte) design.

glass-update-4 glass-update-3 glass-update-2 glass-update-1

Whether this design will ever see the light of day remains to be seen, but its safe to assume that the Glass will undergo major revisions over the next year or so if Google wants it to become anything more than a niche product. Regardless, it will be exciting to see what the future holds for Google’s controversial project. Does the updated design make you want a pair? Let us know in the comments below.

Samsung to offer an ultrasonic cover for the Galaxy Note 4

Samsung_Logo_01_TA_CES_2014

With every new phone comes new accessories, and the Galaxy Note 4 won’t be alone. It appears Samsung is working on an ultrasonic cover that could be utilized for those that have vision-related disabilities.

According to SamMobile, the cover will detect nearby objects from its ultrasonic sensor and provide feedback. Users will also be able to choose between three different levels: short, middle, and long.

An insider with a Note 4 prototype sent in the complete description from the accessory, of which you can see after the break.

“The Product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. This Product is a non-medical device.

It cannot replace a cane and should never be used as a mobility aid or substitute for any mobility aid tool. It must always be used in combination with a cane, a dog guide, or a human guide because, by itself, it does not provide information necessary for safe travel.

We strongly recommend you to educate yourself fully and abide by the operating procedures of this manual before your first use. Furthermore, we encourage you to train yourself with how to use the Product and be sure to have fully understood how the Product works correctly. We are not responsible for or liable for any misuse of the Product or incorrect interpretation of the Product manual. While using the Product in training, it is strongly recommended that you work with a sighted friend who can give you visual feedback, particularly when you work with more advanced skills.

The Product does not detect drop-offs. When doing exercises that require hand scanning, make sure that you use an area without steps or drop-offs, and without car or pedestrian traffic.

The Product does not provide the scope and detail of information obtained through vision and the coverage area/range may vary due to circumstances.

Users should always remove headphones from their ears when approaching and crossing intersections or when walking through areas that include business driveways, parking lots, or alleyswhere traffic might cross the path of travel.

For further warnings and disclaimers, please refer to the Product manual.”

We expect to see this cover at the Unpacked event on September 3rd.

Tumblr teams up with Ditto to turn your photos into a marketing data goldmine

Tumblr Starbucks Millenial hipster

Once a place for posting erotic black and white images (or as some would call it, “hipster porn”), Tumblr will soon find itself a haven for multinational corporations looking to find new ways of marketing their goods. Tumblr recently inked a deal with Ditto, a company who specializes in the scanning of photos for brand images — everything from the Nike “swoosh,” to the logos like Coco-Cola, and more — selling that information back to those corporations. The deal will give Ditto “wholesale access” to Tumblr’s vast repository of user generated content (read: photos). All those images of girls sharing their Starbucks drinks? Ditto certainly has plenty to work with.

In a statement to Motherboard , Ditto CEO David Rose said:

“Twitter and Instagram have been suppliers of data to us for over a year and we’re able to look on behalf of brands at what the conversation about them looks like through photos. What’s different about Tumblr is that they’re supplying us with the entire firehose of all photos that we’re then able to interpret.”

Ditto’s unique image identifying algorithm doesn’t just identify brands, but even the expression of faces in photos to indicate the general feelings towards a specific brand. And although Ditto says they don’t identify individual people, they can pinpoint top “influencers” on any given social network, handing off this information to corporations looking to team up with these influencers for promotional campaigns (see the spammy sh*t show Vine has turned into in recent months).

While Ditto and Tumblr’s new agreement isn’t likely to raise any privacy concerns, if the Instagram fiasco of 2013 has taught us anything, it’s that the internet has some major trust issues. Tumblr and Ditto wouldn’t comment on if this was a money-changing-hands kinda deal, or if users would be notified of how Tumblr is planning on using these photos. User data is a lucrative business. We’ve all seen what Google and Facebook has done with it. Now it seems Tumblr — and parent company Yahoo — are looking to cash in on photos and the unspoken data therein.

According To A New Study, Slow Growth Plagues the Fire Phone

Amazon-Fire-Phone-AH-23

According to a new study conducted by Chitika, the all new Amazon Fire Phone is off to a slow start. The study published Tuesday states that the growth of the fire phone is slow and isn’t keeping up with competitors such at the LG G3 and the Samsung Galaxy S5. Before we get into the many factors and numbers of why the phone hasn’t gotten so far, lets go over how Chitika obtained their information. The firm is called Chitika Insights and the way they came about their information was by tracking the activity growth of the Fire Phone through ad impressions.

The firm also used the number of times the ads appeared before a user. Through those techniques, Chitika was able to gauge the popularity of the Fire Phone by the amount of activity from mobile web accessed through the phone. Now for numbers, apparently Chitika based their study off of tens of millions of ad views. Their network range was over 350,000 websites, which is a pretty wide scale. Within the first 20 days of the Fire phones release, the device only accounted for 0.02 percent of traffic. Thats rather small compared to other flagship phones that have hit the market.

The reason for the slow growth of the Fire Phone is due to its exclusive carrier. If you are interested in getting a Fire Phone you have to get service through AT&T, whether you bought the device with our without contract. The data is also no surprise to analysts who have already predicted that the growth would be slow due to the exclusive carrier. According to the study, “The somewhat mild adoption of the Fire Phone may be seen as an expected consequence given the smartphone’s carrier exclusivity.” When the Fire Phone was compared to the growth of other phones, the device fell short. Compared to the LG G3, the G3 reached 0.06 percent within its first 20 days. The same goes for the Samsung Galaxy S4 that reached a whopping 0.19 percent in only 11 days. Both of these phones were released under multiple carriers, so the devices were not chained down to just one provider. Amazon has yet to release actual sales figures for their Fire Phone but when they do, we will make sure we keep you up to date.

Smart Communications Claims To Bring Its Customers A 5G Network

5g smRT

Remember back in 2010 when T-Mobile, AT&T, and Sprint started claiming to have 4G networks and we all started hammering them for it? Just in case you forgot here is a quick recap. T-Mobile started saying that their 3G HSPA+ network was 4G and then Sprint, AT&T and Verizon started acting like spoiled children feeling that if T-Mobile was getting away with lying they could do so as well. They then started marketing their respective networks as 4G networks. This pathetic display proved that carriers would do anything to separate you from your wallet including lying straight to your face. None of these companies came close to reaching 4G speeds. No matter what technology their networks utilized, all the user would be getting were still speeds of up to that of HSPA+. Originally, AT&T was actually a voice of reason.

Yeah, who would’ve thought that was actually possible? They actually stood against what T-Mobile was saying, warning that companies should not mislead their customers by calling HSPA+ something that it isn’t, that being 4G. So why did they all of a sudden change their mind? I can give you two reasons. Here is one of AT&T’s major competitors, T-Mobile, claiming to have a network that is faster than their own and selling it to consumers. Though they and the tech enlightened know this to be false advertisement of goods, the average consumer doesn’t. The second is that AT&T then notices a change in the laws and starts to copy T-Mobile.

As it turns out, the very governing body that was supposed to protect the consumer from misinformation such as this is the one to blame for this mess. The ITU suddenly just changed its stance, just like that. Cough, politics, cough. Originally the ITU said that a network could only be considered 4G when it’s download speeds hit 100Mbps. The only networks that were capable of reaching these speeds were WiMax2 and LTE-A or LTE Release 10 which is now active in countries like Korea. Only phones such as the prime models we hear of so much today can even access LTE-A networks. Remember, these networks and phones were claimed to have existed 4 years ago here in the states. We still have yet to even reach half of these speeds. I’m located in Miami and the image at the bottom shows that I get nothing close to that. Yes, laugh at me, I know it is pathetic but it proves my point. Since the ITU’s decision can change to make carriers happy, it should be of no surprise to us that a 5G network has recently been deployed. Smart communications of the Philippines has deployed what they define as 5G. That’s right Smart communications, no one’s watching anyway, in fact, you might just get a pat on the back. I can only assume that the only reason that they didn’t call their new LTE-A network 6G is because no one claimed 5G as of yet.

The sad part to this is that not only is Smart Communications actually lying to their customers, it has been reported that the Philippines has one of the worst markets when it comes to LTE both in terms of speed and price. Since smart communications is the largest carrier in the country they play a large role in this problem. Smart communications claims to have reached speeds of 209.66 Mbps when testing their new network. If this is even true this was most likely done in some isolated testing area because many customers claim to achieve speeds of only around 3Mbps which falls well into the nations average of 3Mbps. Can anyone even imagine such a drastic improvement? Well, this is what the market has come to since no one is governing these large carriers. Everyone can just make up their own terms for high speed data for mobile. Say whatever you want to so long as you are large enough to throw your weight around. This is going to turn into one nasty mess in the future since there will be no standards whatsoever. Once again, it is the consumer that suffers.

Hands-on: Sharp Aquos Crystal for Sprint [VIDEO]

sharp-aquos-crystal-10

We already learned pretty much everything there was to know about the Sharp Aquos Crystal, when the phone was officially announced for Sprint earlier today. But tonight, or own Kevin Krause is reporting live from a Sprint event where he was able to get up close and personal with the phone everyone is talking about.

sharp-aquos-crystal-12 sharp-aquos-crystal-7 sharp-aquos-crystal-11 sharp-aquos-crystal-4 sharp-aquos-crystal-5 sharp-aquos-crystal-10

Touted as having virtually no bezel (despite its unsightly large chin), the Sharp Aquos Crystal is a departure from the standard cookie-cutter smartphone design we’re all used to. Because the top portion of the phone is solid LCD display, there’s not even room for an earpiece. Instead, the entire display acts as an earpiece, allowing users to place their ear anywhere they like for crystal clear calls. Here’s a quick rundown of the specs before we get to our hands-on:

Sharp Aquos Crystal hardware specs

  • 5-inch edge-to-edge HD display

  • Android 4.4.2 KitKat

  • Sprint Spark LTE

  • 8MP rear-facing and 1.2MP front-facing cameras

  • HD Voice

  • Embedded 2,040mAh battery (3-day battery life)

  • 1.2GHz quad-core processor

  • 1.5GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage

  • Harman’s Clari-Fi audio technology

The Sharp Aquos Crystal will be available later this year in either black or white varieties from Sprint for $240 straight up, or $10 a month with Sprint Easy Pay. Boost Mobile and Virgin Mobile will also get their versions of the phone, with the black model headed to Virgin and white to Boost — both for only $150+tax. Not bad.

Verizon's HTC One Max Finally Getting The Sense 6 OTA

Untitled

If you hopped on the I want a really big HTC phone train, then you probably have a One Max. If that One Max also happens to be on Verizon, it's time to start checking for updates, because Sense 6 is rolling out now. Woo for you.

This update doesn't appear to have much else going for it, as the device is already running Android 4.4.2, but I guess a major revision to the custom skin is nothing to scoff at.

Verizon's HTC One Max Finally Getting The Sense 6 OTA was written by the awesome team at Android Police.

Leaks Suggest That Sony Is Manufacturing A Selphie Phone With A Swivel Camera

Sony-Xperia-Z2-Tablet-AH-6

Just in case selfies are your main forte, and just in case you weren’t already adequately equipped to take the absolute best selfie in the universe, according to these leaks, Sony may have your answer with a possible upcoming device that appears to have a rotating camera. First and foremost, we want to suggest that you take this leak with a pretty decent size grain of salt. While there is no evidence to suggest that this device is coming nor is there any to suggest the opposite(meaning it could be entirely possible that this is real upcoming phone that Sony intends to launch in some markets)we just can’t see something this ridiculous looking being developed for the general public.

Opinions on the design of this device aside, the image leaks come to us from a few different sources, Digi-wo, and an individual users account on Weibo, both sites that are known for leaking photos of upcoming devices that are prominent in the Asian markets, and one other source which is another individual Weibo account named Zakbuks. If this device pans out to be something that is entirely real, Sony wouldn’t be the first smartphone OEM rumored to be coming out with a dedicated mobile selfie machine. The device certainly looks a lot different than what we’re used to seeing from Sony, which immediately makes the phone seem like something that was mocked up.

We’ll let you guys and girls be the judge of whether or not this may be a device that will actually see the light of day. From what we can tell though, if Sony actually manufactures and sells this device, it will come in multiple colors like some of their other devices have in the past. There is also a leak containing some of the device’s camera specs to go along with the images of people using the phone to take selfies, the big feature of this phone. The camera comes with OIS, and will be a Sony Exmor RS sensor with 19.2 million pixels. It also sports WiFi and NFC, and a built-in ND filter. It apparently also comes with a microSD card slot for extra storage, although there was no mention in the leaked specs about actual internal storage, device screen size, processor, battery or anything else we’d hope to know about a new smartphone. All the same, this has got to be one of the most ridiculous looking smartphones we have ever seen, whether it’s real or fake.
