Google is reportedly in talks to buy Softcard at a steep discount
After rumors that Samsung was in talks to buy out BlackBerry, we’re now getting wind of another big acquisition. The folks at TechCrunch seem to have it on good authority that Google is engaging in talks to buy up mobile payments company Softcard for less than $100 million to help bolster their own NFC payment service, Google Wallet.
Softcard — formerly Isis Mobile wallet — was a joint effort by AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile looking to corner the mobile payments market, but more recently, has been in a “consolidation phase,” laying off more than 60 employees as they attempt to strengthen their business by cutting costs and reorganizing their business structure. Apparently morale within the company is at an all time low, with some employees no longer even showing up for work.
While neither Google nor Softcard would comment about an acquisition, it’s worth pointing out that sub $100 million dollar amount being thrown around is significantly less than the hundreds of millions of dollars the big 3 carriers had originally invested into a company once looking to compete with Google Wallet and Apple Pay. Sources say at one point, Softcard’s burn rate was around $15 million a month.
Other companies said to be licking their chops over Softcard is PayPal and Microsoft, with the possibility of even AT&T or Verizon taking the struggling company under their wing. As for Google, they are more or less eying Softcard’s treasure trove of patents, which tips the scales at around 120 in all. Well, applications anyway. We’ll let you know when we hear more.

Android Auto: Is Everywhere at the North American International Auto Show in 2015!
So I have a confession. Living in Detroit, and well Michigan, most of my life. I’ve had a big passion for cars. Especially GM, Ford and Chrysler cars. Every year I go to the North American International Auto Show that’s held here in Detroit and I love it. It’s like going to Disneyland. Now that Android Auto is really starting to make it’s way into cars this year, it has me excited. Because I can go to the Auto Show and get hands on with Android Auto. Which is awesome!
I was able to get an early preview at the Auto Show last night as part of our local ABC affiliate’s Tweetup. I was on the show floor for about an hour and a half. So by no means have I seen everything but what I did see was Android Auto. Yes! There’s a number of car makers that are putting it into their cars this year, including Hyundai, Acura, Chevy, and many others. Hyundai has demos of both CarPlay and Android Auto available. I have an appointment with them on Monday to get a full in depth look at Android Auto. So you’ll want to stay tuned for that. Android Auto is in the Hyundai Sonata, the Audi Q7, as well as the new Chevy Volt, and a slew of Ford cars through Ford Sync 3. So lots of hands on coming next week.
So why is this a big deal? Does anyone remember the Open Handset Alliance a few years ago? Where Google had partnered with all of these smartphone makers to get updates pushed out to these devices faster? Well when Google announced the Open Automotive Alliance last year, I was afraid that’d be the same thing. But we are already seeing Android Auto in just about everything. And this isn’t just seen at the NAIAS in Detroit, but also at CES last week in Las Vegas. Many of these car makers are doing it correctly, from what I can tell. Loading both Apple’s CarPlay and Google’s Android Auto onto the same car. So if you buy a Chevy Volt and have a Nexus 6 at the time. Say you buy the iPhone 7 in 2016, well you can still use it with your car, just switch over to CarPlay. No big deal. That, I think is amazing.
It’s amazing to see all this Android Auto and Apple CarPlay throughout Cobo Hall here in Detroit at the NAIAS. Considering a year ago, we didn’t really know what either of these infotainment platforms were. It’s great to see this taking off, especially on the Google side. Sprint Not Afraid Of Reclassification Under Title II As Long As It Can Manage Its Network
Net Neutrality is not a new thing, although with the number of headlines it has received over the year, you would be forgiven for thinking that it is breaking news. That said, Net Neutrality has become so topical recently, due to the idea of an equal broadband service. For those unfamiliar with the debate, there are two distinct sides. The first believe in freedom. No matter who you are, you should be treated the same, charged the same, receive the same. These are the Net Neutrality supporters. In contrast, the other side believe that those who pay more should get more. Inequality, if you like, and these are (in the current topical climate) considered to be the carriers.
The FCC has long battled with how to control something as ‘open’ as the internet. There are no previous laws to fall back on or use to justify actions, and as such the FCC do not really have a leg to stand on when it comes to forcing carriers to offer an equal broadband experience. Enter Title II. This is the next major player in the broadband Net Neutrality debate, as Title II refers to Title II of the Communications Act, dating all the way back to 1936. The FCC (and the supporters of Net Neutrality) think that if internet service providers (ISPs) can be reclassified as ‘common carriers’ under Title II, then the FCC will be able to enforce Title II legislation, effectively enforcing Net Neutrality and stopping ‘Paid Prioritization’. As you would expect the carriers are against such measures and for obvious reasons.
That is, except Sprint. Stephen Bye (Sprint, CTO) in a letter to the FCC today blatantly stated that Sprint are fine with Title II and that being reclassified as a ‘common carrier’ will not affect how Sprint invests in its network. In fact, Bye went on to describe how the mobile voice sector actually benefitted from being classified under Title II and that competition, not the regulation, it was fuelled and led to the expansion of the market. Bye further went on to state that as long as the FCC employed a ‘light touch’ application of the regulations then it will not affect carriers at all. As long as carriers are able to self-manage their own networks, differentiate their own products and services then reclassification will not make any difference. Huawei Ascend G735 Gets WiFi And Bluetooth Certification At The FCC
Huawei has a new smartphone that has just passed through the FCC for certification, known as the Huawei Ascend G735, listed with the model number Huawei G735-L03. From the image posting along with the FCC documents, we can see the camera on the back is equipped with an LED flash, although there are no details so far on what the quality of the camera is. We can also see the SIM card slot as well as a slot for a microSD card for expandable storage past whatever the internal storage space is, which is also unknown at this point. The good news is that even if it’s lower than you’d hope, you can always insert a microSD and be good to go.
According to the FCC documents it went through testing for WiFi and Bluetooth, and it supports WiFi in both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, and passed the Bluetooth testing with no issue. This will not be a metal frame device like a couple of other recent Huawei phones, but instead will have a plastic frame. Judging by the image it looks like the Ascend G735 will have bottom mounted speakers as you can’t see them anywhere on the back, which is just fine by us if that’s the case as speakers on the back sometimes tend to make the audio a little harder to hear.
Since this has recently passed through testing we can probably assume that we’ll see Huawei launching the Ascend G735 soon. Perhaps they’ll show it off next month at Mobile World Congress or perhaps before. We can also tell from the FCC documents that it was tested for network bands GSM850, WCDMA 850, GSM 1900, WCDMA 1900, and WCDMA 1700, as well as LTE bands 2, 4, and 7 and passed through all tests. So from that, we know that the device has LTE support, which means it’ll be capable of connecting to the network faster while also accessing faster data speeds, which we suppose isn’t too uncommon now that many carriers are already working off of LTE. Keep your eyes peeled as more details pop up on the Ascend G735, like specifications, price, release date, and where you’ll be able to pick it up.

Verizon Wireless Is tracking Your Browsing For The Benefit Of Targeted Ads
Most people probably don’t think about what happens to the data involved in an exchange between their mobile device and the carrier they’re requesting the data access from(in this case, Verizon Wireless-the ISP)but if you’re a subscriber on Verizon Wireless apparently your browsing is being tracked with something called a Unique Identifier Header,(being referred to as super cookies, or zombie cookies as they can reappear and persist through deletion)which Verizon can and apparently does send off to Advertising Exchanges by way of the destination or third party website, which in turn pays for Verizon to send targeted ads back to your smartphone. This sort of scenario perhaps wouldn’t seem so sneaky if the UIDH was removable but according to the source it is not, so opting out of having your browsing tracked and than injected with these unique identifier headers is something that is seemingly just not possible.
The main issue with the UIDH seems to focus on the fact that Verizon is the one injecting these temporary ID’s meaning they’re tracking your browsing through web based HTTP requests when you actually use the browser on your phone, and they can track your browsing through apps too. Presumably you could normally clear your cookies out and reset, but the way the unique identifiers work is that even after you clear out your cookies the advertisers can reconstruct your ID cookie with the header Verizon has provided. Jonathan Mayer who is a computer scientist points out that he was able to find one such company that was using the unique headers provided by Verizon to track customers and serve them up targeted ads, called Turn
Turn uses these unique ID headers to collect your data no matter if you’ve opted out by clearing your cookies or not, because the header itself allows them to re-identify you and link your browsing and cookie history before and after the deletion of cookies. In a time when people’s online privacy is something that seems to matter quite a bit to most, this is something that is a shady practice at best. That’s bad news. The worse news is that there really is no viable option for getting out of this type of data collection unless you either mask your browsing through a virtual private network, or switch carriers, both which might not be an option at all for some users either. Proof Lollipop had an LED notification toggle on the Nexus 6, but Google removed it [VIDEO]
It wasn’t too long after the launch of the Nexus 6 a few crafty users discovered a dormant RGB LED notification light hidden on the phone, located smack dab in the middle of the top speaker. Kind of odd, given the OS didn’t support the notification in any way and the light left more questions than answers.
We thought it might have had something to do with Google opting instead for the ambient display (or them simply rushing Lollipop out the door) but alas, it didn’t take long for users with root abilities to get the dormant light up and running using an app called Light Flow.
If there was any question that Google had every intention of using the notification light but then scrapped it, turns out an old Google Help video uploaded back in November shows just that, a Pulse notification light toggle baked into Lollipop but never made the final cut. Major. Bummer.
We suppose if the code/function was already apart of the OS they could always bring it back in a future Android version, but we wouldn’t hold our breath. It would probably be even more strange for Google to come out and support a hardware function that came disabled in the initial release.

Android Game Of The Week: Gunslugs 2
Orangepixel is back with their sequel to the popular Gunslugs action/platformer title with Gunslugs 2. They were scheduled to launch this game yesterday but it ended up showing up on the Play Store a bit earlier the night before. If you enjoyed the original Gunslugs with all the retro action in this homage to the 16-bit era of video games, then you should definitely check out Gunslugs 2. There’s plenty of humorous banter mixed with loads of explosions and bullets flying everywhere as you run and gun your way through each stage.
If you follow the story mode which is all you’ll be able to play in the beginning as arcade mode is locked, you’ll be attempting to stop the maniacal plans of the black duck army who are once again on the rise and trying to cause mayhem. They apparently want to take over the galaxy, but your job is to stop them from carrying out their plans. It won’t be easy, but that why they send you in. You’re the best there is.
There are seven worlds to play through each with 8 levels per world, and each level is loaded with action and crazy enemies trying to shoot you down. Right from the start it felt like Gunslugs 2 was a bit challenging, and I’m not sure whether this was due to the controls just feeling that way or if the gameplay itself is just a little challenging. Either way it wasn’t extremely easy which was a nice thing to see. It made me feel like I was having to work a little bit for the reward of completing a level. You start off able to play as two different characters, although as you progress more playable characters will unlock. If you can reach the end of each level, which shouldn’t be hard if you’re pumping enough bullets into your foes, you’ll be greeted by bosses of epic proportions that won’t feel like a pushover. The gameplay keeps at a pretty fast pace, it’s chaotic just as Orangepixel explains, and it’s actually pretty fun, we just hope they decide to add gamepad support. You can pick it up in the Play Store for $3.15 if you’re feeling adventurous.

Android Epic App Battles: VLC for Android VS MX Player
If you play videos on your phone there are any number of video players out there for Android, and of course you could always choose to stick with the stock video players that come pre-baked into your phone’s UI. If however you long for a little more support for different types of video formats, and perhaps want a little more in the way of options or features, a third party video player from the Play Store might be what you need. That’s the basis for this app battle, video players. We’ll be putting the long awaited and official VLC for Android up against one of the most popular video players on Android, MX Player. Which one deserves the crown? Which app serves the needs of users better? MX Player has a ton of installs and seems to be very popular, but people have been begging for VLC for android for a while. We’ll go over a few features of each app and let you all decide which app you prefer in the G+ poll.
VLC for Android
VLC for Android is an app that is a long time coming. Users have been begging for VLC for Android for as long as I can remember, and although the app is still in beta status, later last year it was released onto Android and is finally available in the Play Store. VLC is an open-source cross-platform media player for Android, and it supports a wide variety of multimedia files. it also supports discs, devices and network streaming protocols.
It will play most local video and audio files, and it will also play network streams, and DVD ISO’s like the desktop version of VLC player. The media library for audio and video files is built in, and you can browse for all files directly in organized folders. It also supports auto-adjustment and aspect ratio changes so if you start the player in portrait mode but then turn the phone to landscape for better viewing, VLC will adjust accordingly. One really cool feature is the gesture controls for managing the brightness of the display and the volume of the media audio. Instead of having to mess with the volume rocker or enter into settings/display settings to change your brightness or drag down the quick settings panel, the gesture controls can let you do everything without ever having to leave the video. It also supports the controls from connected audio headsets, and the app contains a widget for audio control.
MX Player
MX Player is one of the most popular third party media player apps for Android, and with good reason as it seems to offer some great features while also supporting a wide array multimedia files. MX Player offers intuitive gesture controls for managing volume, brightness and other options for the media player just like you can do with VLC, whil also adding gestures for zooming and panning as well as double tapping to play/pause your videos or audio files.
It also supports subtitles for various file formats, and there’s a gesture control for swiping through the subtitles while a video is playing too. You can even install a plugin to enter “kids lock mode” which keeps the video locked and playing so your kids or who ever you’re letting watch a video on your device can’t exit out of it and start opening other apps. It also offers multi-core decoding, so devices with dual, quad, and octa-core processors should perform quite nicely. It supports just about every type of video file out there including 3gp, avi, divx, f4v, flv, mkv, mp4, mpeg, mov, vob, wmv, webm, xvid and more. MX Player has also gotten a nice little update recently that added in material design, and you can add themes to your MX player so it has a customized look.

Top Android Homescreen January 16th Edition: Flat Tap Toggle
It’s Friday and that means the weekend is here and you’ll have some time to play around with some new phone customizations, and we’ve got just the homescreen for you to tweak your style and give you phone a new look. Like all of our homescreen picks we find our designs at mycolorscreen.com, and this week’s pick is called Flat Tap Toggle. It follows the theme of a totally flat looking style with some really nice colors that almost make us feel like we could have Lollipop installed. This design will require you to have a couple of apps downloaded and installed, and we’ll gloss over what you need and tell you the basics of how to set this theme up.
First and foremost, make sure to grab the apps you need, which starts with a third party home launcher. This one suggests Nova Launcher Prime, so we’d go with that although Apex pro should be able to give you the same type of options to make this design work. You’re also going to need Zooper widgets pro, which is what you’ll use to apply the widget skins to the homescreen.
Once you have those installed, set your homescreen grid to 10 x 8, and make sure you have two homescreen pages. You can download the files from the dropbox link that is provided by the theme’s creator on the mycolorscreen page for this design. On the first homescreen, long press and select widgets and then find Zooper, then select the popup calendar and music widgets for the first screen. For the second screen, apply all the tap toggle button widgets, and that’s pretty much it. Rumor: Google Potentially Looking To Buy Softcard For Under $100 Million
When the world of mobile payments just started to hit the scene, Google was more or less pioneering a new feature with the introduction of Google Wallet. Although sadly it didn’t catch on as rapidly or as vastly as we had hoped, at least not in the Google Wallet form. This in part could have been due to the decision of carriers choosing to forego the offering of supporting Google Wallet, and instead supporting their own system which was then known as ISIS Mobile Wallet. Not too long after news started appearing about the ISIS extremist group, ISIS promptly changed their name to Softcard, and it’s that company which Google may now be in talks to potentially purchase.
According to Tech Crunch who seems to have first reported on this story, unnamed sources state that Google could be looking to add Softcard to their list of companies to own. Whether or not it pans out is unknown, but if Google did buy up Softcard it would certainly put them in line to have support at POS systems within carriers throughout the country, and that would likely cause a huge jump for Google Wallet too.
Other unconfirmed details at this point are the purchase price, which is stated as being potentially under $100 million, and the fact that Google may be buying Softcard with the intention of merely gathering up the patents and carrier relationships. At one point in time Google was making a push to get its Google Wallet platform supported by the carriers, but the carriers banded together and created their own platform to use instead, so we know Google at least at one point in time, had an interest in having Google Wallet as a payment option within major US carrier stores. It stands to reason that they could want nothing more to do with Softcard than their patents for improving or enhancing their own technology, as well as finally have a way in with the carriers that currently support Softcard. For now these are just rumors until Google or Softcard gives the confirmation, but this is definitely something to keep on the radar as this could really drive forward the Google Wallet platform adoption.

Manual Camera Comes To Android Letting You Manually Adjust Things Like ISO And Shutter Speed
When it comes to smartphone cameras, the stock Android camera has never been known for taking the best images. Whether you feel it comes down to the software or simply the image sensors used in the device, the stock camera always could have been better. That isn’t to say that the pictures coming from devices running a completely stock version of Android while using the stock camera app don’t put out a decent or even stellar image. We’ve seen them. If you’re not a fan of the stock camera app though and you’re running a smartphone with Lollipop on board, and you crave the ability to gain full control over low level camera features like ISO, shutter speed, and other features, Manual Camera just hit the Play Store for Android devices.
The only downside to Manual Camera at the moment is that it is only compatible with the Nexus 5 and the Nexus 6 currently. This is only due to the fact that those are the only two devices, according to the developer, which are compatible with manual camera controls. Until other OEM’s update their devices that have Lollipop on it to gain access to manual camera controls via Lollipop’s Camera2 API, Manual Camera will not work for those phones. For the devices this does work for though, it seems to be a dream for anyone looking to modify and adjust each of the included settings manually.
You can alter and manually adjust the shutter speed of the camera as we stated above, but Manual Camera offers more than just manual shutter speed control. You can manually dial in on the Focus Distance, the ISO, the White Balance, and the Exposure Compensation too, and based on a number of the reviews it seems to take pictures insanely fast, living up to its boasted capability from the dev to do so. There are also other additional features included like geotagging of images, gridlines, a timer, max screen brightness on/off, sound on/off, and RAW photo format. If you’ve been looking for a little more control over your photos and you use either a Nexus 5 or a Nexus 6, you can grab Manual Camera for $1.99 in the Play Store as of now.

Some Nexus 6 owners receiving defective units where the back cover is coming unglued
If you’re feeling bummed out about how nearly impossible it is to pick up a Nexus 6 right now, the good news? You may have dodged a bullet. We’ve been receiving reports of defective Nexus 6 units being shipped to customers where the back covers are literally coming off.
The severity of the separation seems to vary by unit and although it seems like it could have something to do with the glue Motorola uses to secure the back cover in place, some have reported defective batteries that are expanding, causing the back cover to raise from its housing. If you’re noticing this problem on your device, we’d advise you to take caution. As we’ve seen in the past, exploding batteries are not fun.
Where some Nexus 6 units are coming out of the box with the back plate coming off, others are reporting that it’s a slower process, not seeing the issue until a few weeks down the road. We’ve even seen reports of back plates raising on the Motorola Moto X 2014, and I myself experienced a similar issue with my Motorola DROID Turbo a few weeks back.
One Redditor claims that he, and four of his friends have the separation on their devices but are using a TPU case to cover it up out of fear that a a new replacement would only have the same problem. As for me, I just got off the phone with a buddy of mine and sure enough, his Nexus 6 is also separating. Motorola Support confirmed they’re “seeing a few” back covers popping off in response to the below user’s tweet:
@MotorolaSupport my nexus 6’s back cover is coming away from the body.. Already happened once and had a replacement. What’s going on??

So, what can you do if you receive a defective unit? We’d recommend contacting the retailer where you purchased the device from as this is clearly a manufacturer’s defect and if given the option, ask for a refund and then re-purchase the device brand new. The Nexus 6 is in very short supply and if you simply opt for a replacement, often times you’ll receive a refurbished unit (which can have their own set of problems). Just giving you a heads up.
Those of you looking to purchase a Nexus 6 used — whether off eBay or Craigslist — may want to thoroughly check for the separation defect before buying or avoid the secondhand market altogether. Nothing worse than being stuck with a defective phone and no proof of purchase when you need to get an RMA.

DODO premium leather straps for Motorola Moto 360 now available
A new set of straps are available directly from Motorola for its Moto 360 smartwatch. The premium leather straps come from DODO in four different color options: blue, green, red, and tan. The product listing says that the DODO premium leather straps are suitable for day-to-day use or formal attire. The price is set high at $59, but that is expected for something labeled as premium leather.
