By now we are all used to companies releasing camera based smartphones at smartphone events. However, that’s where Panasonic changed things up. Instead of going down the conventional methods, Panasonic decided to drop a smartphone at a camera event. This took a lot of people by surprise as Panasonic introduced their Lumix CM1 smartphone. With a smartphone dropping at a camera event (and especially one made by Panasonic), it is probably not too surprising to learn that the big selling point for this phone was its camera. In fact, the camera on the CM1 came with a 20MP camera with a one-inch sensor, which is typically more in line with what you find on high-end cameras. In addition to this, the CM1 also came with a f/2.8 Leica Lens adding to its value.
That was not all though. The rest of the specs were rather decent too. The CM1 offered a 4.7” 1080 display. Inside the CM1 was loaded with 2GB RAM and a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. In terms of memory, the CM1 comes with 16GB internal storage as well as a microSD card slot for additional storage. Not to mention the device came running on Android 4.4 (KitKat) and powered by a 2,600mAh battery.
Well, as mentioned, the device was launched back in September at the Photokina photography trade show in Germany. Following on from this, it was expected that the device would only be released in a handful of countries (mostly Europe). Although, back in November the news did break that the device would also make its way to the UK. However, today at CES, Panasonic have announced that the CM1 will be coming to the US. If this is sounding like something you would be interested in, then the good news is that the device is reportedly going to land in the US unlocked and therefore will be compatible with all major carriers. The bad news is that this will not be a cheap handset with the expected retail price being in the region of $1000. In terms of when, the device should be landing in the US sometime in the summer.
