Don’t Miss These Android Stories: December 18, 2015

This week, we came to a full realization that the tech world is settling nicely into the holiday season, as big news isn’t exactly arriving in mass quantities. Still, we reviewed the $1,500 TAG Heuer Connected, unboxed the Moto 360 Sport, reacted to the first Galaxy S7 rumor worth talking about, and even sat down for episode 99 of the Droid Life Show.

Oh, we also shared more and more last minute holiday deals, many of which you can find below in our list of the best Android stories of the week.

Be sure to catch up because CES is close.

BB-8 is the new Jar Jar.

Tip: Don’t Forget About the Nexus 6P’s Notification Light

Did you know that the Nexus 6P has a notification light? It does. It’s not on by default, though, which is a shame, because it’s a nice addition to the phone’s Ambient Display. If you are the type who gets up from a desk repeatedly throughout a day or is without your phone for lengthy periods of time, this can come in handy, as it lets you know that you still have notifications, long after Ambient has gone away.

If you weren’t aware of the phone’s notification light, you can find controls for it in Settings>Sound & notification. Once in that screen, there is an option to toggle it to “on” further down the page under a “Notification” heading. You should see it listed as “Pulse notification light.”

Toggle that on and as notifications arrive, you will get both the Ambient Display quick pop-up along with a pulsing notification LED just to the left of the phone’s front-facing camera. What makes this a great complimentary piece to Ambient Display, is because as Ambient Display goes dark in between your next notification, the LED light will continue to flash and let you know that there are pending notifications you need to check on.

It also appears to be a multi-color LED, so if you want to get real busy with it, you can install something like Light Flow and put in work.

Sign-Up for Verizon’s go90 and You’ll Get 2GB Extra Data for 3 Months

Verizon has this video service called go90. They initially launched a beta version of the app in September before pushing it live for all in October. It’s basically an attempt by Verizon to cash in on the waves of people watching video on their mobile devices. I couldn’t tell you if it is at all successful so far or if it will be, but I know that Tim – our resident mobile video consumption professional – spent 5 minutes with the app and then immediately uninstalled it. I think if I asked him to re-install again, he would quit working for DL on the spot.

With that said, Verizon will give you 2GB of free data for the next three months if you install the app and sign-up for an account. After you sign-up and see the free data hit your device, you can then uninstall it and never look back. The extra data can be used for whatever you want, not just go90 streaming.

A reader of ours took on the challenge today and said that he received a text message immediately confirming his free data, before further confirming the data was already available in his account moments later.

According to Verizon, the free data is only available to people on MORE Everything or The Verizon Plan. For all the specifics on the 2GB promotion, hit up this link.

The Droid Life Show: Episode 99

The year is coming to end, but we’re also closing in on episode 100 of the Droid Life Show. Oh, how far we have come. This isn’t 100, though, it’s 99 and there is plenty to talk about before we kick off some sort of celebration.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens Now Available for Pre-Order on Google Play

Like all other blockbusters from this year, Google has been quick to list movie titles for pre-order on Google Play, which is what just happened for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Whether you lined up last night or plan on seeing it this weekend, there is hardly a shred of doubt in my heart that many of you will go home from the theater and want to own this movie.

For the SD version, the price is set at $14.99, while the HD version is listed at $19.99. While no official release date has been set from the studio, estimations are that April will be the month of release.

And if you need the music in your life, you can find the official soundtrack right here for $11.49.

Evernote Shutting Down Support for Clearly, Evernote for Pebble, and Versions of Skitch

Evernote announced that they will be ending support for multiple functions yesterday, bringing what is virtually a demise to Skitch for Windows, iOS, and Android, as well as Evernote Clearly and Evernote for Pebble. Officially, Evernote is shutting down support this week, but this does not mean your apps won’t work. Until operating systems update to the point that you can’t use the apps, they should work fine. Just don’t expect updates or any kind of technical support.

As for what brought on the end of support, Evernote claims they must, “focus on improving the core Evernote experience.” Continuing, the team states that they have big plans for 2016 and beyond.

For those here who use these apps and need alternatives, Evernote states that they have incorporated many of the best features of Skitch and Clearly into their core applications. Skitch users can find “nearly identical” annotation functionality in the Evernote Windows and iOS apps. In addition, the article simplification features from Clearly are available in Evernote’s Web Clipper. Folks with a Pebble watch can find similar Evernote features with the Powernoter app for Pebble.

And before anyone with a Mac freaks out, don’t worry, support for Skitch on Mac is not dying yet.

RIP

Sprint’s LG G4 is Getting Marshmallow!

Oh, well hello there Sprint and LG. Look at you making Marshmallow moves before the holidays.

The LG G4 on Sprint, according to Sprint’s support sites that are almost always updated precisely as updates begin to rollout, is getting Android 6.0 this week. Actually, the update may have started last night, but should rollout to more devices today and throughout the next couple of weeks.

The update is arriving as build LS991ZV9 and includes the update to Marshmallow, along with Sprint Global Roaming. Sprint or LG haven’t given us any other details about Marshmallow and how it’ll play off of LG’s skin, but you should get all of the goodies like Doze, Now on Tap, app permission controls, SD card as internal storage, etc.

Let us know if you get it!

Cheers DimStyle!
