Google to Stop Development and Support for Android Developer Tools (ADT) in Eclipse at End of 2015

Google announced big changes for developers today in a post to the official Android Developers blog, stating the company is to stop development and support for Android Developer Tools (ADT) in Eclipse at the end of this year.

Over the next few months, Google will continue to improve upon Android Studio, its new go-to for app development. For developers, this means that it is time to migrate any existing Eclipse ADT projects into Android Studio. As Google notes, this process is very simple – File, New, Import Project in Android Studio.

As stated in the post by the Android Developers team, “We are focused on Android Studio so that our team can deliver a great experience on a unified development environment. Android tools inside Eclipse will continue to live on in the open source community via the Eclipse Foundation.”

If you develop, it’s time to migrate.

How to: Use Always-On Apps With Android Wear

This morning, Google shared with us a list of recently updated apps that can all take advantage of Android Wear’s new always-on apps feature in 5.1. The feature is useful in situations where you may want to keep information from an app up on your screen, but you don’t necessarily want it blasting out in full color and brightness, eating up that tiny watch battery.

Always-on apps allow you to take advantage of your watch’s ambient or always-on mode, where your watch can dim itself to a black-and-white-heavy screen that conserves battery without fully turning off your display. By allowing apps to use this low-power mode, you could do things like keep your boarding pass up on your watch until the moment you need it, leave running information on display without having to dig for the running app while moving, or quickly view a shopping list.

As more apps build in always-on functionality, I think we will all find this new feature to be incredibly useful. For now, we want to make sure you all know how to activate it and have put together this quick tutorial.

Moto X (2nd Gen) on Verizon is Indeed Getting Android 5.1 Lollipop Via Soak Test

Remember that soak test for a “preview of a new software release” for the Verizon Moto X (2nd gen) that was supposed to begin last week? It started today. You know how we assumed it would be Android 5.1 Lollipop? It is. In fact, it’s Android 5.1, system version 23.16.3, and is roughly 500MB in size.

Assuming this soak test works out OK for testers, it shouldn’t be long before Verizon and Motorola start a slow rollout to the rest of the owners of this phone.

If you want to check out the full changelog for the update, you can find it here.

For those who are a part of the soak, enjoy those beautiful animations.

Google Lists a Few Helpful Always-On Android Wear Apps, Including Runtastic and GolfShot

In a blog post to the official Android site, Google details a few always-on apps for Android Wear that can benefit smartwatch users whenever they may be needed. Apps such as MapMyRun, Delta Airlines, and GolfShot can keep you informed at all times, while also not blowing your battery life out of the water.

To get started with always-on apps through Android Wear, first make sure you have it enabled under your settings menu. Then, place your palm over the device while the app is running, or wait for the screen to timeout. You will see your colorful app turn to black and white, meaning it is now always-on.

In a few cases, having an always-on app can be very helpful, such as when you go for a run or are at the airport. If you are taking a jog around the block, apps like Endomondo and Runtastic can be left as always-on, meaning that while you are running, you can easily glance down at your watch and see all of your data, without having to turn the watch on with a flick of the wrist.

Maybe you are at the airport? Apps from Delta, American Airlines, and KLM can be left on, making sure you can quickly access your boarding pass while getting roughed up by the TSA. In addition, they can show you flight status, gate number, and seat information all from the wrist, keeping your phone safely in your pocket.

If you are looking for a few new apps for Android Wear, Google has a little curated selection on Google Play right here.

Android 5.1 Available to All With a Moto X (2nd Gen) Pure Edition

According to Motorola’s David Schuster, master of the update on updates, “full deployment” of Android 5.1 to the US Moto X (2nd gen) “Pure Edition” has begun.

The update is available to those on builds 22.21.11.victara_tmo.tmo.en.US and 23.11.14.victara_tmo.tmo.en.US. For those of us on that really early build of 23.1.28, well, who knows if we’ll ever see an update.

To grab the update, head into Settings>About phone and hammer on that “System updates” button.
