LG G5 Arrives April 1 at US Cellular

Last week, LG told us to expect the G5 to launch in the US in “early” April. According to a reliable source of ours, US Cellular will open up a pre-order for LG’s new flagship on March 28, before making it available in stores on April 1. No, this isn’t an April Fools’ joke.

US Cellular will price the G5 at $636 without a contract, $199 on 2-year agreement, or $26.50 per month for 24 months. If anything, that should give us an idea as to what other carriers in the US might charge.

During launch, from March 28 through April 17, LG will run a promotion that will land G5 customers a free battery, battery charging cradle, and USB Type-C adapter. The total value for the accessory bundle is around $80 and is similar to the promotion LG ran last year for the G4.

These launch plans, obviously, don’t confirm anything for other carriers like Verizon, AT&T, or T-Mobile, but I’d be pretty surprised if they also weren’t targeting April 1.

Question of the Day: Do You Use a 3rd Party Launcher? Which One?

In today’s Galaxy S7 tips and tricks video, the 2nd to last tip I suggest is for you to swap out the Samsung TouchWiz launcher and app drawer for something on Google Play, a 3rd party launcher. I suggest this in almost every single tips and tricks video because 3rd party launchers really can turn your phone into a powerhouse of efficiency (and Samsung’s launcher is terrible).

With a 3rd party launcher, you can easily change the look of your phone with an icon pack, take more control over the layout of widgets and icons and other home screen add-ons, introduce gestures for accessing settings or apps or shortcuts, and even do really cool things like access an app’s widget with a swipe on its icon. 3rd party launchers are awesome. In fact, changing to Nova Launcher – the DL favorite – is the first thing I do after completing a review of a phone.

For today’s question, it seemed like the perfect time to catch-up on the launchers you are all using these days. Are you still using a 3rd party launcher? If so, which one and why?

Video: 20+ Galaxy S7 Tips and Tricks

Now that our Galaxy S7 review is ready, it’s time to switch our focus over to helping you get the most out of your new phone, assuming you plan to pick-up a Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 Edge. We tend to do that after major phone launches by sharing a handful of tips and tricks through a series we started all the way back with the Galaxy S4 and One (M7). Since we already gave you the first 10 things you should do after setting up your S7, in this next video, we’ll continue that thought and move into adjusting even more settings.

During this 20+ Galaxy S7 tips and tricks video, we’ll mention the Quick Launch camera shortcut again, along with Always-on Display, but we’ll also talk about moving apps to SD, adjusting default apps, learning about the phone’s “Advanced Features,” when battery saver modes might come in handy, and how to reset specific areas of your phone without doing a full factory reset.

Enjoy!

Uber Intros Family Profiles, Pay for Your Kid or Friend’s Ride

Today, Uber introduced Family Profiles, the easiest way to make sure your children, friends, and loved ones are getting around safely through the city.

When a Family Profile is created, multiple users can request rides from the same account, with Uber billing a single payment form. For example, if you have a kid in college in a different city, that child can request an Uber and pay for it using the Family Profile (mom or dad’s credit card), instead of using their own money.

Uber specifies that they don’t care whether someone is an actual family member or not. You can even add plain ol’ friends to the Family Profile, allowing you to gift rides to whoever, whenever you want. All you need to do is add someone from within the updated Uber app, have that person accept your invitation, and that’s it. You can have a max of up to 10 people in the same Family Profile.

Be on the lookout for the update.

Note: At launch, Family Profiles will be limited to Atlanta, Dallas and Phoenix.

T-Mobile to Offer Free Season of MLB.TV Premium to Customers

Last year, T-Mobile offered a free MLB At Bat subscription for mobile customers. That subscription carried a $20 value, which was a nice little extra goodie, but for 2016, T-Mobile should be your only choice in wireless carriers if baseball is your sport of choice. For this year’s baseball season, T-Mobile will offer a complete season of MLB.TV Premium, a $110 value, for absolutely free.

With MLB.TV Premium, you can stream all of the diamond action live in HD, get access to Home and Away broadcasts, and in addition, you will receive a MLB At Bat subscription for the year. As a diehard baseball guy, I can tell you, life isn’t complete without MLB.TV.

From what I can see, as the offer won’t be live until April 3, these subscriptions are not limited to just your smartphone either. With Premium, users can cast games straight to the TV, take the action in on a desktop computer, or on a gaming console. For a complete list of supported devices, click here.

Now, onto the important details. T-Mobile states that this offer is only open from April 3 to April 10. That’s one week. During this time, you must be on T-Mobile’s network in order to redeem the offer. After speaking with a T-Mobile representative, I can confirm that Simple Choice, as well as prepaid plans through T-Mobile are eligible to redeem this offer.

Starting April 3, if you love baseball, redeem this offer.

Root Explorer, the One and Only, Receives Material Design Refresh

It’s been quite a while since we last mentioned Root Explorer, but back in the day, it was virutally the only file manager we used. Back when rooting and using custom ROMs was our thing, Root Explorer allowed us place files and transfer data to wherever we wanted on our phones, which is not the case on a non-rooted device.

With that said, the app has received a major update on Google Play, bringing a complete Material Design refresh with it. As you will see, the slide out menu has been added for quicker navigation, a floating action button has been placed, and the overall look is much cleaner than the previous UI.

For those who don’t already own this app, the price is set at $3.99, but if you root and ROM, this is the go-to option. If you don’t root, don’t worry, this app is still a solid and comprehensive option for your file management needs.

Go grab that update.

DEAL: Nexus 6P, Moto X Pure Edition, Galaxy S7, and Galaxy S7 Edge Still on Sale

In case you missed the news last week, there are plenty of high-end devices still on sale this week, including the Nexus 6P, Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 Edge, and Moto X Pure Edition.

For the Nexus 6P, it can purchased directly through Amazon or Best Buy, with Amazon listing the device at about $75 off retail. On Best Buy, the phone is $50 off, but also comes with free Speck case for the phone’s protection.

The Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge can be found on eBay for $599 and $699 respectively. These are international models, meaning they come equipped with the Exynos processor, instead of the Snapdragon 820. However, they should work just fine on AT&T and T-Mobile’s LTE networks.

The Moto X Pure Edition can be purchased through Motorola, Best Buy, and Amazon starting at $299. At $299, for the 16GB model, you can purchase the White and Bamboo option directly from Amazon, or you can customize your own through Moto Maker.

LastPass Authenticator Makes Your Password Bank Even More Safe

The new LastPass Authenticator app, available on both Android and iOS, is here to make your passwords super safe. Using two-factor authentication, you can be sure that no one will gain access to your password, except for you.

Coupled with the LastPass service, the way two-factor authentication works is pretty simple. When logging into LastPass, the service will send out a unique code, which will then be used during the sign-in process. The code is only sent to you, via mobile phone or other form, meaning only those with this code will gain access.

Going beyond LastPass, you can use LastPass Authenticator wherever Google Authenticator is supported. This is big for anyone who appreciates knowing their info is secure and completely in their own control. As shown in one of the photos on the app’s landing page, LastPass Authenticator supports Android Wear, allowing you to get through the verification process seamlessly.

The app is completely free to download and use.

FYI: A Few ADB Commands Will Get You Adoptable Storage on the Galaxy S7

Samsung may have left out one of Marshmallow’s potentially more innovative features in adoptable storage, but that doesn’t mean the possibility of it isn’t buried beneath a couple of adb commands. That’s right, Paul Modaco has come up with a simple guide for for enabling adoptable storage, which means you can combine the storage of a microSD card with the internal storage of your Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 Edge.

I won’t go through the whole process, but it sounds pretty simple, assuming you have adb setup and running on a computer nearby. The basics are this. Once in terminal, with “adb shell” run, you can view the list of disks available on the phone for adoption, then tell your phone with another command how you would like to partition your microSD card. There are a couple of options – one for full adoption and another for mixed. Full adoption is what Paul recommends.

Once you start the process, it will take a while, but when it’s finished, you should have something similar to Marshmallow’s adoptable storage. Modaco does mention in his write-up that the storage space reporting seems to be off, yet everything works correctly.

This is what you should see when it’s finished.

Keep in mind that this process will wipe your SD card, so be sure to back everything up before hand.

If moving apps to SD wasn’t enough, this is something to consider. The full instructions can be found at the link below.

Nixon Mission is the Fashion Watch Brand’s First Android Wear Watch

If you have been wondering why there has been so much watch talk around these parts over the past couple of days, it’s because Baselworld is going on over in Switzerland. Baseworld, for those not familiar, is like the CES or MWC of the watch world. It’s a massive watch event where all the biggest watch brands in the world gather to unveil their new products for the coming year. Everyone from Rolex to Fossil are announcing products, some of which happen to be Android related.

Next up, we have Nixon, a younger lifestyle-focused watch company who tends to cater to the skate or surf crowds. They announced a watch this morning called the Mission, which they are calling the “world’s first ultra-rugged, action sports smartwatch.” There are certainly other rugged watches on the market, so they must be banking off the “ultra” term here.

Either way, the watch was built for abuse from waves and stuff, breh. All jokes aside, the watch features “industry-leading” durability and 100M water-resistance. It also runs the new Snapdragon Wear 2100 processor, which you can learn more about here. The display is a fully rounded AMOLED panel, plus the body sports 316L stainless steel, roll cage, Gorilla Glass crystal, custom dual-layer silicon band, and should have the best battery life of any smartwatch to date, assuming the new Snapdragon processor inside can live up to its billing.

The Nixon Mission will arrive in three colors (pictured above and below) and include a couple of exclusive apps for tracking activity and getting current conditions information depending on your location.

The Mission will be available later this year.
