Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, and US Cellular Confirm Plans to Carry Gear S2

Where can you buy the Gear S2 from Samsung? So far, most major US wireless carriers have confirmed plans to carry it. No one gave us pricing or a date of availability, but Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, and US Cellular all said it’ll be in their lineups.

T-Mobile said that for $5, you will be able to add the Gear S2 3G to your plan and get unlimited talk/text, 500MB of high-speed data, and unlimited music streaming. AT&T only confirmed that it will carry the Gear S2. Verizon said it will make both Bluetooth and 3G models available. US Cellular added “this Fall” to their launch plans.

My guess is that Sprint will join the other wireless carriers, but that electronics spots like Best Buy will sell it as well. As we know more, we will update this post.

Be sure to check out the full Gear S2 specs if you haven’t already.

Each watch has a high-res Super AMOLED display, 2-3 day battery life, wireless charging, dual-core processor, WiFi, IP68 water and dust resistance, and NFC for mobile payments. If you were looking for the total package in a Android-ready smartwatch, this is probably it.

Below, because we know some of you love the little details, you will find the full Gear S2 specs, along with those for the Gear S2 Classic and 3G model.

T-Mobile to Stop Network Abusers Who “Steal” Terabytes of High-Speed Data a Month

In a post to the official T-Mobile blog, CEO John Legere announced that the company will begin to crack down on data thieves beginning today. The issue stems from abusers of the carrier’s unlimited high-speed data plan, which also grants a small portion of high-speed data for tethering devices.

According to Legere, approximately 3,000 T-Mobile customers are willfully stealing about 2TBs (yes, terabytes) of data for tethering each month. Utilizing rooted phones, software to help mask network activity, and other various means, these apparent evil-doers are not adding to an honest customer’s experience on T-Mobile. So, to put it simply, Legere is going to shut them down.

As written in Legere’s blog, “These violators are going out of their way with all kinds of workarounds to steal more LTE tethered data. They’re downloading apps that hide their tether usage, rooting their phones, writing code to mask their activity, etc. They are ‘hacking’ the system to swipe high speed tethered data. These aren’t naive amateurs; they are clever hackers who are willfully stealing for their own selfish gain.”

From reading the blog, it is clear Legere is passionate on stopping the data thieves, but assures honest customers that they have nothing to fear. The group of “thieves” is roughly 1/100 of one percent of 59 million customers, so odds are, your 50GB or 100GB a month of Netflix and whatever else you are doing is not an issue. Legere is going after the big fish.

T-Mobile’s first action will be to send out warnings to those who are abusing the network. If nothing changes, access to the plan will be lost, followed by be moved to an entry-level limited 4G LTE data plan. The company issued a document into their forum to breakdown exactly what they intend to do, viewable here.

The moral of the story is, if you tether 2TBs of high-speed data a month, Legere will warn you about it, and then move you to a different plan. Ouch, that slap on the wrist hurts, John!

Samsung Officially Announces Gear S2 and Gear S2 Classic, With NFC Mobile Payments, and More

Samsung just made its new round smartwatches, the Gear S2 and Gear S2 Classic official ahead of press events at IFA in Berlin. We now know specs, battery life, operating system, the differences between each, what the bezel does, how you will navigate around the UI, and also that it will have NFC for mobile payments. Ready to learn?

The Gear S2 Classic was “made for users who prefer a more timeless watch design, offering an elegant Black finish with a matching genuine leather band.” You can see it in the image below. The regular Gear S2 is “ideal for those who are on-the-go and have an admiration for minimal and modern design.” It’s pictured above.

In terms of specs, they each have 1.2-inch circular Super AMOLED displays (320×320, 302ppi), 1.0GHz dual-core processors, run Tizen wearable platform software, IP68 dust and water resistance, 4GB storage, 512MB RAM, NFC, heart rate monitor, WiFi (b/g/n), and have 250mAh batteries that are said to last from 2-3 days on a single charge and can be wirelessly charged.

There is also a 3G version of the Gear S2 that has a 300mAh battery. This model incorporates the “first-ever e-SIM with voice capability,” so you can do all sorts of tasks without being tethered to a phone.

The watches are equipped to send you notifications, allow voice input, and include apps for Nike+ Running and S Health, outside of the standard Samsung S software.

Samsung said that they are working with a bunch of developers and partners to deliver additional watch faces and watch bands. Watch bands for the Gear S2 can be easily swapped with a simple click.

Samsung didn’t announce when they would be available or how much they will cost, only that they will be on display at IFA.

The Gear S2 classic is made for users who prefer a more timeless watch design, offering an elegant Black finish with a matching genuine leather band. The Gear S2 is ideal for those who are on-the-go and have an admiration for minimal and modern design.

New fitness functions on the Samsung Gear S2 will encourage consumers to stay healthy and active. The 24-hour activity log lets users view daily activity progress and patterns at a glance. It will also send reminder updates to motivate users to stay on track with their fitness goals.

For the ultimate convenience, the Samsung Gear S2 comes with NFC technology which will enable mobile payments without the need for a wallet. Samsung is working with a wide selection of partners across different industries to expand the usability of wearables and streamline consumers’ mobile lives in a variety of ways, including smart car keys, residential room keys, and remote controls to manage a connected home.

All of these connected features will be supported by a battery that can last up to 2-3 days, allowing consumers to stay connected without the hassle of constantly having to recharge. To charge, simply place the Samsung Gear S2 on the wireless charging dock right out of the box.

The Samsung Gear S2 reflects Samsung’s commitment to openly collaborate with developers and partners to bring increased customization and applications to its devices. Samsung is working closely with partners to offer a range of watch faces and watch bands so that users can have a variety of ways to express their personal style and mood. Users can easily change the band with one click, and change the watch face for a more personalized and sophisticated Gear experience depending on the time, place or occasion.

A variety of apps optimized for the Gear S2’s circular user interface will be available at launch. Through open collaboration with developers and partners, Samsung is continuing to enrich its wearable ecosystem and provide users with a more optimized and unique smart wearable experience.

Monday Poll: Blackberry Venice, are You Actually Interested?

I posted up the newest images of the Blackberry Venice this morning, thinking it had a substantial amount of hype surrounding it. I now know that I underestimated said hype. You are all crazy in love with the idea of a Blackberry keyboard attached to a Blackberry phone that runs what appears to be mostly-stock Android. I can’t say I fully understand the need for such a device in 2015, now that on-screen keyboards are as good as they are today, but hey, nostalgia is a thing, a real thing.

So, because I need to see the actual numbers that prove this isn’t just a few select fanboyistic droolers who love sliders known as the Blackberry Venice, it’s time for a poll. I need to know – are you really interested in the Blackberry Venice? Like, really really?

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

Soak Test Rolling Out to Verizon Moto X (2nd Gen), Could it be Simultaneous Voice + Data?

A soak test is rolling out to the Moto X (2nd Gen) on Verizon, bringing what could be a very important update for current owners. Still to this day, the Moto X (2nd Gen) does not feature simultaneous voice and data, so it is possible that this soak test will be implementing that feature.

This variant of the Moto X was approved for Android 5.1 in late June, so it it also possible users could see Android 5.1.1, in addition to the voice + data functionality.

Once the update starts hitting devices, we will update the post so everyone knows what Verizon and Motorola are up to.

Here is the letter being sent to owners.

Video: Using Android Wear on iOS!

What’s it like to use an Android Device on iOS, through an iPhone 6? We paired up a Moto 360 (yes, it works) and took it for a spin this morning to find out.

As you can imagine, the experience isn’t as fully featured as it is on Android. You don’t have access to all of your favorite 3rd party Android Wear apps from Google Play, because well, this is iOS and the Apple Appstore, not Google Play. It’s probably unlikely that Apple is going to let Android Wear apps show up or be available for install to an Android Wear watch any time soon either, so yeah, that’s just a part of the deal that Google likely understood going in.

What you do have is a basic notification experience with Google app cards, Google Now info, and some voice activity. You also have some access to watch faces, though they are limited at this time. Some apps give you the opportunity to quickly respond or complete actions (Gmail is one), while others are really just showing notifications.

Is this a full smartwatch experience? No. It may never be. But it does the basic stuff, which for some, is all a smartwatch needs. Maybe more importantly, this gives Apple users choice – choice for a watch that isn’t the overpriced, confusing, calculator-styled Apple Watch.

HTC Zoe App Updated, Brings Smart Trim and Longer Clips

An update for the Zoe app, made by HTC for One device owners, is now available to download on Google Play. Inside the update, which is rather large in terms of additions, users can now create highlight videos locally, with nothing going up into the cloud.

Added features also include a Smart Trim tool, allowing users to trim clips inside of a video. The maximum length of a Zoe has been pushed from 30 seconds to 3 minutes, and you can now download your existing Zoes from the cloud with your login online.

If you rock a supported One device, go get that update.

What’s New

  • Create highlight videos locally on your phone without uploading.
  • Maximum length increased from 30 seconds to 3 minutes.
  • Include as many clips as you like within the 3 minute time limit.
  • Smart Trim. Toggling smart trim on/off enables video clips to be trimmed or to play in their entirety within the Zoe.
  • Login to download your existing Zoes from the cloud.

We have IFA all this week, so Android fans best be ready for a ton of fun announcements from companies such as Motorola, Huawei, and Samsung. The Q&A Sessions are your chance to ask us anything that might be on your, whether it be Android-related, non Android-related, and everything in between.

Shoot those questions below in the comment section, and then on Friday, our team will choose the best ones to tackle.

Google’s OnHub WiFi Router App Hits Google Play

The official companion app for Google’s OnHub WiFi Router, is now available on Google Play for new owners to download. The app is what makes your new router so “smart,” offering you the ability to set priority devices, run networks tests, and share your network name and password with friends.

Once you are all set up, users can also change settings to the router, which means there are no more crazy, convoluted URLs to access through a browser to change specific functions. There is no denying, your typical router is sometimes a total pain in the rear, and OnHub looks to combat this.

The OnHub router costs $199, available in Black and Blue. If you already have one, or are receiving yours in the mail soon, be sure to grab the application on Google Play.

Features

  • Set up your OnHub in just a few minutes
  • Learn how to improve your Wi-Fi connection if there’s a slowdown
  • Run a network check to test your connection speed
  • Easily share your network name and password to friends & family
  • Make changes to your settings, such as your network name or password
  • Remotely provide or receive help from friends and family

Moto 360 Can Pair With Android Wear on iOS After All

Google just announced that Android Wear had come to iOS, while also introducing the Apple users of the world to this concept called choice. But along with that announcement, they mentioned that only the LG Watch Urbane, plus a bunch of soon-to-be-released watches were capable of working with iOS at this time, not any older Android Wear devices like the Moto 360. That (unsurprisingly) bummed a number of you out.

To make sure that Google wasn’t fibbing on us a bit, we decided to see if we could pair a Moto 360 with an iPhone on the new Android Wear iOS app. Turns out, it worked! Look!

We have a Moto 360 paired with an iPhone 6. It’s receiving notifications, showing Google-related cards like weather and flight information. We got asked to allow it to show notifications and talk to our calendar and all that good stuff.

So yeah, if you have an Android Wear device running the latest 1.3 update, feel free to give it a shot and try to pair it with your iPhone.

Blackberry Venice…This Thing Right Here

The Blackberry Venice, a phone coupled with a slideout physical keyboard and mostly-stock Android, has fanboys of tech giggling like little boys who found their penis for the first time. It’s a keyboard! Like, the ones from back in the day on terrible smartphones that had good keyboards, but there is this thing called Android with it too! BEST. OF. ALL. WORLDS. I loved 2005!

Seriously, though, I haven’t seen this level of nerd hype since…I got nothing. But yeah, it’s everywhere right now, especially thanks to a massive leak out of Tinhte

Look at this thing.

blackberry venice

We really don’t know much other than these pictures show Galaxy S6 Edge-like display, SIM and SD card slots, either a 16MP or 18MP camera (depending on your eyes) that has super-duper fast autofocus and dual flashes, really random button setup (is that power in-between volume up and down?), and yep, a keyboard.

I think it’s poll time. We need to get to the bottom of this.

Android Wear Comes to iOS

The day has finally come, and the potential Android Wear customer base has now grown exponentially. Starting this week, Android Wear works on iOS, with all of the same features that Android users get. It has the Google Now cards, a few native applications, fitness tracking, and much more.

Supported iPhones (iPhone 5, 5c, 5s, 6, or 6 Plus running iOS 8.2+) will be able to access all of the same helpful information Android users see, with the exception to the vast array of custom watch faces found on Google Play. Google states there will be a curated set of 3rd-party faces that are usable, but for now, your choices seem somewhat limited.

As for usable devices, the LG Watch Urbane is the only currently supported smartwatch, but all of the upcoming watches from Motorola, ASUS, and Huawei will be supported. So just to be clear, your current Moto 360, G Watch R, Gear Live, ZenWatch, or any other Android Wear smartwatch are not supported.

If you could not already guess, this is big for iPhone fans.

Leaks Show Moto 360 (2nd Gen) Press Pics, Supposed Moto 360 “Sport”

Oh the hype is so real right now. IFA kicks off this week in Berlin and we are expecting to be consumed by a new wave of Android Wear smartwatches. Previous reports have suggested that Motorola, Huawei, ASUS, and LG will all unveil new Android Wear products, a couple of which we think we know about.

Motorola is probably at the top of the list, thanks to the popularity amongst Android enthusiasts over their original Moto 360. I think it’s safe to say that we all want to see the 2nd gen Moto 360 sooner than later. Through a batch of leaked press renders over the weekend, we have some clean new looks to chat about.

Former professional leaker Evan Blass gave us the image at the top of the post, which appears to be straight up online store or press renders of the new Moto 360 (2nd gen). We are seeing both black and silver casings, along with metal and leather band options. Neither of those details are necessarily news, since that’s exactly what we got with the original. But, we are seeing that 2-o’clock crown position and lugs attached to the watch’s body that are most indeed new to this watch.

As you all know, the previous Moto 360 had the cleanest design (and still has in my opinion) of any smartwatch, with its round casing, little bezel, and lack of lugs, that allowed watch band to almost disappear minimally into its body. This new version has that same minimal bezel, but man, I don’t know that any of us wanted lugs. I think we all just wanted that black bar to go away and to see improvements on the inside, like a processor not made in 2009.

And here are a couple of additional photos, courtesy of @upleaks. Here we have metal band options, plus gold color choices:

moto 360 2nd gen metal1

moto 360 2nd gen metal2

Finally, @upleaks also gave us the first picture of a watch they are calling the Moto 360 Sport. This is what it looks like.

moto 360 sport

This is the first we are hearing of a sport model, but I can see how this might be a good arena for Motorola to re-enter. Fitness products are all the rage these days. If you can create a fitness related smartwatch that does more than just a tracker, with sport-like band (seen above) and fitness-ready apps to track runs, workouts, and other activities, you could have something.

We still have no idea on pricing or availability. We should know this week, assuming Motorola comes through with announcements over the next couple of days.

Thoughts?

Cheers Ryan and Robert!
