OnePlus Chooses Name For Its New ROM—OxygenOS, More Information Coming February 12th

OxygenOS-Thumb OnePlus And Cyanogen ended their relationship on a sour note last year, leaving the former in a position to start producing its own software. After putting a team together, it started developing ROMs for the OnePlus One independently. Of course, these builds needed a name. So as the company is want to do, it held a contest. The winning name is, without further ado, OxygenOS.

OxygenOS

Why this name? OnePlus finds oxygen, the element, to be highly inspirational.

Huawei Ascend P8 to launch on April 15th in London

OnePlus officially names their forthcoming ROM OxygenOS

oxygenos oneplus one

Don’t look now, but OnePlus just found a new name for their in-house ROM that’ll serve as the primary operating system for their phones in the future. The name is OxygenOS, and it was chosen thanks to the necessity of the element in all facets of life. To hear OnePlus tell it:

Oxygen is all around us. It’s part of us and everything we do. It creates the water that carves out valleys and moves mountains. By itself, it’s simple and pure—a fundamental building block. But, as a part of something greater, it can do amazing things. Just like us.

I didn’t say “don’t look now” because the name or meaning behind it is bad. In fact, it’s actually one of the coolest names out there. Rather, we urge you not to look now because there’s nothing to know right now.

We’ll be let in on more details February 12th, but until then all we know about the company’s efforts is that they’re still in the very early alpha stages of what they hope will turn out to be the perfect software for their current — and likely future — smartphones.

We now have “4.5G” and “Pre-5G” technology

Act Fast: You have until 9am Pacific to request an Inbox by Gmail invite

inbox by gmail

If, for some ridiculous reason, you don’t have the easy-to-secure invite to Inbox by Gmail already you’ll be glad to know that another opportunity has opened up… but only if you act fast. Google is giving out invites to anyone who emails them by 9AM Pacific standard time at inbox@google.com (it has to be from a Gmail address).

Inbox, if you don’t know, is Google’s new take on email, a simplified inbox that’ll group like-items and allow you to take action on multiple emails at the same time. It’ll group travel email into the same bundle and automatically add itineraries and such to your calendar, or you can get a look at all of the email you don’t want to see (such as bill alerts) in one fell swoop.

Inbox has features for “snoozing” emails to make them reappear at a later time in case you can’t get to it right away. It’s a pretty big change at first, but many who have gotten used to it exclaim they wouldn’t dare go back to the old way

You can try Inbox without having to give up your traditional Gmail experience so if you don’t end up liking it it’s rather easy to switch back. There are apps for iOS and Android, and you should note that the web version only works in Google Chrome (though Google swears that will change eventually). In the meantime, check out the cool infographic straight ahead to see exactly how people are using Inbox to help regain control of their email.

HTC Unveiled The Desire 816G Dual SIM Refresh In India With A More Powerful CPU And More Storage

HTC Desire 816G Dual SIM Refresh (Jan 2015)

HTC is trying to leave their mark in China and India, the two biggest smartphone markets in the world, in order to sell more devices and by doing that raise their profits. This Taiwan-based company had to cut costs in 2014 in order turn some profit because their sales weren’t doing so well, but I do believe that HTC is making all the right moves in order to change that. We’ll see how the company will fare this year. Anyhow, they have announced three new devices in India back in September, including the mid-range Desire 816G dual SIM handset. That device is already on sale in India, for quite some time now actually, I believe since October, but HTC something else to show us.

The company has just launched the new dual-SIM (two nano SIMs) variant of the Desire 816G device in India. This is basically the same handset that was announced in September, but this time around it is powered by a faster CPU and comes with more internal storage. That being said, let’s check out its specifications. The refreshed Desire 816G features a 5.5-inch 720p (1280 x 720) display along with 1GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage (expandable via microSD card up to 32GB). This device is also powered by a MediaTek chip it seems (even though that wasn’t confirmed by the company), but this time around it comes with a more powerful unit clocked at 1.7GHz. 13-megapixel snapper is located at the back of this thing and flanked by an LED flash, while there’s a 5-megapixel shooter available up front. Android 4.4 KitKat comes pre-installed on this device with HTC’s Sense UI 6.0 on top of it. HTCs BoomSound speakers are also present here, as well as 2,600mAh battery which is located on the inside. As far as connectivity goes, this device comes with 3G HSPA+, Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS and A-GPS support. The device is 7.9mm thick and weighs 158 grams.

“The new offering under the HTC Desire series is our next step towards a power-packed combination of beautiful design and flagship performance all backed by a powerful 1.7 GHz Octa-Core Processor. The HTC Desire 816G is the best buy amongst big screen devices, packing powerful performance and innovative design perfectly at a great price,” said Faisal Siddiqui, Vice President and Country Head of HTC India. This new iteration of the Desire 816G dual SIM will be available soon across India and will cost Rs. 19,990 ($323).

Meizu M1 And M1 Note In Images, Side-By-Side Comparison

Meizu M1 and M1 Note China side-by-side_1

Meizu has announced a bunch of new hardware at their event in Beijing recently. Meizu’s newest M1 handset definitely stole the spotlight at that event, but the company has also announced a couple of ‘Home Automation’ devices as part of their LifeKit platform. This China-based company has also re-announced their partnership with Haier and a couple of Haier-branded products, as well as a new, China-only, M1 Note handset. This device is basically the same as the version that was announced in December last year, but it is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 615 SoC, instead of the MediaTek MT6752. Meizu M1 and M1 Note look basically the same on the outside, except for their size, Meizu M1 sports a 5-inch display, while the M1 Note features a 5.5-inch panel.

That being said, first side-by-side comparison images surfaced in China. If you take a look at the gallery down below, you’ll find a bunch of Meizu M1 vs Meizu M1 Note comparison images. Both of these handsets are made out of plastic, as you can see in the images, and these models in particular are white-colored. I’m sure that this will help some of you decide which size fits you better in case you can’t try out both, or at least check out their looks side-by-side, again, if you can’t do that in person, and I’m sure most of you can’t.

There are significant differences between these two devices in term of specs though, the Meizu M1 features a 5-inch 720p (1280 x 768) display, while the M1 Note sports a 5.5-inch 1080p (1920 x 1080) panel. Meizu M1 ships with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of expandable internal storage, while the M1 Note comes with 2GB of RAM and either 16 or 32GB of non-expandable in-built storage. They are powered by different chips as well, the smaller M1 device is powered by MediaTek’s MT6732 quad-core chip clocked at 1.5GHz, while the bigger M1 devices comes with either the MediaTek MT6752 octa-core SoC running at 1.7GHz or the Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 615 octa-core processor (China-only). Camera sensors are the same, but the M1 Note sports dual-LED, dual-tone flash, while its smaller brother ships with a single LED flash. In case you’d like to get more info on each of these, visit our announcement articles for the M1 and the M1 Note.

Leaked Information Suggests That The LG G4 Might Feature A 3K Display

AH LG 3 2014 -29 LG LOGO

LG has released company’s 2014 financial results recently, and they are doing great, really great in fact. Their annual profit has doubled in 2014 and they’ve sold almost 60 million smartphones in 2014. One of the most important factors in those sales and profit was definitely company’s current flagship (not counting the G Flex 2), the LG G3. This is a great device, LG really did an awesome job designing this thing, its software could still be improved in my humble opinion, but it’s a great phone overall. That being said, its successor, the G4, is due to arrive in the following months, and we’ve already seen a bunch of rumors regarding that phone.

We have some new info to share with you now though. A new LG handset, carrying the LG-VS999 model number, has been spotted in a leaked document. This model is supposed to be Verizon Wireless’ version of the device by the way (the G3 was LG-VS985), and according to the screenshot down below, the phone will feature a 3K display, 2880 x 1620 in resolution, which is just crazy. As a reminder, the LG H810 was spotted a couple of days ago, which is believed to be the AT&T model, and that device is featuring the same 2K panel as its predecessor. Is it possible that there will be two completely different G3 models?

Take all of this with a pinch of salt though, 2K seemed like an overkill when the G3 launched, and I still believe it is, so this 3K display seems really fishy. I’m sure that we’ll see a ton more rumors and reports in the coming weeks, but this sure sounds interesting. I really doubt that LG will do something like this, doesn’t make much sense to me, but who knows. Speaking of which, what is your opinion on all this, do you think this 3K business is actually real? What specs would you like the G4 to sport in the end? Let us know what you think in the comments, we’d love to hear from you, as always.

Jolla’s Sailfish-Powered Tablet Returns To Indiegogo With Bumped Up Storage

Jolla Tablet (2nd-gen) Indiegogo_3

There are quite a few of mobile OS’ available out in the market at the moment. Android, iOS and Windows Phone are definitely the best-known ones, but BlackBerry’s BB OS and Jolla’s Sailfish OS are also good examples of solid mobile OS’. As the title suggests, we’re here to talk about the latter, not the OS per se, but a device running that OS. You’ve probably already heard of Jolla’s smartphone, and even perhaps their first tablet offering running Sailfish OS, a different approach to using your smart device, that’s for sure. Well, this Finnish smartphone manufacturer intends to manufacture a follow-up to their tablet.

Jolla has opened up a campaign on Indiegogo and is trying to raise funds in order to release their 2nd-gen Jolla Tablet. In case you’re interested, read on. This thing will once again sport a 7.9-inch display, though this time around it will have 64GB of storage, compared to the 32GB that the first-gen tablet featured. A slightly more powerful battery will be included in here as well, a 4,450mAh unit (previous iteration had a 4,300mAh battery), and the tablet will also support microSD card expansion up to 128GB. There is one problem with the microSD card support though: “Due to Microsoft’s licensing limitation, cards over 32GB that are formatted in Jolla Tablet will not be readable by Windows computers or devices that advertise microSDXC support (cameras/phones/tablets)”, which is quite unfortunate.

If you intend to support this project, just follow the source link down below. Crowdsourcing backers can get the 64GB of this thing for $250, which is only $30 more than what you’d pay for the 32GB version. Once the tablet hits the market it will cost around $300 according to Jolla, so backing the company via Indiegogo might be the best way to get your hands on that tablet, if you’re interested of course. Oh, and by the way, Jolla does offer some bundling options for the tablet and a phone, in case you’d like to know more, just follow the source link down below, you’ll find all the necessary information there.
