Don’t Miss These Android Stories: March 18, 2016

This week at DL, we began the Bracket Challenge for 2016, which is probably our most favorite time of year. If you entered, how’s your bracket looking so far? With the latest Michigan St. upset, we have seen a ton of brackets busted. However, we were not watching college basketball games all week, we promise.

Beyond basketball, we posted up our complete Galaxy S7 review (Galaxy S7 Edge review coming soon), went hands-on with the Nextbit Robin, went super deep with the LG G5 hands-on, and played more with the Android N Developer Preview.

It was a very busy week. If you missed any of the action, catch up below.

Have a great weekend, folks!

Unlocked LG G5 on B&H Photo Should Work on GSM and CDMA Networks (Verizon Included)

B&H Photo is now listing the LG G5 on its website, available for purchase starting April 1. However, this isn’t an ordinary carrier-specific variant. Instead, this unlocked model, according to the product listing, features LTE bands that would make it compatible with all of the top US carriers, including Verizon.

Usually, consumers only see this much carrier compatibility from Nexus or similar devices, so seeing LG embrace this type of functionality, which is known to be extremely beneficial for buyers, is a great thing.

As listed on B&H, this G5 features LTE bands 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 12, 13, 17, 20, and 25. To work on Verizon, you need 2, 4, and 13. For AT&T, you need 2, 4, 12, and 17. With that said, this G5 appears to have them all, meaning that buyers, in theory, should easily be able to jump from carrier to carrier, just as long as they already have active SIM cards with whichever carrier they prefer. As for CDMA (CDMA2000) bands, everything needed for US carriers is listed.

On Verizon, buyers will need to hope that LG sought certification from Big Red to allow for easy activation. If not, you may come across an issue that usually only affects Nexus buyers. But don’t worry, there’s always work-arounds. If you only intend to use the G5 on one specific carrier, such as Verizon, we suggest purchasing the device directly from Verizon.

Pricing of this unlocked model is not yet available, but once it is, we will update you.

Cheers Eric!

T-Mobile Unboxes LG G5 in “Probably World’s Fastest Unboxing”

T-Mobile is at it again, unboxing yet another device in extreme fashion. Last time, T-Mobile’s Des Smith unboxed the Galaxy S7 underwater, but now, the company looks to be raising the bar with “probably the world’s fastest unboxing” of the LG G5.

By world’s fastest, T-Mobile doesn’t mean video duration, but the speed at which Des travels while performing the action of unboxing the device. As you will see, Des is being whipped around in a Subaru rally car, taking tight turns through the dirt and mud. Naturally, unboxing a smartphone during this process probably isn’t the easiest thing to achieve, but Des finds a way.

As you might have already seen, T-Mobile is set to begin online orders for the LG G5 on March 29, two days ahead of the national launch on April 1.

We here at DL tend to do unboxing videos in a more tame environment, so check out our hands-on below T-Mobile’s video.

Test Your Basketball Skills With Facebook Messenger’s Latest Easter Egg Game

In time for March Madness (how’s your bracket looking?), Facebook has built in a basketball easter egg game for users of Messenger. When activated, a mini shooting game pops up, testing your finger flicking skills against your friend.

To start the game up, insert a basketball emoji into the chat. Then, tap on the basketball. Once your turn is over (you miss a shot), it’s your friend’s turn to see if they can best you on the court. You can continue to keep playing however much you would like.

The best I can do at this time is 15, and once you get past 10 made shots in a row, the basket starts moving left to right, making the game more challenging.

Make sure you are running the latest build of Messenger, then go challenge your friends.

Label Your Places in Google Maps With Cute Little Icons

Thanks to an update for Google Maps, users can begin to customize their places with little icons, such as log cabins for your home, or a towering skyscraper for your work. Once a place has been customized, you will see these icons appear on your map whenever you open the Google Maps application.

To get started on this process, you will need to have the latest version of Google Maps from Google Play. Once you have the update, open up the app, slide out the side menu on the left, click on Your Places, and get to choosing your icons.

Currently, there are many icons to choose from, but your Home and Work are not the only places you can customize. Users can set the Gym as a place, your kid’s school, or any other important place that you find yourself visiting often. By doing this, you allow Google to help you get to places quicker, with updated traffic info viewable directly in Google Now.

This change is rolling out to Google Play now, so be on the lookout for the update.

His steady leadership since Lenovo’s acquisition is appreciated and Lenovo wishes him continued success in the future. The Motorola Mobility teams that currently report to Osterloh will now report under de Lencquesaing, who will become Chairman and President of Motorola.

The changes to Lenovo’s leadership structure are effective April 1, 2016.
