Ingress ready to take over the wrist via Android Wear

ingress_android_wear_support

Ingress, an augmented reality game produced by Niantic Labs, a company within Google, has announced support for Android Wear will be released next month. Users with smartwatches running the Android Wear system will have access to quickly see the locations of friendly and enemy portals on their device’s screen. Players will also be able to take actions to either defend or capture those portals as appropriate using the smartwatch interface.

Ingress combines GPS data with gaming information provided by the platform to create a virtual reality that overlays the physical world. Where most people may see a statute or a fountain, using the Ingress gaming app players are able to determine that those locations are also portals in the game. The idea behind the Niantic Labs experiment was to get game players off their couches and out into the real world. This not only helps combat the sedentary nature of gaming, it has created a nice avenue for game players to socialize with fellow teammates face-to-face.

The down side is that the game requires users to have their smartphones out and their focus on the screen. This may not be as bad as someone walking down the street engrossed in their social media app, but it does take some focus away from users taking in the real world. By using the smartwatch as a point for interaction, Ingress may reduce the need to focus on a smartphone screen so heavily.

Both gaming companies and smartwatch manufacturers will be watching to see how Ingress is able to capitalize on the form factor. Thus far, gaming has not made much of an inroad onto the wearable platforms that are available. Part of that is because the market has not yet figured out how best to utilize the form factor.

VLC for Android gets Android TV support, Chromecast still pending

VLC player android

Fans of the VLC media player on Android have been waiting for the app to incorporate support for streaming to Chromecast devices for some time now. Interest ratcheted up earlier this month when some changes in the VLC source code for the upcoming version 3.0 release indicated support for Chromecast was present. VideoLabs has released an update for the app, but it is still not the one everyone was hoping for that would include the casting capability. The good news is that it does include support for Android TV.

According to the apps notes in the Google Play Store, the Android TV support includes the ability to do an audio search using your mobile device. The app also includes a connector so the app can recognize when an Android TV device has completed booting and then send recommendations to the Android TV launcher screen.

While the addition of the Android TV support is nice, this still does not guarantee Android devices will be the first to get casting support for VLC. The iOS or desktop versions of VLC are in the running as well. If you want to grab VLC, hit one of the download links below to see if you can install it on your device.

Qualcomm Releasing LTE-U Enabled Mobile Chipsets

Qualcomm-Logo-AH-1

Unlicensed LTE spectrum, known as LTE-U, is a technology that allows carriers to extend their mobile network coverage by using spectrum in frequencies for which there is no operating license. This currently and typically means using the 5 GHz frequency point, which is currently relatively quiet but shared with some 802.11 WiFi hotspots. Because this frequency point is unlicensed, it is available to any and everybody wishing to broadcast and the reason why WiFi routers (and associated radios in devices) operate at this frequency is because it is relatively uncluttered. As it happens, the 5 GHz frequency is particularly suited to high speed unlicensed networking because the higher the frequency, the greater the potential transfer speed but also the shorter the range of the transmitter. Carriers should not simply rely on unlicensed spectrum but instead will be pairing up unlicensed spectrum with their existing network to provide aggregated coverage.

In the mobile device industry, there is massive potential for unlicensed 5 GHz LTE coverage to provide additional capacity in places of high congestion. As you might understand, companies interested in WiFi technologies have raised concerns about carriers using this spectrum to crowd out wireless access points and there has been much work on keeping things fair. This is good for the industry because if left unchecked, it’s possible that the highest powered transmitter will effectively block out other transmitters in a localized area and this is detrimental for most customers! There are a number of technologies currently being deployed or tested including an adaptive duty-cycle (to promote coexistence within the same spectrum) and Listen Before Talk techniques, which are being considered for a revised LTE standard.

Qualcomm have today announced that they are integrating LTE-U into their mobile chipsets following successful trials. These trials included testing the technology in an environment saturated with LTE-U and WiFi access points at the 5 GHz frequency. Qualcomm’s data “concluded that LTE-U can not only provide superior performance than either LTE or Wi-Fi used individually, but fairly coexists with Wi-Fi. In many cases, shifting traffic from Wi-Fi to LTE-U can actually improve performance for Wi-Fi users…” The LTE-U technology will be integrated into the FSM99xx models, available from the second half of the year. FSM99xx will include 3G, 4G LTE, up to 802.11ac WiFi and of course LTE-U. Qualcomm has also announced the first commercially available LTE-U modem unit, the FTR8950; this will be available for commercial sampling in the second half of the year.

These chipsets will be demonstrated at next week’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain and we’ll be there to take a look!
