Meizu M1 Gets Unboxed In China, Check Out Meizu’s Affordable Handset

Meizu M1 China unboxing_1

It was a big day for Meizu yesterday. This China-based smartphone manufacturer has held an event in Beijing and has announced a bunch of smart gadgets along with a smartphone that stole the spotlight at the event, the Meizu M1. This handset has rumored for a long time and the company finally launched it for an incredible price of 699 Yuan ($110). It’s hard to beat that pricing, and this is definitely Meizu’s way to compete with Xiaomi and their Redmi 2 handset which was launched earlier this month.

That being said, we’ve already covered the launch of the handset itself at length, but new content keeps on coming. The first unboxing of the M1 has surfaced in China and it seems appropriate to cover that as well. If you take a look at the gallery down below you’ll see a bunch of unboxing images which will definitely give you an even better look at the device, considering all we had thus far were press images of all sorts. This handset looks basically identical to the Meizu M1 Note, but it is smaller and its internals are significantly different than those of its bigger brother.

Meizu M1 features a 5-inch 720p (1280 x 768) display along with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage (expandable via microSD card up to 128GB). This thing is powered by MediaTek’s MT6732 quad-core processor clocked at 1.5GHz and it ships with a 2,610mAh battery on the inside. 13-megapixel snapper is located on the back of this thing along with an LED flash, and a 5-megapixel shooter is available up front for all your selfie and video call needs. The M1 comes with Android 4.4 KitKat pre-installed and Flyme 4.2 UI on top of it, the newest version of Meizu’s very own Android skin.

This thing comes with 4G LTE support (Chinese bands) and will be available in White, Blue, Yellow, Green, Pink-Purple and Turquoise color options. Meizu M1 pre-orders will kick off on February 5 in China. The unboxing images are down below, as I already mentioned, make sure to let us know if you intend to purchase one of these smartphones.

Rolling Stone Magazine is Coming to the Google Play Store

rolling-stone_Jay-Z

Rolling Stone magazine has been a cultural force for years, but only last year did the company realize that online mobile distribution can be a potential money-maker. That’s why Rolling Stone will now be available on the Google Play Newsstand. The magazine will feature some archive articles for free, but you will have to pay to see more.

One of the justifications for taking advantage of the Google Newsstand is the massive growth the Android operating system has seen the past few years and the increased amount of money being spent on the store. Google is also notorious for treating content providers fairly and beneficially for both parties, which is why The Rolling Stone will be working with Google.

Are you a Rolling Stone reader? If so, what to you think about its arrival on the Google Play Store Newsstand? Leave a comment below and let us know what you’re thinking.

Samsung’s Q4 profits continue to slide, but still land above analyst expectations

Samsung_Galaxy_S_5_Back_Camera_Samsung_Logo_TA_02 Samsung posted some good news and some bad news today. The bad news for the company is that their fourth quarter profits for 2014 dropped 27%, which is a fairly significant slide for the holiday months. The bright side, however, is that this drop was smaller than what analysts were expecting.

A big reason that Samsung didn’t have a bigger decrease was thanks to their component business, which is still doing exceptionally well thanks to the general popularity of smartphones and tablets. Sales of the Galaxy Note 4 also increased during Q4, so it held its own against other flagship devices and Apple for Christmas. Total sales for Samsung ended up between 72 and 75 million smartphones, while Apple shipped about 74 million. Those numbers make it pretty clear that 2014 was kinder to Apple than it was to Samsung.

For the quarter, Samsung still managed to pull in about $4.9 billion, and compared to previous quarters, Samsung’s numbers are decreasing slower than they were towards the end of 2014. Samsung has an opportunity with the Galaxy S 6 to finally turn things around and stay competitive at the high end against Apple, but they’ll need a strong 2015 to make that happen.

Federal Communications Commission Says Blocking Personal Wi-Fi Hotspots Is Illegal (Cough, Cough, Marriott)

2015-01-28 08.50.48 If you're a hotel manager, especially at a big, fancy hotel where people can expect to pay a convenience fee for running water, you might be tempted to charge an iniquitous amount of money for your guests to access the Internet. Your guests, in turn, might tell you to suck it and use the Wi-Fi hotspot feature built into just about every new smartphone being sold today. That might make you turn around and consider doing something drastic, like, say, implement an elaborate system of jammers to block or spoof signals and make personal Wi-Fi devices useless.

HTC to try out Xiaomi’s marketing methods

htc_desire_816_colors

HTC has a large user base in Taiwan where its products are sold the most. However, the company’s online presence has been rather iffy. But a new report suggests that the company is looking to change that with its two new midrange devices – the Desire 816G and the 512G.

The company will reportedly take a cue from Xiaomi’s books and have a 24 hour online store which will sell these two devices. This online store will go live on the 4th of February in the region and will probably be limited to Taiwan for the time being.

This being said, the company will still rely on its carrier partners and other third party retailers to sell its devices in the country. It is expected that HTC’s online sales in Taiwan will only come close to 10% of the total revenues made, so third party sellers and carriers still have a big part to play in HTC’s financial plans.

Latest Report Highlights Games And Apps ‘Most Downloaded’ Are Not ‘Most Revenue’ Generating

Android-Apps-AH-1

We have already heard this morning the main findings of App Annie’s retrospective look back of 2014. For those that missed our earlier report, the overall findings suggest sub-industries such as the ‘sharing economy’, messaging and ‘super casual games’ saw the biggest growth in 2014 and are likely to continue in 2015. Those were the overall main headlines, but to look in to what actually did well, individually, we have to delve into the rankings. These rankings consist of overall scores across both the android (Google Play) and iOS (Apple).

In terms of worldwide ranks, we see some a lot of familiar faces making the top 10’s in 2014. In terms of games, the number one downloaded game was Candy Crush Saga. This was followed by Subway Surfaces, My Talking Tom, Farm Heroes Saga (same makers as Candy Crush) and one of the new entries, Clash Of Clans. You will notice a lot of these titles revolve around the same type of game content, clearly indicating the popularity of these sorts of games, over the last twelve months. Likewise, the top non-game Apps of 2014, followed a similar homogenous pattern. In at number one was Facebook Messenger. Probably not surprising this made the number one spot in terms of downloads, as this was only released in 2014 and instantly had Facebook’s entire userbase to hit the download button. Following on from Facebook Messenger though, was actually Facebook. This was then further followed on by WhatsApp Messenger (starting to notice a trend?). Coming in fourth and fifth place was Instagram and Skype respectively. So there can be no doubt that in the non-game sphere, social media apps were the biggest apps by download.

That said, downloads do not equate to revenue and that certainly seems to be the case when you look at the actual top apps and games of 2014 by revenue. On the game front, the number one game by revenue, was actually Clash of Clans. Which if you remember came in fifth, in terms of ‘number of downloads’. This was followed in second place by Puzzle and Dragons, which actually did not make it into the top 10 of download numbers at all. The most downloaded game (Candy Crush Saga) comes in at third place, in terms of revenue and is followed up the rear by Monster Strike and Game of War – Fire Age in fourth and fifth place, respectively. Likewise, the non-game apps seem to show a similar trend with only one of the top five ‘top downloaded’ apps, making the top 5 revenue-generating apps. Ironically, it was also fifth in both lists, with Skype being the fifth top app for revenue. Edging past Skype into fourth place was dating app, Zoosh. This was then beaten to third by LINE Play. For those who have yet to encounter, is an avatar social media based app which can be linked to your LINE, Facebook or Twitter accounts. Beating LINE Play to second place was Pandora Radio and taking the very top spot for non-game apps by revenue, was LINE. As you have by now probably guessed, this is the main app to which you can link your LINE Play (the third highest revenue app) to.

As such, LINE seem to have done extremely well in 2014 with their range of LINE apps. In fact, for informational purposes, LINE also had the seventh app in terms of revenue for their LINE Manga app. With three in the top 10, LINE were by far the standout publisher, taking the number one Publisher spot for revenue. They also managed to get one of their games (Disney Tsum Tsum) in the top 10 revenue games (number eight). The success of LINE does highlight the interesting correlation between downloads and revenue. While we consistently hear of how many downloads certain apps achieve, it seems that does not always equate to a successful revenue app. LINE were the number one publisher for non-game revenue, had three apps in the top 10 non-game list and one in the top 10 game list. Yet, none of their apps made it on to either the game or non-game top 10 downloaded lists. Interesting!

2015 will be the ‘Year of Samsung’ according to one Jefferies analyst

Samsung_Galaxy_S_5_Sport_Back_Samsung_Logo_TA

With all the doom and gloom we have been hearing about Samsung, it’s time for a little good news. Jefferies & Co.’s Sundeep Bajiker is saying that this will be the “Year of Samsung” and it’s time to buy more shares.

He also says they will provide “The High-End Cure for Xiaomi,” who has taken a huge chunk out of Samsung’s share in China. Speaking of China, yesterday’s numbers show Apple as being an even bigger threat, but Bajikar thinks Samsung is a better investment than Apple.

Bajiker believes that Samsung has the edge with flexible displays and their own Exynos processor with 14nm technology. Both of these features will elevate the high end offering. However, the middle of the road is where the real competition is at present and the use of metal will help Samsung, which is something Xiaomi won’t be able to match.

I just don’t think flexible displays will be enough to boost Samsung, at least in the short term. Consumers don’t seem to care too much about it, and as to Exynos processors, mainstream consumers also don’t seem to care about that either. Of course the move to Exynos processors will help Samsung’s profitability, but not market share. Profitability might be more important to investors, but they do look at market share growth as well.

Bajiker has a hold rating on Apple, which seems crazy when you consider the numbers they showed last quarter. That was all because they finally launched larger iPhones, which brought record sales. Now the question is what can Apple do for an encore? It’s going to come down to innovation because going larger isn’t going to do it anymore. They already used up that card. Is flexible displays that “innovation?” If it is, Samsung seems to have the edge. No pun intended.

Apple’s insane earnings already breaks record with Apple Watch vs Android Wear battle looming

AppleStore_Shinsaibashi,_Osaka

We ridiculed Apple for finally breaking out of their shell and delivering the types of devices people have wanted, but as much fun as that was there’s no doubt it did good things for them as a company. Confirmation of that fact arrived ahead of today’s stock market opening as Apple has reported record-breaking revenue and sales numbers. And when we say record-breaking, we mean there’s possibly no other company that could sell this many smartphones in one quarter.

Apple reported a ridiculous $74.6 billion in revenue for their fiscal Q1 2015, an increase of 30% year-over-year, thanks to the sale of 21.4 million iPad tablets, 5.5 million Mac computers and — you may want to sit down for this — 74.5 million iPhone devices. Most companies would be ecstatic to make that over the course of a year or two, so for Apple to rake all that in within just one quarter speaks volumes about the company’s new direction.

To put that all into perspective, Apple’s big quarter joins an exclusive list of the top 5 quarterly results of all time. The other four? Oil companies. Just think about that for a second. There is no bigger business than oil, and Apple — a consumer electronics company — has found its way into that territory. In fact, Apple now owns the honor of having the biggest quarter ever in the history of business.

Shareholders in Apple’s camp are sure to be waking up quite happy this morning. The stock sits at $117.82 per share — a jump of nearly 8% — as of the time of this writing, and there’s a chance it could grow even more as the day moves on. That’s the highest Apple’s stock has been since the months immediately following the launches of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus (it peaked at around $119 on November 26th, 2014).

apple stock snapshot

It has to be a frightening sight for other smartphone manufacturers, especially in a time where the top companies not named Apple are already struggling to maintain solid footing.

Samsung is the one that stands to lose the most out of them all as they’re atop the totem pole in most parts of the world. The South Korean company, which once soared to new heights on the back of a highly competitive anti-iPhone ad campaign, now has to watch on as the company they halfway owe their growth in the mobile realm to could just as easily dismantle them.

g-watch-r-wrist

And if all of that isn’t enough, Apple hasn’t even set foot into the smart watch arena yet. The company reaffirmed plans to make that happen this April with its first consumer launch — the Apple Watch — and it’s only then that we’ll be able to see the impact they will have on one of the most exciting new wearable product categories to spawn in the past few years.

In the meantime, Apple is expecting things to calm down in the next quarter as holiday promotions and advertising wind down and as demand decreases. They’re still expecting revenue between $52 and $55 billion, so their idea of a “down quarter” isn’t quite the same as everyone else’s.

Samsung? Sony? HTC? Moto? The balls are in your courts to respond with the sort of innovation to make sure Apple’s renaissance has more of a temporary effect than a lasting one.
