Don’t Miss These Android Stories: August 21, 2015

It was a great week, filled with new Samsung phones, topped off by Nexus leaks, multiple Moto 360 (2015) sightings, and Android 6.0 news! Earlier this week, Google made Android 6.0 aka “Marshmallow” official, likely to be made available on the two upcoming Nexus devices from LG and Huawei.

And speaking of Huawei and LG Nexus devices, thanks to a few leaks and 3rd-party render releases, we got our best look yet at what might to expect from Google in the later part of this year. As for the Moto 360 (2015), it was spotted on the streets of Chicago, looking just as fashionable as ever.

If you missed any of the craziness, see all of the news below.

Big things happening in the Android world, folks!

Samsung’s Reported ‘Tahoe’ Tablet Features 18.4″ FHD Display, Exynos 7580 Processor

As first reported earlier this month, it appears early rumors claiming Samsung desired to make a massive tablet were true. Sources of SamMobile claim the tablet, codenamed Tahoe, is real, and features a gargantuan 18.4″ Full HD display.

Specs for the device, as told by the same source, are a 64-bit octa-core 1.6GHz Exynos 7580 processor, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of onboard storage, microSD slot with support for up to 128GB of storage, 8MP camera, 5,700 mAh battery, and is just 11.9mm thick.

Information regarding a possible release date and pricing is not known.

Now, keep in mind, a tablet of this size probably won’t be going with you on your morning bus or subway commute. Likely, it will be marketed to homes without a TV, making it the sole media consumption device. Plus, kids would love to play games on such a large display.

What would you do with a tablet of this size?

Turn on Your TV With Amazon Echo Thanks to Samsung SmartThings Support

The Amazon Echo continues to gain features, with the latest being support for SmartThings from Samsung. If you plan on picking up a Samsung SmartThings Hub off of Amazon (currently available through pre-order for $99), users can tell Alexa to, “Turn on the TV.” Or if you have a SmartPower Outlet, you can ask her to, “Turn on the lamp,” or porch light.

Samsung’s SmartThings devices are not the only options compatible, with Amazon listing out plenty of choices for your smart home, including the WeMo Switch, OSRAM lightbulbs, and many more.

Connecting the devices to Amazon Echo seems painless enough, as everything gets controlled from the Amazon Echo application. As for my Amazon Echo, I seem to only use it as a fancy kitchen timer these days, but that may change with this new functionality.

Do you have Alexa in your home?

Samsung’s ‘Ultimate Test Drive’ for iPhone Users Lets You Make the Switch for 30 Days

For those of us currently using an iPhone, but were thinking about trying out one of the new devices from Samsung, the company has kicked off the Ultimate Test Drive event. For 30 days, you can try out a Galaxy S6 Edge, Galaxy S6 Edge+, or Galaxy Note 5, all for the price of a single dollar and zero obligation to buy.

To sign up, you will need to have you iPhone handy, plus a credit card for the $1 charge. Once you are registered, a Samsung rep will send out your choice of device, giving you 30 days to try it out however you see fit. If you are not happy, simply send the phone back with the prepaid label. If you love it, keep the phone and Samsung will charge your credit card.

New to Android? Don’t worry, Samsung has written a spiffy guide that goes along with your phone to help you get the most out of your experience, just to be sure you don’t miss any exciting features.

After peeking through the Terms and Conditions, it might be a good idea to try out the Test Drive, return the device, then buy one through another means if you enjoy it. Samsung looks to be charging $820 for the Galaxy S6 Edge if it is not returned. That’s quite a premium compared to how much you can find it for online.

If you do own an iPhone, do any of these new Samsung devices at least make you curious about trying them out?

Moto 360 (2015) Spotted in the Wild Multiple Times

According to one user on reddit and one on Google+, the Moto 360 (2015) is out in the wild in the city of Chicago, the hometown of Motorola’s US headquarters. It appears two versions of the watch have been spotted, one an all-black model with Black leather straps, and another with a Cognac band and Rose Gold casing.

Neither person who spotted these devices decided it would be a good idea to talk to the wearers, but given the lugs seen on the device, and the power button placed in the 2 o’clock position, they knew they should start snapping PI-like photos to share on the web. As we can see in the photos, the black bar (aka flat tire) is still present, likely storing the same ambient light sensor as last year.

Other than that, these photos match up nicely against all of the previous leaks we have seen for the device.

We still don’t exactly know when Motorola plans to announce new Moto 360, but with employees walking around Chicago with it, we must be close.
