ZTE To Launch Three New Nubia-Branded Devices In 2015

ZTE is one of the biggest Chinese smartphone manufacturers nowadays. This company has been around for quite some time now, is selling their products all over the world and is in possession of a lot of patents, similar to Huawei actually. Many people think there’s still room for improvement for ZTE and are expecting the company to release something truly compelling this year. As a reminder, ZTE has recently released a very solid mid-ranger, the Blade S6, which is very affordable and available internationally. It seems like that device was very well accepted, at least based on the initial reactions by the community.


The company’s exec got interviewed recently, and has revealed what can we expect from ZTE going forward, at least to come extent. ZTE is doing business all over the world, they’re selling their devices throughout Asia and Europe, and the company plans to expand to North America, Latin America and the remaining parts of Asia in 2015. ZTE is growing its business, not as fast as some other companies, but this China-based smartphone vendor is moving forward as far as marketshare goes.


Expanding to other countries is a priority for ZTE, but expansion in their home country is also one of the main goals for the company. We all know how fierce the competition is in China at the moment, it’s hard to gain marketshare next to companies like Xiaomi, Meizu and Huawei, but ZTE is very optimistic going forward. According to the interviewed Mr. Kun, ZTE will launch three Nubia-branded Android-powered smartphones in 2015. He also mentioned that the company will launch at least one of those smartphones by the end of March, so I guess that it’s possible ZTE plans to launch something at MWC (Mobile World Congress) in Barcelona, or soon after that.


ZTE’s Nubia Z9 handset has leaked several times now, and according to those leaks the device will sport no bezels on the side. We still don’t know how legit those leaks are, but this is one of the most anticipated devices by ZTE this year. Its predecessor, the Nubia Z7, was announced back in July last year, so I doubt ZTE will announce the Z9 in March, though it’s possible, of course.

US Cellular Moto X 2nd Gen gets Android 5.0.2 Update

Some of the new improvements include notifications improvements, Material Design, a convenient quick settings flashlight, and better multitasking. There is also another set of improvements in the area of profiles on your phone. You can now have multiple profiles on your device, and also have guest profiles on your phone. Microsoft OneDrive, in its first beta release, is showing off a totally revamped Material interface. It seems there are no feature additions from the latest stable version, so we're talking strictly cosmetic changes. But when comparing old to new, is that really such a bad thing?

This side-by-side might be the best argument for floating action buttons I have ever seen. The old version's controls on the bottom just seemed a very inefficient use of space and, overall, were just plain ugly.

HTTP/2 And HPACK Protocol Specs Formally Approved By The IETF

Just last week, Google announced plans to remove SPDY support from its open source Chromium project early next year, and it would be replaced by the not-yet-official HTTP/2 protocol. Today, the Internet Engineering Steering Group (IESG), the managing component of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), announced that the HTTP/2 and HPACK specs have been formally approved and are on the way to becoming official standards.


For those who may not already know, HTTP/2 (spec) is a network protocol generally used by web browsers for transferring the HTML, images, and other resources that make up web pages – but it is frequently used by countless other types of apps for communication, as well.

Lollipop soak test for 1st Generation Moto G starting to roll out

Moto_G_Back_TA While most other manufacturers are busy getting their flagship devices ready for Android Lollipop, Motorola is prepping its first generation Moto G for the update. Some users with the 8 GB, 3G-only Canadian model have been notified about the Android 5.0.2 upgrade, so while that’s being limited to a very small selection of devices, it does mean that a bigger rollout is on its way.


This soak test brings devices up to Android 5.0.2, skipping 5.0.1. The incremental update really only affected tablets, but at least you’ll be able to say you’ve got the latest and greatest on your Moto G when it hits. At least until Google takes the wraps off of Android 5.1, anyway.


Keep an eye out for this update over the next few weeks if you’re still using the original Moto G.

AH Tech Talk: Why Samsung Was Likely Interested In Purchasing LoopPay

Earlier Samsung had announced that they had purchased LoopPay, a technology for wireless payments to be made in retail stores at checkout registers using only your smartphone. Wireless payments have been around well before LoopPay with the MasterCard PayPass and later Google Wallet as well as SoftCard, but NFC mobile payments using your smartphone have really yet to take off although NFC based payment systems are available in some places. The majority of larger retail companies are likely going to be embedding ApplePay technology into their checkout registers in the future, which of course is incompatible with NFC based payment systems like SoftCard and Google Wallet. Samsung isn’t worried though, because now it has LoopPay, a mobile payment system built on a technology called MST.


Samsung is known for being a huge competitor to Apple and the iOS platform, and they’re no doubt wanting to take LoopPay and use it as a competitor to ApplePay. The reasons for Samsung having interest in LoopPay aren’t that hard to figure out either. With LoopPay already being accepted in some 10 million stores, it’s obviously secure enough of a solution that Samsung is seeing it as a way to provide consumers with a safe yet easy way to pay with mobile devices while also hoping it will draw in customer interest for their devices, especially if they begin to embed the technology into handsets and eliminate the need for the currently available external LoopPay equipment like the Fob, ChargeCard etc.


Aside from being a potential tool Samsung can use to compete against Apple’s own mobile payment system, Samsung also likely wanted LoopPay for its ease of use. In its current form, users don’t have to do much more than purchase a LoopPay device. After that the device talks to the installed app which holds your cards information. Another reason Samsung was likely interested in LoopPay? Security. Samsung is big on security and the app safely stores your card data where it can relay that information to the LoopPay device to pay at checkout POS systems. Going over those details, Samsung’s reasons for wanting LoopPay as part of their company should be a no brainer, it stands a great chance at being a competitor to ApplePay since it’s already widely accepted at many more retail stores than ApplePay. It also might give customers another reason to look in Samsung’s direction when the time comes to decide on a new device.

New CyanogenMod Theme Engine options allow users to customize status and nav bar colors separately

Being able to adjust even the smallest bits of the UI is one of the reasons Android fans turn to custom ROMs like CyanogenMod. Coming soon to CM12, developer Clark Scheff posted an updated Theme Engine screenshot showing new options to change both status and navigation bars independently from one another. While nothing groundbreaking, it’s yet another feather in the hat of an already full featured ROM brought to you by the boys ay Cyanogen Inc.


As for availability, Scheff mentions you should start seeing the new Theme Engine options arrive in February 19th nightly builds (and beyond), so be on the lookout. As for a little back story, Theme Engine had to be built from the ground up in order to play nice with Android Lollipop, only landing in CM12 nightlies about a month ago. Definitely ice to see further progress being made.

Motorola Moto 360 receiving minor 5.0.2 update

Google Docs for Android gets improved Office Compatibility Mode

Starting today, users of the Google Docs app will see an update arrive in the Play Store. The update benefits users of the Office Compatibility Mode and those who have be trying to insert links into documents.



The following was included in the changelog for the update:



  • Support for selecting, cutting, copying and pasting text along with images, tables, and charts in Office Compatibility Mode

  • Ability to insert links in Google documents


A slow, staged release track for the update is not the case here. Instead, Google has opted for a “rapid release.” That means all users should see the update within the next few days rather than weeks.

You can now open shared links in the mobile Dropbox app

As of today users of Dropbox on mobile devices will no be able to open files and folders of Dropbox shared links right in the app. Which means instead of being directed to a web page, you’ll be able to access previews of documents and photos or save files/folders to your Dropbox account all within the app.



If you’ve already saved the file, clicking the link will take you to that file or folder and you’ll be able to move, rename or favorite it. You’ll also be able to edit Microsoft Office docs right from their respective apps. At this point, it’s in a staged roll out so you should have it within the next few days.

Moto 360 now receiving Android Wear 5.0.2, here’s the official changelog

Just a quick heads up: Motorola is now pushing out a software update for the Motorola Moto 360. Going by the build number LWX49L, the update brings the software version number up to 5.0.2 and looks to be little more than bug fixes. Here’s the official changelog from Motorola:



Google Play – Updated Google Play services

Bug Fixes – A variety of system optimizations and security updates to improve performance and stability



Other than that, not much else. We expect a similar update to hit other Android Wear variants as well, so owners of the LG G Watch, LG G Watch R, Samsung Gear Live, ASUS ZenWatch, and others should be on the lookout.

New Moto360 update offers bug fixes and updated Play Services

For those of you with the Moto 360, you’ll be happy to know that Motorola has announced a new update for the Android Wear watch. While it doesn’t add to much in terms of excitement, it does add updated Google Play Services plus bug fixes and optimizations. According to Motorola you’re going to see it rolled out in phases over the next few days so your mileage may vary.


That said, you’ll be on the most current version of Android as soon as the update hits. When you get the update, you’ll need 80 percent battery life to install it. Let us know if you’re seeing the update.

Tips For Developers To Successfully Market Android Apps On Google Play

If you’re already a developer or you are thinking about publishing your first app to Google Play for the Android platform, making sure you market your application will be key if you want to ensure your best chance that the app will succeed. Marketing isn’t all there is to it of course, as creating a compelling app that people will like and want to engage with consistently is where you’ll want to start, but marketing is an important piece of the equation so people know that your app is out there and that it’s worth their time to give it a shot.


Stepping back a bit to the actual app building, it’s going to be that much more difficult to build a great app if you have no idea who your target market is going to be. So, doing some research and figuring out who your app is going to attempt to grab the attention of is probably one of the first things you may want to consider. Take into account what your targeted demographic is into and factor in that in this day and age people want things as fast as they can get them when it comes to content consumption through apps. As you continue researching to figure out how to make your app the best it can possibly be, you’ll gather a collective of important data that can give you a great launchpad for publishing a really polished end result.


Monetizing your Android app is another factor you’re going to want to decide on. They are many ways to monetize an application and in most cases almost every single app will have some form of a monetization in place so that as a developer, money can be made from the hard work. Depending on who your app is for, and possibly considering the monetization trends of the current time when you publish, you may find that a free, ad-supported app is best. Of course charging a few bucks for your app may be a better way to go since many users don’t particularly care for ads, and if you’re application is extremely captivating then more users are likely going to be willing to pay for it up front.


All of the above steps are great details to keep in mind but you can’t market your app correctly without a strong marketing plan to work off of. You may already have some great ideas on how to market your application, but it can’t hurt to give Google’s tips a look and see if some of them if not all of them can be worked in the plan you may already have in mind. Google suggests your marketing plan be set up in a structural format, as this will make it easier to follow, breaking things down into four separate categories of awareness, trial, purchase, and repeat. The last one may or may not be self explanatory, you want repeat users, and to foster this type of user base, you’ll want to provide updates as the landscape of apps will change over time and you should want yours to adapt along with the changes. Other things like loyalty programs to give something back to the users, notifications, and social integration are all ways to help with the repeat part of the process. To start though, people need to know your app exists, and this is why the awareness step is first.


You can make people aware of your app in a number of ways including PR, social media, mobile ads and video, and search, and of course you can always advertise it via the web, TV, and ATL. Once people know about your app getting it into their hands is an essential course to take. Starting things of with a trial or beta for free would be a great possible solution as you’ll want to grab user feedback. A trial of your app(if you’re planning on utilizing a pay model at launch)is a great way for users to become acquainted with it, and after you get some user feedback you can figure out if anything within needs to be tweaked or fixed. Once you feel your app is ready for the public and if you decide to publish it as a paid application, you’ll want to include details like bulk sales or discounts, something like special launch sale pricing. If you’re planning on publishing your app for free, upselling to a premium version with added features can be a great way to monetize the app, and also gives users a way to forego ads, which you could include in a free version. This would lead you back to the last step in your structural marketing plan which we talked about above, the repeat step. While this set of tips isn’t going to guarantee you app success, it’s a good set of guidelines to follow in attempting to execute your plan an seeing your app all the way through to completion, and finally getting it published.

Motorola CEO fires back at Jony Ive’s negative comments about Moto Maker, calls Apple’s prices ‘outrageous’

Android users have long enjoyed the benefits of an open mobile OS, one of those perks simply being choice. The ability to choose from a wide range of hardware and software UIs, just about everyone can agree that choice is good. Choice fosters healthy competition and it’s because of this choice that we’ve seen such rapid advancement of mobile technology in recent years. It’s the American way.


When Motorola introduced Motomaker back in 2013, just about everyone agreed it was a breath of fresh air, giving buyers the ability to customize a new smartphone with different colors and even materials like leather or wood backs. But you know who felt this was a poor decision? Apple’s “visionary” designer Jony Ive.


In a recent interview with The New Yorker , Ive was quoted as saying the choice offered in Moto Maker was more of a lazy move by Motorola who somehow didn’t fulfill their responsibility as a designer. The world must look mighty different looking down from his high horse. Here’s the quote:



“Their value proposition was ‘Make it whatever you want. You can choose whatever color you want.’ And I believe that’s abdicating your responsibility as a designer.”



Apparently, Ive feels a smartphone’s design is something sacred and shouldn’t be allowed to be tampered with in any capacity. Never mind the fact that Motorola built a gorgeous phone with premium build quality and that color customization was simply allowing consumers to put the final touches on their phone in the name of personalization. That’s like criticizing Honda for allowing you to choose your own color, rims, and trim. It’s downright silly.


Today, the BBC published an interview with Motorola CEO Rick Osterloh who fired back at Ive, criticizing Apple’s expensive pricing model. He further explained Motorola’s stance on Moto Maker and why they believe giving consumers some flexibility in the design was the way to go:



“Our belief is that the end user should be directly involved in the process of designing products… We believe the future is in offering similar experiences and great consumer choice at accessible prices… A great smartphone, and a great mobile internet experience, shouldn’t be an expensive luxury. It should be a simple choice for everyone.”

Samsung officially acquires mobile payment startup LoopPay

Google Is Launching AdWords For Android In Canada First With Other Regions To Follow

If you’re a current customer and user of Google AdWords, Google is making things easier for you to access and manage information related to your AdWords accounts on the go, as they have just announced today they’re bringing the AdWords experience to mobile via Android devices. The catch is that they’re only launching the app via the Canadian Play Store at this point in time with a mention that they will be launching the app in other countries soon after, which could mean days or it could mean weeks, and the latter is likely the case.


Even though you can’t get a hold of the app in the Play Store just yet though if you’re a U.S. resident or a reader from another country, the apk is available for download here so you can have it installed on your device prior to the official launch of the app in other regions, whenever that happens to be. As Google states AdWords for Android will allow users to view campaign stats, update bids and budgets, receive alerts, and get support on the go from a dedicated employee at Google. AdWords for Android will be capable of managing stuff should you want to mostly use it instead of the desktop experience, keep in mind though Google is labeling this as a companion to the desktop experience for AdWords so it shouldn’t be though of as a complete replacement, rather a tool to help you stay on top of some or most things in regards to your account when you don’t have a desktop interface handy.


Since this is more of a companion, you have no ability to set up new AdWords accounts through the app, although we wouldn’t be surprised if Google added that functionality at some point in the future. For now, if you want to use it you have to be an existing customer of AdWords, which means signing for an account through the desktop. Rumors of Samsung launching their own mobile payments system have suddenly been confirmed. Well, for the most part. Instead of developing their own system, the South Korean company announced today that they’ve reached a deal to acquire contactless mobile payments company LoopPay. Competing with both Google Wallet and Apple Pay, LoopPay uses existing magnetic strip readers on pay terminals via Magnetic Secure Transmission (MST) — not NFC.

This ensures that, even if a retailer hasn’t yet upgraded their terminals to accept NFC-based payments, you can almost always pay using your smartphone with just a tap. Samsung EVP of Global Innovation Center David Eun had this to say about the deal:



“We are excited to take our relationship with LoopPay to the next level, by bringing consumers a mobile wallet solution that is not just safe and reliable, but also widely accepted at more locations than any competing service.”



A specific dollar amount wasn’t disclosed, but you can expect LoopPay’s technology — which currently requires a bulky case or key fob — to come bundled inside the upcoming Galaxy S6. LoopPay said in a statement on their site that although a wholly owned subsidiary of Samsung Electronics America, they’ll continue to operate as an independent team out of their Boston, Massachusetts headquarters. Could this be the ace up Samsung’s sleeve in competing with the iPhone?

AdWords-Thumb Google has launched a dedicated AdWords app into the Play Store, but it's not yet open to everyone. The company is kicking things off in Canada for the time being, where the app will remain exclusively available until further notice.


AdWords for Android allows users to view campaign stats, receive alerts, update bids, and manage budgets. Users can also place a call to a Google support person. The app serves as a companion to the desktop experience, but it comes with enough to keep a handle on things.
