Samsung Galaxy J1 Available In The Netherlands And Germany

Samsung Galaxy J1_2

Samsung’s flagship device, the Galaxy S6, has captured the media’s attention over the last week and it’s easy to understand why. The S6 features a brand new, state-of-the-art mobile processor, a new high performance memory storage, a 5.1-inch QHD AMOLED screen and a beautiful design. However, it’s the devices that Samsung are offering at the opposite end of the range that might have a more meaningful impact on the business. This is because whilst the Galaxy S6 has captured the imagination of many people, it’s going to be expensive. The high cost of the device will put it out of the reach of many customers, who will instead look for a somewhat more affordable device. Samsung needs to craft its lower and mid-range devices to capture some of the essence of the high end device, whilst maintaining that distinctive Samsung look and feel. And earlier this year we saw the Samsung Galaxy J1 announced in the Asia Pacific markets first before.

The Samsung Galaxy J1 is based around a dual core, ARM Cortex-A7 processor clocked at 1.2 GHz and backed up by 512 MB of memory. This processor is not a Samsung device but instead is built by Speadtrum. There’s a 480 by 800 pixel, 4.3-inch display of the LCD variety that carries Samsung’s strong color saturation and also gives a respectable viewing angle. Around the back, there’s a rear mounted 5MP camera, which supports 720p video recording. For selfies, customers will find a front facing 2MP unit. There’s 4 GB of internal storage plus a MicroSD card, onboard GPS and FM Radio. Power is provided by a 1,850 mAh battery with a claimed ten hours of talk time. The J1 is built from plastic but it’s a matte kind, which feels better to handle compared with the shiny plastics we’ve seen other Samsung devices finished in. The J1 also runs Samsung’s TouchWiz interface over Android 4.4.4 KitKat, but the version of TouchWiz is reported to be a less capable version than the version found on the higher end devices, which is a sensible way of keeping device performance up and lags or delays down.

Now the Galaxy J1 is arriving in Europe, reaching the Netherlands and Germany first and is available for pre-ordering at €120 and €135 respectively. As you can see, the hardware is very much low end but so too is the price tag. We also know that Samsung have announced a more powerful J1 device equipped with 4G LTE, which isn’t available yet, so it remains to see if the different version will be more expensive than the entry-level J1. The reason why this device is potentially very important is that customers drawn in by the Galaxy S6, or perhaps even using one who like it, may be tempted to pick one up for friends, relatives and loved ones. What do you think of the Galaxy J1? Do you think it offers reasonable value for money? Let us know in the comments below.
