“Finally”. The words that all LG G3 users on Verizon just said. Today, Verizon has published the update documents for the Lollipop update to the LG G3. Which means the update is coming, real soon. Likely within the next few days. LG has been slowly rolling out the update to their LG G3 models over the past month, with AT&T being first followed by Sprint and T-Mobile rolled it out just a couple weeks ago. Making Verizon the last of the major carriers to roll out Lollipop to the LG G3.
The Lollipop update will add some new features, but the overall look or UI of the device won’t change much at all, and that’s due to LG’s skin that they have on their devices. However, you will get some handy features like a new lock-screen with notifications on the lock screen. You’ll also get smart unlock. Which allows you to keep your device unlocked when in a certain area, connected to a certain Bluetooth device and much more. It’s a really great feature and something I use quite a bit. You’ll also see some new navigation buttons. They are really similar to what Google has on the Nexus line, but they look a bit bigger, and not as bold. Many compare it to the PlayStation buttons.
The update has actually been available through Verizon’s desktop Software Update Assistant. But those types of programs are always full of bugs and headaches. So it’s likely a better idea to wait for the OTA. Head on into the update menu (Settings > About Phone > System Updates > Check for Updates) to see if you’ve gotten the update yet. It’s likely going to be a rather large update, so make sure you’re on WiFi before downloading, unless you have unlimited data still.
With the LG G4 right around the corner, it’s nice to see that LG hasn’t forgotten their older devices, like the LG G3, which is approaching it’s 1-year birthday really soon. The LG G3 was the very first QHD device that was available around the world. So it was and still is a pretty important device, especially to LG.
