There are already rumors that the Galaxy Note 5 will sport a 4K display, and even if it doesn’t, it won’t stop 4K displays from landing on your next smartphone.
Sharp just announced their own 4K (3,840 x 2,160) 5.5-inch IGZO display that sports a stunning 806 pixels per inch. This one won’t appear on a smartphone until 2016 since production isn’t scheduled until then.
Now of course, the first thought that comes to mind is that this is all overkill, but think about when you split apps on the screen. The smaller app windows, will show upwards of 1080p making them more clearer. Think about scrolling through your Twitter or Facebook timeline where the photos are much smaller, but will have much more pop.
The only real downside to a display like this is battery life and since we keep pushing the envelope, it’s getting tougher and tougher to push the envelope on battery life. So we go through the same thing each year in which we really don’t enjoy any better battery life over last year’s models. Hopefully battery technology will start to evolve quicker so we can get ourselves to a point in which we never have to worry about charging our devices more than once a day, but that might be wishful thinking.
Does a 4K display on a mobile phone excite you in the least bit? It’s hard to imagine that most people will probably enjoy 4K on their smartphone before they do on their TV.
