Sharp Unveiled A 5.5-Inch 4K (3840 x 2160) IGZO Display With 806 PPI Pixel Density

If someone told you a couple of years ago that today’s smartphones will sport 2K displays, you’d probably laugh. Well, QuadHD / 2K displays are a reality now. We’ve seen quite a few smartphones sporting 2K displays, like the LG G3 and the Galaxy S6 / S6 Edge for example. Many people (and even some smartphone manufacturers) still think that QuadHD displays are an overkill when it comes to smartphones, but that doesn’t stop manufacturers from constantly including such panels in their handsets. I wonder what would those people say about 4K displays? Well, we’ll probably find out in the comments to this post and general reactions in the next couple of days, read on.

You’re probably somewhat confused by now, let me clear things up for you. A well-known Japan-based company, Sharp, has just released a 5.5-inch 4K IGZO display with a 806 PPI pixel density. We’re talking about a 3840 x 2160 resolution here, which is just insane considering the size of this thing. Sharp has even hinted that 8K (7680 x 4320) mobile displays might become a reality in a not-too-distant future as well, which makes this whole announcement even crazier. This isn’t so far-fetched though, considering that LG is already manufacturing an 8K panel, though that panel will be 27-inches big. Both LG, Sharp and Samsung should be capable to shrink down such a panel to 5.5-inches, 6-inches. Speaking of Samsung, that Korean-based tech giant is also said to be working on a 4K display for their Galaxy Note 5 phablet, though it remains to be seen how legit is that info.

There you have it folks, Sharp has released a 5.5-inch UltraHD 4K display and it’s just a matter of time before we see it in action in one of the upcoming smartphone. Sharp might even opt to release such a handset themselves in the near future, who knows. It will be interesting to see how much power do these displays consume, but OEMs will probably be forced to optimize content on smartphone displays nd do what LG did with their QuadHD panel at first, oversharpening the displayed content.
