Interestingly, 2015 is shaping up to be the year of curved displays. From LG’s release of the G Flex 2 at CES in January, Samsung’s release of the Galaxy S6 Edge in March, to the recently leaked Oppo R7, curved glass appears to be the latest craze among smartphone manufacturers. Adding fuel to the curved display fire is the ZTE Nubia Z9, which, based on leaked renders, appears to have curved glass akin to the Galaxy S6 Edge.
Whether or not the display of the Nubia Z9 is curved like the Galaxy S6 Edge is another story. However, the phone at least appears to have curved glass edges, known as 2.5D glass. The renders also suggest that the Nubia Z9 features a rounded metal frame and a glass back cover. If these renders prove to be accurate the Chinese manufacturer has put together a phone with high-quality materials and solid design, albeit a very similar design to Samsung’s Galaxy S6 Edge.
Adding substance to the premium look of the Nubia Z9 are a solid list of rumored high-end specifications, which include a QHD (2K) display and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 chipset paired with 3GB of RAM. While there is no official release date for the ZTE Nubia Z9 the Nubia Z9 Max and Z9 Mini were announced last month, which suggests it is coming soon. This was a sentiment which was also recently confirmed by ZTE’s General Manager. Whether or not ZTE plans to release its latest Nubia smartphones in the US though, remains to be seen. However, ZTE released the Grand S Pro in the US last year, releasing the Nubia Z9 in the US would fit within its strategy to expand sales in markets outside of Asia. Pricing details are obviously not currently known or available, but the already released Nubia Z9 Max comes in at $400 unlocked and the Nubia Z9 Mini at $240 (converted from Chinese prices). Considering these prices, the Nubia Z9 could range from $350 to $450. The Nubia Z9 already appears to be a very compelling smartphone and if priced at that price point, would definitely make it a formidable option in the market.
