T-Mobile has decided to discontinue the Sony Xperia Z3. That’s less than 6 months after it launched on the magenta carrier. However the interesting thing here is that the previous two Sony devices T-Mobile was selling are still up for sale. That includes the original Xperia Z and Xperia Z1s. Sony has been having trouble trying to make it in the US market for quite some time. However, putting their flagship phones on just on carrier, months after the rest of the world gets it, does not help them much. Verizon is still selling the Xperia Z3v variant if you want to buy that.
Sony Mobile US has always had issues with the US. And owning an Xperia Z3 and carrying one for the past few months, I’ve realized that most people don’t even know that Sony makes smartphones. That’s a huge issue for Sony. How can they expect to sell a bunch of smartphones and tablets when the general public – not us Android geeks – don’t know the phones exist? Sony makes some great phones, not to mention their cameras, but obviously they need to work on their marketing. Additionally, their roll out of Lollipop hasn’t been ideal, although they are at about the same pace as HTC, Samsung, Motorola and LG. So there’s not much to complain about there.
We’ve seen leaks of the Xperia Z3 successor, the Xperia Z4. And we thought we might see it at MWC back in March. But that was not the case. However, Sony has stated that they will be announcing the Xperia Z4 before September. Which makes it worth noting that IFA takes place in September, that’s normally where Sony announces their new flagship. So perhaps Sony is going to do it at Computex or at their own event. It’s still interesting to see T-Mobile stop selling the Xperia Z3, when two of Sony’s older devices are still up for sale on the carrier’s website. Which makes it hard to believe that this is due to the Xperia Z4 coming soon. Perhaps it’s just T-Mobile responding to the lack of demand for the Xperia Z3. We’ve reached out to T-Mobile for comment and will update as soon as we hear from them.
