Gionee is a China-based smartphone manufacturer best known for their Elife S5.1 smartphone which was the thinnest smartphone in the world back when it launched. It’s nowhere near that mark today, but it remains well-known because of it. Gionee has unveiled the Elife S7 handset last month during the Mobile World Congress (MWC), and that handset has recently been listed on Snapdeal’s website and will become available in China for Rs. 24,999 ($402). That being said, we’ve just received some interesting Gionee-related news, let’s see what’s what, shall we.

It seems like this Chinese smartphone OEM intends to open up shop in India soon, which makes sense, they’re selling quite a few devices in Indian market, they sell a lot of devices over there per year. According to Arving Vohra, Gionee’s India Chief Executive Offer and Managing director, the company will invest up to $48 million in the Indian manufacturing facility in the next three years. The company’s India CEO said that they’re currently trying to decide between two different locations and will make their decision in the next month or so. He has also added that the company will manufacture devices in India for other markets too, like Nigeria for example, an African country that was also mentioned by Mr. Vohra. Gionee intends to manufacture entry-level handsets in India at first, and will move towards higher-end devices as the time goes by.

As a side note, India is currently the second biggest market for Gionee, China is of course number one for the company, considering that’s their homeland and what not. Gionee has sold 4 million smartphones in India, which is a respectable number for sure. This China-based company also intends to unveil and launch the Elife E8 in India in June. All we know thus far is that this handset will sport a 20-megapixel camera on the back with OIS (Optical Image Stabilization) as part of the package. This makes all the sense in the world because the company’s E-series of smartphones are usually camera-centric. We’ll report back as soon as we get more information regarding Gionee’s plans in India.
