Samsung bringing Android to office printers, because they can

samsung_printers

In the early days of Android, the mobile operating system found itself at home on pretty much only one kind of device: the smartphone. Later the OS extended into the realm of tablets, and since then it has made its way onto televisions, cars, appliances, watches and the list goes on. Thanks to Samsung, you can now add one more contraption to the list — office printers. Yes, really.

During a special event at IFA, Samsung revealed its plans to sell 10 printer models to business and enterprise markets, which are reportedly the first Android-powered devices of their kind. Don’t worry, no Touchwiz here, instead the Smart MultiXpress printers will have the “Smart UX Center” UI running on top of Android.

Here’s what Samsung has to say about the new printers:

The new Samsung Smart MultiXpress series of MFPs each feature a 10.1-inch full touchscreen panel that enables users to search and print from web browsers, emails, maps, images and other types of content – without the need to connect to a PC or server. The touchscreen also offers the ability to preview documents, as well as editing and annotating capabilities.

While most of us will probably never run into one of these in the wild (at least anytime soon), it’s still cool to think about how far Android’s reach has gone over the last few years and we have to wonder — what’s next?
