While Samsung’s biggest Android announcements were made yesterday, it seems they were able to sneak one more in this morning during their IFA 2014 press briefing. Samsung has now formally announced the Galaxy Tab Active, a ruggedized 8-inch tablet that’s water-proof and is aimed primarily at enterprise users. Of course the tablet could also appeal to those simply looking for a device they can take anywhere, even the pool.

So what kind of hardware does this new rugged tablet pack? Here’s the rundown:

  • 1.2 GHz Quad-Core Processor

  • 8” WXGA(1280 x 800) TFT LCD

  • 1.5GB LPDDR3

  • 16GB internal memory, microSD expansion

  • 3.1MP Auto Focus (Rear) with Flash + 1.2MP (Front)

  • Connectivity: USB 2.0 High Speed , BT 4.0 BLE, WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n, NFC, GPS, GLONASS

  • Sensors: Accelerometer sensor, Light sensor

  • Dimensions: 126.2 x 213.1 x 9.75mm / 393g

  • Battery: 4,450 mAh removable

  • Android 4.4 KitKat

Samsung doesn’t clarify exactly what processor the device packs, other than it’s a quad-core, but judging by the 1.5GB RAM, this is clearly a mid-range device at best. Samsung notes that the tablet lasts about 10 hours and there’s even C-Pen support here as well. Aside from waterproofing, Samsung also claims the device can handle a 4-foot drop without skipping a bit, thanks to the device’s protective coating.

No word on pricing or availability on this one just yet, though we do know there will be both Wi-Fi only and LTE-equipped variants. What do you think of the Tab Active, like it or not?
