Lenovo unveils two new Android phones, the VIBE X2 and the VIBE Z2

Lenovo-Vibe-X2-2As well as designing powerful computers, great monitors and interesting laptops, Lenovo has taken some time to give Android fans some love. The popular PC manufacturer is announcing two smartphones, aside from the Lenovo TAB S8 we saw yesterday. These are the Lenovo VIBE X2 and VIBE Z2.

Both phones are interesting and quite unique in their own ways. The VIBE X2′s design and accessories focus mostly on fashion, while the 64-bit VIBE Z2 features a powerful “Selfie” camera.

Lenovo VIBE X2

The Lenovo VIBE X2 is the first “multi-layered” design on the market. The device has colored layers surrounding it, making it a very interesting phone to hold and look at. It is available in four colors: white, red, gold and dark grey.

The specs include a Mediatek MT6595 octa-core processor, a 5-inch 1080p display, 32 GB of internal storage and 13MP/5MP cameras. Lenovo are the first global handset manufacturer to use the new MediaTEK MT6595 4G LTE processor. The MT6595 is an octa-core processor made up of 4x ARM Cortex-A17 processors and 4x ARM Cortex-A7 processors. For the GPU MediaTek picked a PowerVR Series6 unit from Imagination Technologies. The rear camera comes with a back-illuminated sensor and LED flash, while the front facing camera features auto-shutter gesture controls that can be configured to take a shot (most likely a “Selfie”) with the blink of an eye or a smile!

Those who want to get the most out of their phones will also enjoy a couple “VIBE Xtension” accessories Lenovo has put together for you. It’s also convenient that these double as cases, removing the need to spend more money on a protective cover for your phone.

The X2 Battery case adds 75% more battery to your device. It’s only 5.1mm thick, making the size transition easy on your hands. The X2 Speaker amplifies the sound while offering a stand and built-in microphone.

Overall the Vibe X2 is about self expression and design. The specs aren’t flagship but they certainly are premium.

Lenovo VIBE Z2

The Lenovo VIBE Z2 is another mid- to premium-range smartphone which Lenovo are touting as the perfect “Selfie” device. The front facing 8MP camera has an anti-distortion lens and the camera app has a set of beautification functions, plus button-free shutter control and an Instant On camera feature that starts the camera app rapidly from the standby screen. The rear camera has a 13MP Sony Exmor BSI sensor along with optical image stabilization.

The VIBE Z2 has a brushed metal unibody design that is just 7.8 mm thick, and an extra-bright, 520nit rating, 5.5-inch (1280 x 720) display. According to Lenovo that makes it one of the brightest screens on the market today.

At the core of the VIBE Z2 is a 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, which makes the VIBE Z2 Lenovo’s first 64-bit powered smartphone. Unlike other manufacturers Lenovo has been vocal about its intention to provide an upgrade to a 64-bit version of Android L. The exact wording of Lenovo’s commitment is, the “VIBE Z2 is Lenovo’s first 64-bit powered smartphone, which means it will be able to take advantage of Google’s future versions of Android that supports high-performance 64-bit computing.”

Along with 32 GB of internal storage, this 4G-LTE device offers dual-SIM support and a hefty 3000 mAh battery for all day battery life.

Price, availability and final thoughts

Both devices carry fair specs and unique features, but is that enough to sway you away from the many other devices at IFA (or elsewhere)? I guess it really depends on the price. It is worth noting that the VIBE X2 and Z3 probably won’t be available globally and are destined for certain targeted markets.

The Lenovo VIBE X2 and VIBE Z2 will cost $399 and $429, respectively. It’s also likely we won’t see these in the USA, but instead they will hit China starting October, followed by Asia Pacific, Eastern Europe and the Middle East.
