SKULLY Taking Pre-orders for Android-based HUD Motorcycle Helmet

If you’ve been itching for a motorcycle helmet with built-in heads-up display, GPD display, and a rearview video camera, today is your lucky day. Skully Systems is not taking pre-orders for their bike helmet over on Indiegogo. This is much more than just a helmet to protect your noggin. The fact that it runs on Android just sweetens the pot.

The AR-1 helmet provides the protection you need when you ride, and adds in some seriously cool features. There’s a GPS display that will give you turn-by-turn directions. The helmet has a full HUD to give you directions, and there will be more functionality added as the Skully Systems team works on the device. The helmet even has a rearview camera built-in, making it easier and safer than ever to see what’s happening behind you when you change lanes or back up. The AR-1 will also hook up to your smartphone so you can make phone calls and access limited phone functions using hands-free voice commands. All of this is DOT/ECE safety certified, so you know it’s designed and implemented in a way that will get you the info you need without putting you in any sort of danger.

The helmet isn’t cheap, though. The $1,299 level is sold out, so current AR-1 pre-orders start at $1,399. That gets you an early adopter price that is $100 less than the normal $1,499 price. Skully will ship you a helmet overseas for $1,599, and there’s a $1,999 limited-edition version that is hand-numbered and signed by the company’s CEO.

This helmet has gotten some big press. Road & Track called it “The most anticipated motorcycle helmet ever produced.” The device has gotten mention in Popular Mechanics and Popular Science magazines, and on CNN. The AR-1 helmet looks wicked awesome, too. It’s great to see a company fund something like this on a user-backed platform like Indiegogo, and then actually follow through and deliver in a timely manner. Whether or not you love Android, you need to check out this helmet if you ride a motorcycle.
