For all those who use Google’s Hangout service it looks like you’re in for a real treat. Google have today announced on their official blog the launch of a brand new Hangouts Chrome App. In short the new Hangouts app allows for the use of Hangouts directly from your desktop. In contrast to the Hangout service which was previously knee-deeply buried in among your Chrome browser and requiring those extra precious few seconds to access, the new app allows for a very quick use and activation of Hangouts. According to Google it has been designed to be “a simpler, faster way to use Hangouts on your computer alongside whatever else you’re doing”.
You can see from the image above that the new design consists of what seems rather similar to Facebook’s ‘Chat Heads’. The app consists of small bubbled circles which contain all relevant information, notifications and contacts. So by simply clicking on a bubble you can start a chat, view previous messages, respond to messages and send images. All-in-all the new app allows for all of the features and services you are used to with Hangouts but extremely conveniently from your desktop. As a result, there is no need know to have Chrome open when using hangouts and once installed the new app simply runs continuously in the background until you sign out.

The promo video is less than a minute but gives you a rather quick and in-depth example of how the app can be used. It’s also worth noting that the bubble heads are not static and can be moved to anywhere on the screen you want. Unfortunately, they can only be moved as a group and it does not seem that you can move the individual bubbles to separate places which would have been a really sweet feature.
