Today, Google added a ton of new items to the Play Store. That included the Nexus Player, Nexus 9, Nexus 6, accessories for the Nexus 9, the Sony Smartwatch 3, a replacement charging cradle for the Samsung Gear Live and a few other goodies. But what we didn’t notice is that Google actually removed the Google Play Edition section. So we no longer have the Google Play Edition HTC One M8, or any of the other Google Play Editions that were available. So let’s take a moment to remember the awesome Google Play Edition devices we’ve had over the past year.
Okay, Google Play Edition isn’t quite over with. But instead of them keeping Nexus separate from Google Play Edition, they’ve merged them together as “Phones and Tablets”. However, all we have is the Moto G and HTC One M8 for Google Play Editions, which means the Sony Xperia Z Ultra Google Play Edition has been retired.
This only solidifies many of our theories about why the Nexus 6 is so expensive. Is that it’s actually Android Silver. All the clues are here. We’ve got a more premium Nexus here that’s being sold on carriers and in retailers. Google Play Edition and Nexus have merged, pretty much, which is what the leaks were telling us. So it’s looking like we may see some more Nexus devices in the next few months. Which wouldn’t surprise me as the Nexus 6 is not a 64-bit device, while Android 5.0 Lollipop is a 64-bit OS. But other than the NVIDIA Tegra K1, there’s no other 64-bit processors available right now. We’re all waiting on the Snapdragon 808 and 810.
How many of you are surprised to see Nexus and Google Play Edition get merged? How many of you actually bought a Google Play Edition device? Be sure to let us know in the comments below.
