Report: A Lot More DDR4 RAM Flagships Will Arrive This Year, The G Flex 2 Is Just The Beginning

Samsung-LPDDR4-RAM1

I believe you all know what RAM (Random-Access Memory) is, it is a crucial component of every single smartphone and tablet to date (as well as every computer out there). Let’s focus on Android devices though, of course. RAM is very important in order for your smartphone to perform smoothly and of course for multitasking purposes. The more RAM you have accessible on your device the less often will the operating system have to shut down apps in order to gain access to some of it. There are, of course, a lot of variables here, like processor also plays a huge part and of course it all depends how heavy is the skin on top of Android. We’re not here to talk about Android skins though, but mobile RAM itself, DDR (Double Data Rate) RAM, to be more exact.

DDR3 RAM has been a standard on smartphones and tablets for quite some time now. If you have a somewhat newer device, the chances are DDR3 RAM is built inside of it. LG has raised an ante quite recently though, when the company announced their G Flex 2 handset at CES (Consumer Electronics Show) in Las Vegas last month. The LG G Flex 2 is the first smartphone which comes with DDR4 RAM on the inside, but we may see others follow this path very soon though. According to Samsung’s Semiconductor chief, the 20nm 8 Gigabit LPDDR4 chip that is paired with the Snapdragon 810 SoC in the G Flex, has double the throughput of DDR RAM. That’s not all though, it has smaller operating voltage and more power efficiency.

Samsung has recently announced that their flagship devices for 2015 will be equipped with the DDR4 RAM, like the Galaxy S6 which will launch on March 1st for example. We’re going to see a lot of devices sporting the DDR4 RAM this year according to the latest reports, and it makes all the sense in the world. These are great news, our devices are getting faster and more efficient, all we need now is a lot better battery life (new battery technology standard) and we’re good to go.
