LG Announces The VR For LG G3 Headset As Their Entry Into Virtual Reality Tech

It seems that Virtual Reality is the hot thing these days, and naturally with Samsung hopping on the bandwagon with the Gear VR headset that works only with the Galaxy Note 4, we couldn’t expect LG, their biggest rivals, to stay too far behind as LG is announcing today their very own virtual reality headset called the VR for LG G3. What’s interesting about this headset is not just that it will most likely be available for quite a bit less than the Gear VR, but it’s modeled after the Google Cardboard design schematics, only it’s made from plastic instead of cardboard.

The VR for LG G3 is also designed to take advantage of the LG G3’s rear placement of the volume rocker and power buttons as well as the rear mounted speaker, but still offers all of the other functionality of Google cardboard like the magnetic ring on the side which helps users scroll through VR apps on the phone. For anyone who has never had the chance to use Google Cardboard, the magnetic ring will work with the gyro sensor inside the LG G3 as a control since you aren’t able to touch the screen of the device. The VR for LG G3 also comes completely assembled, unlike the DIY Cardboard units which you have to put together yourself, and all one needs to do is place the device inside of the headset and begin using VR apps.

As part of the announcement today LG is also giving away free units of the VR for LG G3 to those who buy an LG G3, although there was no mention on where they are rolling out the units, nor how much they’ll cost to anyone who already owns an LG G3 and just wants to buy the VR headset. All we know at this point in time is that the VR for LG G3 promotion begins this month, so likely sometime before Mobile World Congress 2015 begins, which is slated to start on March 1st. Users who get their hands on a VR for LG G3 will also have access to a free game called Robobliteration via a QR code on the inside of the box.
