Samsung Testing New 7-Inch Tablets in India, Could be Galaxy Tab 5

Samsung Logo

Samsung loves its tablets, and for very good reason. Last year we saw continued growth in sales of Samsung tablets and while Samsung’s market share continues to drop out there the number of tablets they’ve shipped as of the last data we’ve seen is still up from the previous quarter, and up from the previous year. Samsung’s strategy of making something for absolutely every person out there no matter what size, shape or functionality you’re looking for seems to be paying off, and it looks like Samsung is getting ready to launch its next generation tablets, likely alongside the Galaxy S6 in the coming months.

At this moment in time it looks like Samsung has officially shipped three new 7-inch tablets to its R&D testing department in India bearing the model number SM-T239. Given the Galaxy Tab 4 7.0 is in the SM-T230 range this makes perfect sense as rumors of Samsung launching three different Galaxy Tab 5 models, with this testing model being the 7-inch variant as the import documents clearly show. Of course in normal tablet fashion there should be two versions of each size here, a WiFi-only and a WiFi and Cellular Radio version, making that total number of new Galaxy Tab 4’s a pretty lofty six SKUs. This information was found on Zauba, which is a website that tracks imported and exported electronics to and from India.

Judging from the packing list here it appears that they’ve shipped three WiFi-only models and three WiFi and Cellular Radio models. Strangely enough one of the WiFi-only models has been separated from the other, although all three WiFi-only models are marked for destruction after the testing phase is complete, whereas the models with a Cellular Radio inside are just marked not for resale. Whether or not we’ll see these tablets at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in a month isn’t clear, but with somewhere around a month’s worth of testing in India until the show begins the possibility is definitely not out of the question. Whether or not Samsung plans to bring the numbered Galaxy Tab series back to a premium line or keep it more of a budget line remains to be seen, as there are no specs in this import listing.
