Karbonn Releases MACHONE, Company’s New Mid-Range Android Smartphone

Karbonn MACHONE

Indian smartphone manufacturer, Karbonn, has just introduced a new device called the MACHONE, which has a model designation of Titanium S310. Of the two, shouting MACHONE is much cooler, right? The device has been released at snapdeal.com where it’s available in black, white and gold colors for the price of 6,990 Indian rupees, just over $110 equivalent. In terms of device specification, the MACHONE sits a little higher in the pecking order compared with the Android One devices and as you can see from the image above, it does not run stock Android. More on the software later, but first let me write about the core handset specification. The MACHONE is based around a 4.7-inch, 720p resolution IPS display and a quad-core 1.3 GHz MediaTek processor, which is backed up by 1GB of RAM. There’s 8GB of internal device storage and a MicroSD slot so that you can add more if you need to. As is typical with many Indian smartphones, the MACHONE is a dual SIM device but as the marketing material does not mention 4G LTE, I must assume that it’s a 3G only device. There’s an 8MP rear camera and a 5MP front camera: both cameras have an LED flash, so you can take those all-important selfies in the dark. One weakness on the hardware front is the battery capacity, which is showing as a disappointing 1,800mAh.

As I’ve already written, the MACHONE doesn’t have the stock software interface. The device uses Android 4.4 KitKat and features a number of changes and enhancements to the software. These include a Smart Eye tracking feature, similar to what Samsung released a couple of years ago. The Smart Eye feature tracks eye movement to pause video playback when you’re not watching the screen. That front-facing camera is paired up with blink detection software, whereby it’ll capture a selfie by blinking your eyes (presumably after you’ve opened them again!). You’ll also be able to double tap the device to wake it and Karbonn have given the device a “Battery Stamina” mode. Depending on how efficient the device is with the small 1,800 energy tank, users may be needing this more often than not.

Whilst the MACHONE introduces nothing radically new to the market, it isn’t designed to. Instead, Karbonn have taken a look at other devices available in the market and cherry picked those features they want customers to benefit from. And for the price, plus that cool name, they may be on to a winner.
