On Tuesday January 6th at CES 2015, MediaTek announced that in a collaborative partnership with Google, they would be using one of their processors to power the world’s first UHD TV that runs on the Android TV platform, which was made a possibility thanks to the integration with the Android TV software that MediaTek was able to develop into their MT5595 SoC. In being the first chip brand to enable an Android TV powered television, MediaTek is not only displaying their commitment to powering forward the living room experience for consumers in an attempt to improve engagement with their TV’s but they’re also expanding upon their chipset portfolio by integrating the Android 5.0 Lollipop software into their technology.
MediaTek states that consumers will be able to expect the Android TV powered UHD TV’s that carry the MT5595 chip inside to reach market for availability by sometime this March, which is only a couple of months away. This means that consumers won’t have to wait long before they’ll be able to experience a high resolution quality screen during any viewing experience as well as see for themselves the kind of performance that MediaTek can bring to the table. This kind of expertise can be attributed to MediaTek’s strong ties in the TV SoC business, where MediaTek is pushing forward with fast paced innovation.
MediaTek’s quad-core MT5595 processor that will be used inside of the UHD TV’s running the Android TV platform as well as other Android TV products. The MT5595 is made up of two high performance ARM Cortex-A7 chips, and is built on the big.LITTLE architecture. MediaTek states that this chip will be the first TV processor that supports the Google VP9 and HVEC codecs as well. Both those codecs are designed for 4K2K content streaming at 60 frames per second so consumers should be able to experience smooth playback on whatever they’re watching or streaming. MediaTek is also working with Google to power the first Google Cast for audio devices which they announced January 5th, further solidifying their strong relationship with Google to bring more innovative and engaging products to market. Along with the Google Cast for audio devices, MediaTek and Google are demonstrating the Android TV products powered by the MT5595 SoC at CES 2015.
