We have written about smartphone breathalyzers before with the BACtrack device that plugs into your smartphones audio port, and now we have another one for you with the FLOOME smartphone breathalyzer that attempts to combine the functionality of a useful and responsible tool with Italian design to give a seemingly simple product a some stylish looks, it even features a removable mouthpiece so it can be easily cleaned before each night out. The FLOOME comes in two different colors, black and red, and takes on a small and rounded design that looks as good as it performs, and for those interested in this device it’s launching today at CES.
While there seems to be a list of features for the FLOOME, one that stood out to us was that it seemingly sports a battery that never needs a charge or replacement, which means so long as you remember to bring it with you when you go out for a few drinks with friends or family, it’ll always be ready to feed you back information on your blood alcohol content. Going out and drinking can be a lot of fun, but it also needs to be responsible and you have to be able to stay in control. FLOOME joins a market that aims to help you do all those things. So how does FLOOME work? It uses a flow meter and fuel cell sensors that can be found in professional breathalyzers to to detect the ethanol molecules, following up by giving you your BAC.
It’s stylish design is touted as also “feeling good to the touch” which we’d attribute to the slightly rounded design, which sounds like it would fit fairly nicely in the contours of your hand. It’s also small and pocket sized of course so you can keep it in your pocket or a bag or purse. Paired with the companion app which will have you enter your characteristics like age, weight, and gender, the FLOOME calculates your BAC which you can see through the app once finished. It also gives you an estimated timeframe of how long you need to wait before your BAC level is low enough and under the legal limit before driving, and it even adds a social aspect by letting you share your BAC level with a selfie photo overlay which can be uploaded to Facebook, Twitter, and other social networks. The FLOOME is scheduled to launch later this year in the U.S. although a price doesn’t seem to have been specified just yet.
