The Asus Zenfone range was released back in January this year and since then, we’ve seen the range extend across the world and to include 4G LTE connectivity. There were three handsets in the range; the Zenfone 4, Zenfone 5 and Zenfone 6, each with progressively better hardware and higher prices. The Zenfone 4 has a 4.0-inch screen of 800 by 480 pixels with a 1.2 GHz Intel Atom processor and a 5 MP rear camera. The Zenfone bumps the screen to a 720p 5.0-inch display with a 2.0 GHz Intel Atom processor and an 8 MP rear camera. The Zenfone 6 has a larger, 6.0-inch screen of the same 720p resolution, uses the same 2.0 GHz processor and has a 13 MP rear camera. Asus have recently updated the Zenfone to Android 4.4 Kit Kat and introduced the Zenfone T45, which has a 4.5-inch 854 by 480 pixel display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 power and a 5 MP rear camera and 4G LTE.
Now, alongside other manufacturers and associated with the Diwali festival in India, which sees a big increase in sales of electronic devices, Asus have announced they are to make 100,000 units available next week to the Indian market via Flipkart. We’ve already seen that Asus are working to increase the number of handsets to sell into the Indian. Demand has been high, according to Asus, but we don’t know the breakdown of numbers between the different models. The Zenfone 4 and 4.5 4G are exclusive to Flipkart whereas the larger Zenfone 5 and 6 handsets are also available from Asus stores.
Regarding the announcement, Peter Chang, Regional Head – South Asia & Country Manager – System Business Group – ASUS India said, “Our experience for the Zenfone Series in India has been tremendous. Zenfones have successfully reached audiences in more than 300 cities all across India. In order to add to the festivity and reciprocate the constant demand received from Indian masses, we have announced the availability of 1 lakh units across variants. Although we believe that 1 lakhs units would not be enough and we are still working towards augmenting the number of units to be available. This is an endeavor to convey our best wishes to all our existing and prospective customers and to reiterate of commitment towards delivering incredible.”
We’ve seen reports that Asus are working on their next generation Zenfone line up and it seems likely that they’ll announce their new range in January, but it doesn’t seem that Asus are trying to clear down stock before the new models. Asus are unable to keep up with demand!
