YouTube to Launch Paid Music Service, Block Music Videos of those Labels that do not Agree to Terms

youtube-ah-1

For about a year now, we’ve been hearing rumors that Google and YouTube were looking to launch a paid music service. Which would be Google’s second streaming music service. After they launched Google Play Music All Access last May at Google I/O in San Francisco. All Access launched at $7.99/month and is now $9.99/month for new users. We’re also hearing that Google may block the music videos of labels who do not agree to Google’s terms for this new paid music service. Which would really suck for those that are independent and trying to get their name out there.

YouTube stated in a statement to Reuters today, that they have partnered with hundreds of major and independent music labels for this new service. Therefore Google has confirmed that they are looking to launch their own music service. Which may be bigger than Google Play Music All Access as a lot more people do use YouTube and it would make more sense to brand it under the YouTube brand than the Google Play Music brand, at least in my opinion it does. According to Reuters, “The news comes as some music trade groups have criticized YouTube’s plans to potentially block the content of certain labels from appearing on YouTube’s free, ad-supported Website unless they sign deals to participate in the new, subscription streaming music service.”

It’s also being reported that YouTube has already signed about 95% of those labels that are already on board with their paid music labels. A person familiar with the situation also stated that blocking those labels that have not agreed might be necessary to provide an equal user experience across both the free and paid versions of YouTube. The service is expected to launch this summer – possible Google I/O launch? – and will allow users to go ahead and listen to music without ads. There is also talk of some offline listening features as well.
