Samsung Gear S Smartwatch Launched In India For INR 28,900 ($470)

Samsung Gear S-40

Samsung announced a bunch of smartwatches thus far. Company’s latest offering were the Android Wear-powered Gear Live and Tizen OS-based Gear S smartwatches. They announced the Gear S ahead of IFA back in August and then showcased it at their IFA event alongside the Galaxy Note 4, Galaxy Note Edge and Gear VR. Samsung Gear S is a smartwatch which comes with a curved screen and lets you insert a SIM card in there and use it as a phone if so you choose. The watch itself is rather big, curve does help with the high a bit, though it’s still quite huge.

This Korean giant has just launched this smartwatch in India for INR 28,900. It comes in Blue Black and White colors and will be available starting October 17, just like the Galaxy Note 4. This smartwatch is sporting a 2-inch 360 x 480 Super AMOLED display along with 512MB of RAM and 4GB of internal storage. The watch is powered by an undisclosed dual-core processor clocked at 1GHz and it comes with Tizen OS pre-installed. The device sports 2G and 3G capability after you insert a SIM card in there and it also comes with Bluetooth 4.1. This watch is IP67 certified for water and dust resistance while it also supports Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n connectivity. Heart rate sensor, accelerometer, gyroscope, compass, ambient light sensor and barometer are also a part of the package while the device ships with a 300mAh battery. GPS is also included.

Does someone out there actually likes the Gear S? It sure is a rather odd product, but that’s Samsung for you. I personally think this smartwatch is too big and don’t exactly see the point of having a SIM card in there, especially considering that might kill the 300mAh battery on the thing, though that remains to be seen I guess. Do you own a smartwatch or would you consider buying one, if yes, which one? One of the already available Android Wear smartwatches or perhaps one of Samsung’s Tizen offerings… Pebble is also an option. I will be getting the G Watch or Gear Live soon for personal use, though Moto 360 is the best designed smartwatch offering thus far, in my humble opinion.
