What is Camera51?
Camera51 is, as the name implies, a camera app. It attempts to help you capture more full, enjoyable photos by giving you tips on where to re-position your camera to get an optimal shot. It’s totally free in the Google Play Store with no in app purchases.
Here’s how it works. When you open the app you’ll see your usual camera viewfinder. Inside of the viewfinder you’ll see a white box pop up and you’ll also see the center of your current shot which is shown as a phone icon. The idea is that you’re supposed to move the middle of the shot to the white box and that is supposed to get you the best available shot. In other words, Camera51 tells you where to aim your camera.
There are a few features to help make the feature work better. You can select multiple objects so the camera doesn’t inadvertently direct you away from something that’s supposed to be in the shot. You can also select the subject of your shots manually in case Camera51 doesn’t get it right. Otherwise, you pretty much just point and the app tells you where you’re supposed to be pointing. It’s one of the most polite ways I’ve ever seen an application tell me that I’m doing it wrong.
What’s interesting is that because of the algorithms the app uses to identify objects and optimize shots, it’s actually pretty hard on your CPU and that means it can be pretty hard on your battery life if you use it frequently so beware of that. If you have an older device, Camera51 may not work so well. It worked fine on the Nexus 5 and the Note 3 so this year’s and last year’s flagships should perform admirably. It’s not necessarily a bad thing but it is something to keep in mind.
Not your average camera app.

- Very simple to use.
- Not for professional photographers. This is definitely slanted toward those who are not photography savvy.
- High CPU use can cause potentially high battery drain. It also means it doesn't work on older (or lower end) devices as well.
- Has the occasional crash here and there along with other minor bugs.
Overall, Camera51 does pretty much what it says it does. Whether or not the shots are truly optimized depends on your opinion on what an optimized shot is supposed to look like. That said, amateurs and people who aren’t savvy with cameras could find this application very useful. It’s free to use with no in app purchases so it’s not like it’ll cost you anything to try it out.
