There was some talk yesterday that Xiaomi will launch a 999 Yuan smartphone in order to compete with Meizu’s MX4 offering. Xiaomi probably feels a bit threatened by Meizu’s offering considering MX4 is selling like crazy, not only in China but abroad as well. This is the result of Meizu’s strategy to offer the device starting from $449 (16GB version) abroad with tax and shipping taken care of, so you basically can get the company’s smartphone for $449 unlocked. Meizu even said they will have problems producing so many models in time and has promised compensation in form of coupons for their Flyme store in order to apologize for any delays tha might occur.
Xiaomi’s co-founder, Liwan Jiang, confirmed via his official Weibo (Chinese social network) account that the company will release a smartphone priced at 1,499 Yuan which is about $244. This way the smartphone would be cheaper than the Meizu’s offering. As stated yesterday this device should be a part of Xiaomi’s Redmi series which is selling like hotcakes lately. Xiaomi, of course, didn’t mention anything about Meizu or will this be the direct competitor to that device, but I guess that much is implied. This device is expected to carry MediaTek’s MT6595 octa-core processor inside, which is the very same SoC Meizu has used in their MX4 smartphone.
Xiaomi and Meizu amongst the top Chinese manufacturers these days, if not the top two. They make really great devices and make them really affordable. Both companies are doing their best in order to offer their products all around the world, Xiaomi is even making a strong push not only to ship from China but to open their business elsewhere. Xiaomi has already started doing business in Italy it seems and Brazil is the next step, they’re close to starting things up there as well. A bunch of companies will follow.
