It seems as though both Apple and Samsung are at a war to figure out who can jam as much junk into their smartwatches. After the Apple Watch was announced with a slew of features, including paying for purchases at retailers (a useful one), Samsung is looking to one-up their favorite fruit company.
Apparently they are working on implementing a fingerprint scanner for what could be their next smartwatch. They are also working with PayPal for a new payment solution. In fact, users might even be able to purchase things before entering the store.
Seriously? Why do we need a fingerprint scanner on a watch? Why not just make it so that if the watch is connected to the phone, then allow all purchases? The same goes for the phone. As long as both are connected to each other there is no need for security to be in place. So if someone were to steal your watch or you leave it at the gym, nobody would be able to make a payment since it wouldn’t be connected to your phone anymore. A smartwatch is supposed to be quick and convenient. If I have to fumble around with it, I might as well pull out the damn phone.
Google is already implementing something like this in Android L. Motorola already uses Trusted Devices in the Moto X, and there are a few apps that do the same thing. Hopefully Samsung isn’t able to sneak this onto Android Wear devices, and instead, reserve this feature for their Tizen devices.
