T-Mobile Has a New Coverage Map, it Updates Every Two Weeks

Screenshot 2015-03-30 09.17.52

The biggest complaint we hear about T-Mobile is their coverage. They have been working to change that, but many people still doubt that it has changed. And their coverage map is probably a big part of that, as it doesn’t get updated often. However, today, the company rolled out a new “next-gen” coverage map, onto their website. At first glance, you probably won’t notice much of a difference, but there actually is. The map now update every two weeks, and it pulls in data from third party sources like Speedtest.net. Which means when you are running those speedtests on your device, T-Mobile is using that data on their maps.

As you’ll see on the map, some places have speedtests, while others don’t. If you look at Manhatten, you’ll find that part of Manhattan has 30+ mbps speeds on T-Mobile, while others are around 7-10mbps. Both are actually quite good for being in NYC. However, it does mean that you can know what to expect if you’re traveling to New York City. It appears that T-Mobile only includes speedtest results when there’s a big pool of them. In smaller cities, these speed test results are not shown.

In addition to speeds, T-Mobile also shows you what kind of signal to expect inside of buildings. As T-Mobile’s network has been notoriously terrible inside. However that should change a bit when the 700MHz spectrum rolls out. The coverage map also shows you where HD Voice is located, as some places don’t have it, while most places do.

It is great to see T-Mobile changing up their coverage map this way and pulling in data from customers speed test results. That makes it a pretty big deal, as T-Mobile can rely on these third-party speed testing apps to see how great or not so great their coverage and network are in certain areas. And where it’s Customer Verified, customers will be a bit more willing to trust their coverage map. However, you can still use Sensorly’s map. Their map is really great and supports just about every carrier around the world, for unbiased coverage maps.
