Additional Qualcomm Snapdragon 815 SoC Details Surface

Qualcomm is still the most popular manufacturer of mobile chips in the world. The company’s Snapdragon chips have been powering smartphones for years, and have been doing a great job doing that. Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 810 64-bit octa-core SoC did get some bad press ever since it was launched, some reports have been suggesting that it’s overheating. The company has decided to heat-test the upcoming Snapdragon 815 recently, and has also compared that SoC with the already released Snapdragon 801 and 810 models in order to prove how much cooler the 815 really is. They actually did the same thing when it comes to the company’s mid-range offerings, the Snapdragon 615 and 620.

That being said, some new details arrived regarding Qualcomm’s yet-unreleased Snapdragon 815 SoC. According to the sources, the chip will feature four Cortex A72 cores and four Cortex A53 cores (FinFet manufacturing process). We’re looking at yet another SoC which will use the big.LITTLE architecture in which only 1 quad-core set will run at a time. Four Cortex A72 cores will take care of the heavy lifting, and Cortex A53 cores will keep the device going when it doesn’t require a lot of processing power. The Adreno 450 GPU will ship with this SoC, and will be in charge of graphics. This processor will also include LDDR4 RAM and will use the MDM9X55 LTE-A (Cat.10) modem, according to previous information.

We still don’t know when does the company intends to release the Snapdragon 815, but reports have been saying that it might happen in Q3 or Q4 this year. The Snapdragon 810 is currently powering a couple of flagships like the LG G Flex 2 and HTC One M9, and the LG G4, Sony Xperia Z4 and Xiaomi Mi Note Pro will also be powered by this processor. Qualcomm is facing some serious competition from MediaTek and Samsung in the processor department, but neither of those companies can compare to Qualcomm at this moment (as far as market share goes). It will be interesting to see if those two companies will manage to steal some market share away from Qualcomm by the end of 2015.
