Sony’s Mysterious Xperia 5.2″ Handset Pops Up On GFXBench And Geekbench With Lollipop On Board

Sony had some issues turning profit from their smartphone business last year, and had to cut costs in order to carry on. The company has decided to focus on the high-end device line, leave Chinese market and also cut back on the number of smartphone sub-brands they manufacture. This doesn’t mean they won’t be manufacturing low and mid-range smartphones, of course, only that they’ll manufacture less of those. Anyhow, a new Sony Xperia-branded device surfaced on GFXBench and Geekbench, and now, it’s not the Xperia Z4.

This Japan-based manufacturer is expected to launch the Xperia Z4 soon, if they intend to stick to their 2 flagships per year release schedule, of course. The Xperia Z2 launched in February 2014, while the Xperia Z3 was announced in September last year. We still don’t know if the company intends to launch the Z4 anytime soon, but let’s not worry about right now, let’s focus on the device at hand. The device that got benchmarked is definitely not a high-end offering by Sony, this is a mid-range device through and through.

According to the listing, this handset carries the model number E2303 and features a 5.2-inch 1280 x 720 display along with 2GB of RAM and 4GB of internal storage (which will hopefully be expandable). This handset will be powered by Qualcomm’s 64-bit Snapdragon 615 octa-core processor which ships with an Adreno 405 GPU for graphics. 12-megapixel camera is listed as its main camera, though this will quite probably be a 13-megapixel snapper, while a 5-megapixel shooter will be available up front. Android 5.0 Lollipop will come pre-installed on this device according to both listings.

As already mentioned, this is definitely not the Xperia Z4, its specifications are mid-range. This could, however, be the successor to the Xperia C3 which was launched last year. The Xperia Z4 won’t be showcased at this year’s MWC (Mobile World Congress) in Barcelona, which leaves room for some other Sony-branded devices, could this be one of them?
