Google Will Be Ending The Google Glass Explorer Program On January 19th

AH Google Glass

Google’s Glass Explorers program began two and a half years ago(technically)when they introduced the wearable glasses at Google I/O back in June of 2012. It has been a long run with the augmented reality specs and what a ride it has been to see and share all the different experiences people have captured with Google Glass. Earlier this morning we learned that Nest’s Tony Fadell would be handed the reigns to oversee the Google Glass project going forward, and alongside that news it was stated that the Google Glass Explorers program would finally be coming to and end. That doesn’t necessarily mean that a consumer ready version of Google Glass is just around the corner, but with the explorer program ending it certainly marks a milestone in the Google Glass adventure. Now Google can move forward with the device as it seems they’re finally ready to start towards a consumer product.

So when is the program actually ending? Google has been sending out emails to those that have been some of the most active participants in the Explorer program, stating that the Explorer program would be ending on January 19th, just a mere four days away from now. Google states that in light of the Glass Explorer program ending on January 19th, that means all new feature development for the Explorer edition of Google Glass will stop while the team works on the next version of Glass.

They didn’t specify whether or not Glass Explorer editions will ever get new feature development again, so perhaps that means Glass Explorers could receive new features down the road when Google finally has a finished product to bring to market. Perhaps they’ll never update the Glass Explorer edition again and they’ll replace the units with the next version when they launch. Who knows. It’s all very exciting though especially if you have had any interest in Google Glass from the beginning. We can’t wait to see what Google has planned for the future of Glass, as it seems to be in good hands and we’re confident they have some interesting plans for the next version. This might leave plenty of questions for people who are Glass Explorers or for anyone who was just a general Google Glass enthusiast, like whether or not Google will be changing up the design for the next model. Will they slim things down? keep the design the same? Will it have more capabilities? All questions will surely be answered in due time.

Thanks Keith Meyers for the tip!!
