Google Maps Updated To Allow Sharing Of Turn By Turn Directions

AH Google Maps 1.3

Typically every week Google does its whole update thing and a number of Google Services and products receive updates. Sometimes they are minor updates with little tweaks and sometimes the updates are much more substantial. This week we have already seen an update to Google Drive and the way it handles files being uploaded. We also saw Chromebooks get an update to the way in which they connect with PC’s and laptops through the Chrome Remote Desktop App. Following on from these, there is an update to Google Maps which is rolling out.

This update is not huge and instead is a bit of a minor one. In fact, some might even think the update is rather pointless. That said, as with all things, they do have a purpose and especially for certain people. The update rolling out to Maps brings with it the ability to send someone detailed (point by point) directions to somewhere or from somewhere. It sounds more confusing than it really is. In short, if you want to share directions with someone, you now can. As mentioned, some will see this as a rather pointless exercise as it is probably easier to share your location (or just text someone the address) and let them use their Maps to detail the directions. However, if you prefer you can share the actual turn by turn directions. Maybe a more beneficial use of this update will be that you can share the information with yourself. Once the points have been plotted and directions contained you could simply share it to your Drive, Gmail or whatever for later use.

Anyway, if you want to use the new feature then the procedure it pretty much the same as it was before. Open Maps, enter your start location, destination location, filter by the method of transport and wait for the directions. Once plotted, hit the top right corner menu and you will see the new ‘Share directions’ tab. If you don’t see it just yet, then don’t worry. As always, these things are slow at rolling out but they will land soon enough. So, what do you think of the new feature? Do you see a reason you might be using it? Prefer to just send people an address and let them do their own legwork? Let us know
