Banana Rocks – Indie app of the day

Banana Rocks review

What is Banana Rocks

Banana Rocks is an infinite runner style game where you play as a banana that can also play guitar. The premise is goofy and it’s perfect for kids because it no real violence. It’s free to play with ads and you can purchase the premium version for $0.99US as an in app purchase.

If you’ve played an infinite runner then you understand the basic concepts of this game. It is a 2D, side-scrolling game so the only two things you need to worry about are jumping and sliding. You can also double jump to get over obstacles or read music notes. The obstacles are generally random implements of destruction and usually they’re pretty easy to dodge. A few, like the bear trap, will jump at you and those little surprises help make the game challenging.

Those who collect enough music notes will be given Banana Rocks mode where the banana plays a guitar. While you’re in this mode you are totally invincible against all bad guys. You can collect more music notes to lengthen the mode. You can obtain the mode repeatedly during a single play-through as long as you collect enough music notes. There are also Google Play Games leader boards if you want to keep score against your friends.

PROS

  • Simple, infinite runner-style game is simple to pick up and play for people of almost any age.

  • Free to play with a single in app purchase (that removes ads).

  • Google Play Games leaderboards let you compare with friends.

  • Banana Rock mode is admittedly quite awesome.

CONS

  • It's a very simple game and we can't imagine anyone other than kids (or adults wanting to waste a minute or two) truly enjoying this.

  • Very shallow game. Could have used more obstacles, power ups, and level selections.

6.5

Overall, this is a great game for kids. The cartoon-style graphics and the absurd premise of a banana playing a guitar is entertaining enough and the simple game play is great for little fingers. Also, there is only one in app purchase so if your kid does go nuts with your credit card, you waste $1 and there will be no more ads. It’s also pretty fun and somewhat challenging for adults as long as you don’t mind having a guitar-playing banana on your screen where people can see it. It’s worth a shot!
