We saw a pretty interesting report come out of The Economic Times of India today. It’s one that’s hard to believe. But basically after Google was turned down for buying Whatsapp – and Facebook snuck in and grabbed them – Google has decided to create their own Whatsapp competitor. But wait a minute. What about Hangouts?
The big deal here is that people won’t need a Google account to use this service. Which means it should work on forked versions of Android like the Kindle Fire tablets. But more importantly, it’ll be available in emerging markets that don’t have access to Google. We’ll likely see this messaging service have a smaller app size too. While Hangouts is only about 30 megs or so – at least on the Galaxy Alpha it is – that’s still pretty large for phones in emerging markets. For instance the Android One devices only have about 4GB of space, and a lot of that is taken up by the OS.
The first market to see this new service is said to be India. Which isn’t a huge surprise as that’s where Android One started. The Times of India seems to think that it’ll launch in the very near future. Which is quite possible, and we’ll have to keep our eyes out to see what does happen here, as this is getting a bit more interesting. With both Google and Motorola focusing more on India.
So Hangouts was made to combine all of Google’s messaging services. Now they are creating another one, basically to rival Hangouts, and one that doesn’t need a Google account. I’m a bit confused here. But I’m sure Google knows what they are doing here. What does everyone think about this report? Think it’s true? Or just another baseless rumor?
